Selling a junk or dead car in Bangor

In Bangor, a wrecked or worn-out car can go to a licensed recycler without a salvage certificate. Maine law lets the owner of a salvage vehicle hand it straight to a licensed recycler, skipping the certificate of salvage an owner would otherwise apply for first. Selling to us is another route: we buy whole non-running and junk cars. You sell the whole car as it sits, and pickup is free anywhere in the US, from a driveway near Griffin Road to a side street downtown.

Bangor's own code did not turn up

We could not find Bangor's ordinances online, so nothing on this page quotes city code. The rules below are Maine statutes, and they reach Bangor like every other city. Bangor could have local rules about junk or unregistered cars as well. Check with Bangor city hall too, since state law may not be the whole story.

When a Bangor yard becomes a graveyard

State law calls junkyards and automobile graveyards a nuisance and puts them under regulation and control. For Bangor owners, Maine law matters here: keep 3 or more unregistered or uninspected motor vehicles or parts outside in a yard or field and the place counts as a graveyard. One dead sedan in a Bangor driveway does not meet it. A row of cars with lapsed registrations behind the house can.

Salvage, insurers and the 30-day clock

Maine's salvage definition has no damage percentage in it. A car is salvage if an insurer or the owner declared it a total loss, if it went to a recycler or salvage dealer, or if it has a certificate of salvage. After paying a total-loss claim on a Bangor car, the insurer turns in the title and files for a certificate of salvage within 30 days. An owner who declares the car salvage does the same before selling it, unless the buyer is a licensed recycler. The salvage title guide goes further.

Inspection in Penobscot County

Bangor cars, like all in Maine, must pass a safety inspection every year. The emissions test is an extra step for cars registered in Cumberland County, and Bangor is in Penobscot County, so a Bangor car faces the safety check alone. A car that fails it on rust or brakes can still be sold; see failed inspection.

Title work at the Griffin Road branch

Bangor titles go through Maine's Bureau of Motor Vehicles, under the Secretary of State, whose Division of Title Services is in Augusta. The BMV branch we checked in Bangor is at 396 Griffin Road, Suite 202 (207-942-1319). From central Bangor, it is about 2 miles to the southwest on a direct line.

Not every car here needs a title. Starting January 1, 2026, a Bangor car needs a Maine title only if it is a 2001 or newer, since the state titles just the last 25 model years. Older cars are exempt. If your Bangor car has a title, you fill out the assignment and warranty of title for the buyer when you hand it over, odometer information included. Lost the Bangor car's title? A replacement is $33, online or with form MVT-8; selling with no title explains the rest.

Under Maine law, after you hand over the car and transfer the title, you are not responsible as owner for harm caused by how it is driven later. As between you and the buyer, the transfer only counts once the title paperwork is finished and the fees are paid.

The plates stay with you

Once title changes hands, the registration ends. The state owns the plates, but a Bangor seller keeps them. Putting that number on a different car in the same registration year is $8. If a Bangor seller won't renew or move the plates within 6 months, they come off and get mailed with the registration to the Secretary of State. The plate cancellation request is Form MVR-60. After you sell covers the last steps.

A long way from our other Maine towns

The next town on this site is Lewiston, 85.3 miles away in a straight line. Brunswick is 87.1 miles off, Auburn 88.5 and Portland 107.8. That distance does not change the pickup. The truck comes to Bangor.

Getting an offer

Bangor sellers can start with the offer form, even for cars older than the 2001 model year. Do it online or call (877) 421-6008. The truck then meets the car where it sits in Bangor. For statewide rules, see Maine.

Questions people ask

Does Bangor have its own junk-car ordinance?
We could not find Bangor's code online. Maine law applies in Bangor as well. Under it, an outdoor spot holding 3 or more unregistered or uninspected motor vehicles or parts is an automobile graveyard. Bangor might add local rules on top, so check with them before leaning on state law only.
Does a Bangor car need an emissions test?
Maine requires a safety inspection every year in every county. The emissions test is added only for cars registered in Cumberland County, and Bangor is in Penobscot County.
Where can I handle Maine title work in Bangor?
We looked up a BMV branch at 396 Griffin Road, Suite 202, phone 207-942-1319. Measured directly, it lies about 2 miles southwest of downtown Bangor. A car more than 25 model years old needs no Maine title at all.
Can I sell a wrecked car from Bangor without a salvage certificate?
To a licensed recycler, yes. Maine lets an owner transfer a salvage vehicle to a licensed recycler without first getting a certificate of salvage.
