Selling an old or dead Kia Sephia
Brakes. Of the 1,764 complaints owners filed with NHTSA about the Sephia, 509 name the hydraulic service brakes. That is about twice the next category, the engine and cooling system at 248. On the 1998 alone, 187 of 491 complaints are about brakes.

The two Sephias
Wikipedia puts Sephia production at September 1992 to 2003, in two generations. The US model years in NHTSA's file run 1994 to 2002, and they split at the 1997-1998 changeover.
First generation, built 1992-1997
Wikipedia lists four engines: 1.5-liter B5 fours in two versions, a 1.6 B6D and a 1.8 BP. Sephia buyers picked a five-speed manual gearbox or Kia's F4A-EL four-speed automatic. The first generation came from Kia's Hwaseong plant in South Korea. Wikipedia notes the Sephia was close in size to a Ford Escort but priced closer to a Fiesta.
The 1994-1997 model years hold 403 complaints. Brakes lead on the 1995, 1996 and 1997. Two recalls touch these years:
- 94V134 (1994): the electronic speedometer sensor can seize, taking the speedometer and cruise control with it. 6,945 vehicles.
- 02V216 (1995-1998): the driver's belt buckle may "false latch" and leave the driver unrestrained in a crash. The campaign covers 189,706 "passenger vehicles," a count that may include other Kia models.
Second generation, built 1997-2003
Wikipedia lists a 1.5 B5-DE, a 1.6 B6 and a 1.8 T8D, again with the F4A-EL automatic or a G5M five-speed manual. In South Korea the Sephia name was retired in 2000 in favor of the Spectra.
The 1998-2002 model years hold 1,361 complaints, about three in four of the model's total. Brakes lead every year from 1998 through 2000 (187, 139 and 60). On the 2001 the air bags take the top spot (25). The 1998 and 1999 carry most of the recalls:
- Fuel pump power (99V317 and 99V318): connectors that can corrode with moisture, and a ground connector that can loosen, so the pump may not get enough current. Done together; each campaign lists 102,944 vehicles.
- Fuel valve (00V175): an ORVR valve that can shut off fueling before the tank is 95% full. 100,137 vehicles.
- Wipers (99V271): a wiper link ball socket that can pop off the motor under load, such as ice or snow. 90,054 vehicles.
- Hazard switch (02V207, 1998): only cars at 36,000 miles or less on July 15, 2002 qualified. 25,000 vehicles.
- Front buckles (04V305, 1999-2000): a buckle can click as if latched when it isn't. The 251,594 count covers "passenger and sport utility vehicles," so it is not the Sephia's alone.
Complaints and recalls by model year

|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1994 | 16 | 3 | 0 | 1 | Power train, brakes, seat belts (3 each) |
| 1995 | 64 | 12 | 1 | 1 | Hydraulic brakes (13) |
| 1996 | 118 | 9 | 4 | 1 | Hydraulic brakes (33) |
| 1997 | 205 | 30 | 5 | 1 | Hydraulic brakes (58) |
| 1998 | 491 | 34 | 16 | 6 | Hydraulic brakes (187) |
| 1999 | 428 | 50 | 42 | 5 | Hydraulic brakes (139) |
| 2000 | 289 | 48 | 3 | 1 | Hydraulic brakes (60) |
| 2001 | 147 | 34 | 3 | 0 | Air bags (25) |
| 2002 | 6 | 2 | 0 | 0 | Tires, brakes, electrical (1 each) |
Across all years, 222 complaints report a crash, 194 an injury and 4 a death.
Worth fixing?
On a Sephia, the answer usually turns on how big the job is. A brake complaint, the most common one in the Sephia's file, can mean anything from worn pads to a failed line, so get a mechanic's diagnosis before deciding. A failed engine on a car this old is a different story, and our blown engine guide covers that math. If it has sat for years, start with car sitting for years.
The rule of thumb: once a Sephia repair estimate nears what a running one would fetch, let it go as it is. The VIN can still be checked at NHTSA's recall lookup to see what was listed for it.
How to sell the Sephia whole
- Copy the VIN from the plate at the base of the windshield, and read the odometer if it still lights up.
- Get an offer online or call (877) 421-6008.
- Describe where the Sephia rests, whether in a driveway, behind a garage or on a shop lot. Mention flat tires or seized brakes so the driver brings the right gear. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
- Leave the Sephia complete, wheels and catalytic converter included.
- Sign over the title, and show your ID, when the driver comes. Lost the title? See selling with no title.
