Sell a broken or junk Kia Carnival minivan
The 2025 Carnival has the most complaints. The 2025 model year holds 192 of the 502 owner complaints NHTSA had on file for the Carnival as of October 10, 2026, and 91 of those name the electrical system. That runs against the usual pattern, where older cars lead simply because they've been on the road longer.

Sedona first, Carnival since 2022
For years Kia sold this van in the US as the Sedona. EPA data lists the Sedona through 2021 and the Carnival from 2022. Every US Carnival so far is the fourth generation, which Wikipedia says has been built since 2020 at Kia's Sohari Plant in Gwangmyeong, on the Hyundai-Kia N3 platform; Wikipedia lists the Sorento as a related model. Engines listed for it are a 2.0-liter turbo four and 3.5-liter V6s. The EPA also lists a Carnival Hybrid.
Known problems, 2022-2024: doors, fuel and trim
Sliding doors. The 2022 has 136 complaints, and its top component is structure (31). NHTSA files the sliding door recall under structure too. Recall 23V236 covers all 2022 and certain 2023 Carnivals, 51,568 vans, where the power sliding doors' auto-reverse may not kick in every time. The fix is a free control module software update. An earlier recall, 21V908, replaced parts in the passenger-side door's remote controller on 2,956 2022 vans whose door might not latch securely. The 2022 also lists 34 people injured, the most of any Carnival year.
Fuel. Two recalls, years apart. Recall 21V277 checked 2,744 2022 Carnivals for a damaged plastic fuel rail tube. Recall 26V232, reported in April 2026, is much bigger: 141,032 2022-2026 Carnivals where fuel may leak at the joint between the fuel pipe and fuel rail. Owner letters went out June 2, 2026.
Towing harness. Recall 23V179 covers 3,555 2022-2023 vans with a factory or dealer tow hitch harness that can collect water. Kia advised keeping those vans parked outdoors, clear of structures, pending the fix.
Roof molding. Recall 24V025 secures or replaces roof molding that can loosen and come off. Its 101,049 vehicles include 2023-2024 Sportages, so that count is not the Carnival's alone.
Known problems, 2025-2026: electrical complaints
Wikipedia says 2025 models got added reinforcement in the B-pillars, front and rear doors and rear seat rails. Since then the complaint mix has moved. On the 2025, electrical system leads with 91 complaints, then vehicle speed control with 15. The 2026 has 48 complaints so far, again led by electrical (12), with power train next (8).
Two recalls reach the 2026. Recall 26V232, the fuel pipe leak above, runs through 2026. Recall 26V046 updates the instrument display software, by remote update or dealer visit. That campaign's 42,677 figure is shared with five other Kia nameplates, including the K4 and EV9, so it isn't a Carnival count.
Complaints and recalls by model year
Owner complaint totals come from NHTSA's flat file, downloaded October 10, 2026. The last column ignores NHTSA's catch-all unknown-or-other code. The EPA lists a 2027 Carnival, but no complaints were on file for it yet.
| Model year | Complaints | Injured | Crashes | Recall campaigns | Component named most |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2022 | 136 | 34 | 4 | 6 | Structure (31) |
| 2023 | 51 | 7 | 1 | 4 | Structure (11) |
| 2024 | 75 | 12 | 2 | 2 | Electrical system (13) |
| 2025 | 192 | 13 | 3 | 1 | Electrical system (91) |
| 2026 | 48 | 4 | 3 | 2 | Electrical system (12) |
The 2025 and 2026 are the youngest vans in the table, which makes the 2025's lead stand out more, not less.
Fix it or sell it?
A Carnival is young, so recall work comes first:
- Run the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup. Door software, fuel pipe and roof trim fixes are all listed as free.
- Fuel smell under the hood? Ask the dealer about 26V232 before anything else.
- Electrical faults on a 2025? Get a dealer diagnosis in writing. Our electrical problems guide walks through when those repairs stop making sense.
- Crash damage or a write-off? See wrecked or totaled. Open recalls don't stop a sale; open recall explains why.
When the estimate climbs toward the value of a running Carnival of the same year, letting it go unrepaired is the cleaner choice.
Selling it whole
Ask for an offer online or call (877) 421-6008. Tell us the year, the mileage and what's wrong. Say whether the van rolls and steers, whether the sliding doors open, and where the van is: curbside, in a garage, at a shop. Leave the seats, wheels and converter in place. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
Keep the signed title and a driver's license or other ID on hand for the hand-off. Still paying it off? Read still owe on the loan first. Comparing other Kia people-movers: the Telluride, or every Kia we cover.
Questions people ask
- Why does the 2025 Carnival have the most complaints?
- The counts alone don't say why. What they do show: 192 complaints on the 2025 as of October 10, 2026, and 91 of them name the electrical system. You can read the owners' own write-ups for your model year on NHTSA's site.
- Is my Carnival in the fuel leak recall?
- Probably worth checking. Recall 26V232 covers certain 2022-2026 Carnivals where fuel may leak at the joint between the fuel pipe and the fuel rail. The fix, tightening or replacing that pipe, costs the owner nothing. Search your VIN on NHTSA's recall page.
- Is the Carnival the same as the Sedona?
- It's the same job under a different US name. EPA data lists the Sedona through the 2021 model year and the Carnival from 2022. Kia has used the Carnival name in other markets since 1998, Wikipedia says.
- Will you buy a Carnival with a sliding door that won't latch or close?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Mention which sliding door is jammed, and if it's jammed open or closed, so the driver knows before loading.
