Selling a junk or non-running Kia Sedona

Electrical faults, not the engine, top the Kia Sedona's NHTSA complaints. Owners have named the electrical system 347 times and the engine 308 times. The Sedona's recall list tells a matching story: wiring, sensors, software and rust come up far more often than engine parts.

Sedona problems by model year group

We have no generation history for the Sedona, so this page groups its EPA years (2002-2021) by the recalls that cluster in them. These Sedona counts reflect owner reports NHTSA had received up to October 10, 2026. A 2020 van has been around a lot less time than a 2006 to build up a count. A recall's vehicle total is the campaign's, and when the campaign names other models, we say so.

2002-2005: throttle cables and wheel bearings

These four years hold 843 complaints. The electrical system leads the 2002 (49) and 2003 (32), wheels lead the 2004 (34), and hydraulic brakes lead the 2005 (62).

Two recalls hit the throttle cable. 05V013 replaced cables on 2002-2003 Sedonas that could twist out of position during assembly. 05V329 covers 2003-2005 vans where water on the cable can freeze and resist the pedal returning. 05V232 replaced rear hub caps on 2003-2005 vans with alloy wheels, because trapped moisture can damage the outer wheel bearing. 03V017 replaced second- and third-row belt buckle anchor bolts on 21,248 2002 Sedonas.

2006-2012: rust under the front end

The busiest stretch, with 965 complaints. The 2006 alone has 385, led by air bags (73) and suspension (66).

Two corrosion recalls also cover the front suspension. 13V550 and 16V387 cover 2006-2012 Sedonas sold or registered in listed states, where the front lower control arms can corrode; dealers rustproof or replace them. 16V389 covers a secondary hood latch that can bind on 2006-2014 vans. 20V088 covers moisture shorting the anti-lock brake module on 2006-2010 Sedonas, a campaign of 228,829 that also includes 2007-2009 Sorentos. 20V101 replaced fuel rails that can crack from engine heat and leak on 51,465 2011-2012 Sedonas.

2014-2021: engine complaints and sliding doors

NHTSA's file has no 2013 Sedona. The 2014-2021 vans total 723 complaints, and the 2016 is the peak, with 296, 141 of them naming the engine. The 2015 (45) and 2017 (56) add more engine complaints.

The recalls on these years are about other things: 18V338 reprograms power sliding doors that may not reverse when blocked (106,428 vans, 2015-2018); 19V109 fixes passenger-seat occupant detection wiring; 21V725 updates turn signal software; and 22V612 covers a shift lever that may not lock on 2016 Sedonas and Sorentos. Six more Sedona campaigns were not in our summary, so run your VIN.

Multi-year campaigns are listed under each Sedona year they reach.

Repair the Sedona or sell it?

  1. Clunk or pull from the front on a 2006-2012? Check 13V550 and 16V387 at NHTSA's recall lookup. If rust goes past the arms, failed inspection or rust covers the options.
  2. Fuel smell on a 2011-2012? Ask a Kia dealer about 20V101.
  3. Engine trouble on a 2015-2017? No recall in our list covers it. Ask a shop for a quote in writing, then hold it up against the value of a Sedona that runs. Blown engine helps with that math.

Selling a Sedona whole

  1. Tell us what works: sliding doors, the hood latch, and whether it rolls and steers.
  2. Mention rusted or broken front arms. A van that can't steer can still be loaded; the driver just needs to know.
  3. Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008. Let us know if it sits in a driveway, at the curb or in a parking lot.
  4. Leave it complete, with its seats and catalytic converter. If anything is gone, say so.
  5. Sedona loading day: hand the driver the title, and he will check your photo ID. Plates and insurance: after you sell.

Other Kias with room: the Carnival, Sorento and Telluride, or every Kia.

Questions people ask

Which Sedona model years have the most NHTSA complaints?
The 2006 Sedona leads with 385 owner complaints at NHTSA, counted October 10, 2026. The 2016 follows at 296, and the 2002 at 248. The last Sedonas, 2019-2021, are younger and have had fewer years to draw any.
Is my Sedona in the front control arm corrosion recall?
Two recalls, 13V550 and 16V387, cover 2006-2012 Sedonas built June 15, 2005 to August 14, 2012 and sold or registered in listed states, including Massachusetts, Maryland and Michigan in the first and Alaska, Connecticut and Delaware in the second. Dealers inspect the front lower control arms and rustproof or replace them. For a sure answer, run the VIN on nhtsa.gov/recalls.
Will you take a Sedona that won't roll?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Tell us if a wheel is locked or a front arm is broken so the truck comes ready to drag or lift it.
