Selling a worn-out Kia Spectra

Two generations, one main complaint

Wikipedia says Kia built the Spectra from 2000 to 2009. It took many parts from the Sephia and was replaced by the Forte. NHTSA's file covers the 2002 to 2009 model years.

First generation, 2002-2004 model years

Wikipedia describes the first Spectra as a front-engine, front-wheel-drive car built for affordability. These three years hold 253 complaints. Air bags lead on the 2002 and 2004 (20 each); on the 2003 the hydraulic brakes lead (12). The power train shows up in the top three every year.

Second generation, 2005-2009 model years

The second Spectra, introduced in 2005, got new styling and more power, per Wikipedia. Across the whole 2002-2009 run, the EPA lists 1.8-liter and 2.0-liter versions. These five years hold 634 complaints, and air bags lead every one of them, 289 complaints in all. The 2007 has the most complaints of any Spectra year, 162, with fuel system complaints second (15).

The two recalls

• Steering tie rods, 05V183 (2005). The tie rods may have a metallurgy flaw from manufacturing. Dealers replace the steering rack, tie rods included. Only 368 vehicles.
• Fuel tank straps, 11V256 (2004-2007). This covers Spectra LD cars built from November 7, 2003 through March 6, 2007 whose first sale or current registration falls in Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine or another state on Kia's list. Dealers replace the tank straps and hardware with zinc-coated parts. 58,322 vehicles.

Complaints and recalls by model year

Spectra counts here were taken from NHTSA's owner-complaint records on October 10, 2026. The tank strap recall sits on all four of its rows, 2004 to 2007.

Across all years the file holds 171 complaints that report a crash, 144 that report an injury and 6 that report a death.

Fix or sell?

The youngest Spectra is now well past 15 years old. If an air bag light is on or the bags have gone off, see airbags deployed before you spend on it. For a car that simply won't start, see car doesn't run. When fixing a Spectra would cost about what a healthy one brings, selling yours unrepaired is the cleaner choice. Run the VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup either way.

Selling the Spectra whole

1. Pull the Spectra's VIN off the title or dash, plus the mileage and the reason it stopped.
2. Get an offer online or call (877) 421-6008.
3. Give the address and say whether the Spectra will roll on its own tires. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
4. Leave it whole, and flag anything a previous owner already pulled.
5. The title, signed, plus a photo ID, goes to the driver at the curb. No title? Start with selling with no title.
