Selling a dead or junk Kia Forte

After the engine, air bags are what Forte owners complain to NHTSA about most: 283 complaints, ahead of the electrical system (207). The 2010-2013 cars filed 130 of them, and those years also have recall 18V363: on 2010-2013 Fortes, the air bag control unit may short circuit in a crash.

Forte problems by generation

Owner complaints on record at NHTSA on October 10, 2026, give these numbers. A 2022 Forte has been driven far fewer years than a 2012, so it has had fewer chances to gather them. Recall vehicle totals cover each campaign in full, and several of these campaigns include other Kias. Wikipedia gives production years for each generation; the model-year groups below are our match to them.

2010-2013: the first Forte

The Forte replaced the Spectra, and the 2010 earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick. Wikipedia lists 1.6, 2.0 and 2.4 four-cylinders. From 2011 a 6-speed manual was standard and a 6-speed automatic optional, replacing the 4- and 5-speed automatics. These four years have 910 complaints. Air bags are named 41, 35, 36 and 18 times, and the engine jumps on the 2012 (150) and 2013 (108).

Recalls on these cars:

  • 18V363: the 2010-2013 Forte and Forte Koup's air bag control unit can short during a crash. 507,587 vehicles, with the Optima and Sedona.
  • 20V750: 2012-2015 Forte and Forte Koup cars can catch fire under the hood while moving, in a 294,756-vehicle campaign shared with the Sorento, Optima Hybrid, Soul and Sportage.
  • 17V773: a worn brake pedal stopper pad can leave the brake lights on, on 2012-2014 Forte and Koup cars.
  • 16V070: an automatic transmission cooler hose may have been installed wrong on 10,240 2011 Fortes.

2014-2018: the busiest years

The second generation was built in South Korea and at Pesquería, Mexico, with 1.6 engines including a turbo. Gearboxes included a 7-speed dual-clutch. The Koup ended after 2016 and the Forte5 hatchback after 2018. These years have 1,284 complaints. The 2014 tops every Forte year at 445: engine 191, air bags 60, steering 47. The 2017 has 305 complaints and 4 reported deaths.

Recall 15V015 covers 86,880 2014 Fortes whose cooling fan resistor may overheat and melt. Recall 21V260 covers 4,069 2017-2018 Fortes with the 2.0 Nu engine, where particles stuck in the oil pump can cause pump failure and engine damage. Recall 22V031 covers the air bag control unit cover on 2017-2018 models, and 21V622 a trunk latch that may stop opening from inside.

2019-2024: the last Forte

The third generation offered a 1.4 turbo, a 1.5 Smartstream and a 1.6, with 6- or 7-speed dual-clutch gearboxes on some. Production ended in 2024, and the K4 took its place. These six years have 411 complaints, led by power train on the 2019 (43). The 2019 also has small recalls for LED headlight aim (18V771) and a left front axle that may not have been heat-treated (20V459).

The 2023 has three steering and suspension recalls. 22V906 covers a front left steering knuckle that may crack. 23V649 and 24V244 cover poor welds on the right front lower control arm. Both carry a do not drive warning, and dealers replace the arm.

Fix the Forte or sell it?

  1. Do-not-drive recall on a 2023? Park it and run the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup. The fix is free; broken suspension covers what to do if it is already damaged.
  2. Engine trouble on a 2017-2018 2.0? Ask a Kia dealer whether recall 21V260 was done. Its listed remedy is a free oil pan replacement, not a new engine, but the dealer record is worth having before you sell.
  3. Air bags went off? That usually decides it. See airbags deployed.
  4. Otherwise, compare the written repair quote with the value of a running Forte of the same year. Blown engine explains how to weigh an engine job.

Selling your Forte whole

  1. Say which body you have: sedan, Forte5 hatchback or two-door Koup.
  2. Tell us if it can't be driven because of an open do-not-drive recall or a broken arm, so the driver brings the right equipment to load it.
  3. Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
  4. Leave it as it is. Keep the catalytic converter and wheels on the car; mention anything that's already gone.
  5. When the driver shows up for the Forte, hand over the keys and title and have your ID ready. After you sell lists each state's plate rules.

Other Kia sedans: the Optima, K4 and Spectra, or every Kia.

Questions people ask

Which Forte model years have the most NHTSA complaints?
The 2014 has 445 owner complaints in NHTSA's file (October 10, 2026), the most of any Forte. Next are the 2012 (306) and 2017 (305). Late-model Fortes have fewer years behind them, which keeps their counts low for now.
My 2023 Forte has a do-not-drive recall. What should I do?
Don't drive it. Recalls 23V649 and 24V244 cover certain 2023 Fortes where a bad weld on the right front lower control arm can make it fail. A dealer will fit a new arm for free. Check your VIN on nhtsa.gov/recalls. If you decide to sell instead, a car that can't be driven can still be loaded and picked up.
Which Fortes are in the air bag control unit recall?
Recall 18V363 covers 2010-2013 Forte and Forte Koup cars, along with some Optimas and Sedonas, because the unit that controls the air bags could short circuit in a collision. The campaign counts 507,587 vehicles across those models.
Do you buy a Forte with a blown engine?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US. You sell the whole car as it sits.
