Selling an old or non-running Lexus SC
Air bags fill more of the Lexus SC's complaint file than anything else: 77 of the 215 complaints owners have filed with NHTSA. Six of the eight recall campaigns listed for the SC are air bag campaigns, and all six cover the second-generation SC 430.

The newest SC is a 2010, so any one you own now is at least 16 model years old. Whether it's an SC 300 that has sat for years or an SC 430 that failed inspection, you can sell the whole car as it sits. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US.
The SC 430: an air bag story
Production of the second generation (Z40) ran from January 2001 to July 2010, Wikipedia says, all with a 4.3-liter 3UZ-FE V8. It used a 5-speed automatic through 2005 and a 6-speed automatic from 2006. The SC 430 model years hold 128 complaints.
The 2002 is the peak: 47 complaints, 20 of them about air bags. On the 2007, all 18 complaints are air bag complaints. Every year from 2002 to 2008 has air bags as its leading component.
The campaigns behind that:
- 15V285000 and 15V286000 (May 2015), listed for 2002-2007 models.
- 18V883000 (December 2018), passenger-side inflator module, 2002-2005 models.
- 16V127000 and 16V128000 (March 2016), passenger-side inflator module, 2008-2010 models built August 3, 2007 to July 30, 2010.
- 19V741000 (October 2019), 2002-2010 models; depending on the vehicle, dealers replace the driver inflator, the passenger inflator, or both.
These were big campaigns that also covered Corolla, Sequoia, Tundra and Pontiac Vibe models, among others. Their vehicle counts, from 71,163 to 1,973,468, are whole-campaign totals, not SC counts.
The first SC: SC 300 and SC 400
The first generation (Z30) was built from April 1991 to July 2000 and is related to the A80 Toyota Supra. The SC 300 used a 3.0-liter 2JZ-GE inline six, with a 5-speed manual offered through 1997. The SC 400 used a 4.0-liter 1UZ-FE V8 and got a 5-speed automatic for 1998-2000.
These cars have 87 complaints in all, and 40 of them are on the 1992, the first year. Its leading categories are the electrical system (10), hydraulic service brakes (6) and power train (5). That year also carries recall 92V046000: the anti-lock brake and traction control computer's program was incomplete, which could trap brake fluid pressure in the rear brake lines. Dealers replaced the computer. The campaign counted 1,415 vehicles.
The 1996-1997 cars are in recall 98V016000. A poorly assembled terminal on the starter motor's magnetic switch could short circuit if conductive liquid, such as road splash, got in. That campaign's 47,525 vehicles may include other models.
After 1992, complaints thin out fast. No first-generation year after 1993 reached 13.

Worth fixing, or time to sell?
An SC can be a keeper or a parts car, and the answer often turns on three things.
- Open air bag recalls. Check the SC's VIN on NHTSA's recall site, and a Lexus dealer can say if the inflator was ever replaced. Our open recall guide explains selling with one still open.
- How long it has sat. A 1990s SC 300 or SC 400 parked for years may need more than a battery. See car sitting for years and old project car.
- The quote against the value. Price the repair in writing, then look at what an SC of the same year and engine brings in running shape. A thin margin points to selling it unrepaired. What a junk car is worth explains what moves the price.
How to sell your SC whole
- Have the VIN ready, plus the mileage and whether it's an SC 300, SC 400 or SC 430.
- Ask for an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
- Describe where it's parked. A covered garage, a driveway or a storage unit all work. If your SC has flat tires or a locked steering wheel, tell us. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
- Don't strip it. Keep the factory wheels, the exhaust converters and the interior where they are, and mention anything already removed.
- When the SC is hauled off, sign the title over, give us any keys and show ID. After you sell covers plates and insurance by state.

Questions people ask
- Which SC year drew the most owner complaints?
- The 2002, first year of the SC 430, had 47 complaints at NHTSA on October 10, 2026. Twenty of them are about air bags. The 1992, the first SC year, is next with 40.
- Is my SC 430 covered by an air bag recall?
- Every SC 430 model year falls inside at least one of the six air bag campaigns: 15V285000, 15V286000 and 18V883000 for earlier years, 16V127000 and 16V128000 for 2008-2010, and 19V741000 for 2002-2010. Enter the SC's VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls and see if that fix is still open.
- Will you buy an SC 300 or SC 400 that hasn't run in years?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickup is free anywhere in the US. Mention flat tires or seized brakes, since a car that won't roll gets loaded differently.
