Selling a wrecked or damaged Kia EV9

Ten recall campaigns in three model years. That's the EV9's record with NHTSA so far, though most of them are small: four cover 342 vehicles or fewer, and two cover just 8. The 2024, the first year, also holds 208 of the 255 owner complaints on file, and 93 of those name the electrical system.

If your EV9 has been in a crash, has a drive unit or battery problem, or is simply more trouble than you want to fix, you can sell the whole car as it sits. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US.

What the EV9 is

A three-row electric SUV. It rides on E-GMP, Hyundai-Kia's electric platform, which the Kia EV6 and Hyundai's Ioniq 5 also use. Wikipedia lists a 76.1 kWh standard battery and rear- or all-wheel drive. It's built in Gwangmyeong, South Korea, and since May 2024 also at Kia's plant in West Point, Georgia, the first Kia electric vehicle assembled in the US. The EPA lists Standard Range, Long Range, GT-Line and GT versions.

This page goes by model year.

The 2024: most complaints, most recalls

The first model year has 208 complaints as of October 10, 2026, led by electrical system (93), then suspension (16). Seven recall campaigns list the 2024:

  • 24V962 (2024-2025): second- and third-row seat mounting bolts may be missing. 22,883 vehicles.
  • 24V757 (2024-2025): a software error may make the instrument panel screen fail. 14,163 vehicles.
  • 24V693: the remote smart parking assist, which moves the car while you stand outside it, may misjudge stopping distance. 12,400 vehicles.
  • 24V400: the headliner may not protect occupants well enough in a crash. 2,401 vehicles.
  • 24V338: front passenger seat belt retractor cover may not be secured. 4 vehicles.
  • 24V271: differential gear bolts may not be tightened properly, risking loss of drive power. Its 8 vehicles include 2023 Niro EVs.
  • 26V431: high voltage cells whose electrodes may sit out of alignment, a fire risk. Its 8 vehicles include 2022-2024 EV6s. Keep it outdoors, away from structures, and cap charging at 80% until it's fixed.

Wikipedia adds that the 2024 earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick only for cars built after January 2024, once Kia adjusted the headlights on the Land and GT-Line trims to cut glare.

The 2025 and 2026

The 2025 has 21 complaints, spread thin: visibility and wipers, wheels and seats, 3 each. Its own recall is 25V115, 342 vehicles whose rear drive unit motor shaft may have been welded improperly and can fail, cutting drive power. Recall 26V545 covers 21,290 2025-2026 EV9s whose occupant detection mat may not switch off the passenger air bag for a child or child seat.

The 2026 has 26 complaints, again led by electrical (10). It shares recall 26V046, instrument panel software, with the K4, Sorento, Sportage, K5 and Carnival; that 42,677 total spans all six nameplates.

Both are younger than the 2024, so fewer months of ownership sit behind those numbers.

Tallies from NHTSA's complaint download of October 10, 2026; the unknown-or-other code is set aside. Two recalls span 2024 and 2025, and one spans 2025 and 2026, which is why the column adds to more than 10.

Fix it or sell it?

An EV9 is new enough that the first stop is a dealer, not a buyer.

  1. Run the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup. NHTSA lists each fix above as free, apart from 26V431, whose notice ends before stating a cost.
  2. Lost drive power? Ask about 24V271 (2024) or 25V115 (2025) first.
  3. Battery fault or a fire warning? Check 26V431, and see EV battery failed if the pack itself is the issue.
  4. Crash damage? If an insurer is involved, read insurer totaled it before you accept anything, then wrecked or totaled for selling it as-is.

Selling the EV9 whole

  1. Note the VIN, the mileage and the version, such as Long Range AWD.
  2. Ask for an offer online or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Say whether it powers on, whether it will shift into Neutral, and where it's parked. If the battery recall is open, keep it outside.
  4. Leave the battery and every other part in place. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
  5. Still financed or leased? See still owe on the loan or leased car.

Questions people ask

Which EV9 recalls can cause a loss of drive power?
Two. Recall 24V271 covers differential gear bolts on a handful of 2024 EV9s that may not be tightened properly. Recall 25V115 covers 342 2025 EV9s whose rear drive unit motor shaft may have been welded improperly. Dealers replace the drive unit in both, free of charge.
What is the EV9 battery recall?
Recall 26V431 covers certain 2024 EV9s and 2022-2024 EV6s with battery cells that may have been built with electrodes out of line, a flaw Kia says can cause a fire while parked or driving. Until the repair, keep the car outdoors and stop charging at 80%.
Will you buy an EV9 after a crash?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, including electric ones, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Tell us what's damaged and whether any warning lights or battery alerts are showing.
