Selling a junk or dead car in Holyoke
Holyoke can tag a junk car before telling anyone. Section 74-99 lets an enforcing officer put a decal calling for a 72-hour notice to remove on an abandoned, junked or unlicensed car "without prior notice to the owner." Miss the window and the fine is $50 for every day the car stays. Another route: we buy whole non-running and junk cars. You sell the whole car as it sits, and free pickup anywhere in the US covers Holyoke too.

Section 74-99 in plain words
The ordinance declares "the parking, standing or storage of abandoned, junked or unlicensed vehicles on public or private property within the city" a nuisance. Responsibility falls on whoever controls the land, "whether as owner, tenant, occupant, lessee or otherwise." The limit is "three days (72 hours)."
A Holyoke garage is the way to keep a dead car legally. The section exempts a car "parked or stored in an enclosed building."
After the decal, the clock is 72 hours. Past that, the fine builds daily until the car moves.
Not on trash day
Section 74-3 settles a common question: "The city shall not collect junked motor vehicles, engines, transmissions, or any parts of such vehicles as part of its regular collection." An engine pulled out and left at the curb is covered too. The section says it leaves the board of health and police free to remove abandoned cars. Our junk car removal guide lists other ways to clear one.
Signing it over
The seller's job in Massachusetts is short. Put down the mileage. Each side of a Holyoke sale signs, prints a name and fills in the date. The Registry of Motor Vehicles private-sale list does not call for a notary. The sale price belongs on the title where a line exists; where none does, the buyer must file a bill of sale naming it. The bill of sale guide shows the fields.
Very old cars may have no title at all. Holyoke passenger cars bought before Nov. 26, 1990 with a model year of 1980 or earlier have never needed a title. Such a car sells on its prior registration with a bill of sale.
Once paid, end the registration online and give your insurer a copy of the receipt. The plates stay with you; destroy them or send them to recycling.

Questions people ask
- Will Holyoke warn me before tagging my car?
- No. Section 74-99 says an enforcing officer may tag the car "without prior notice to the owner" with a decal calling for a 72-hour notice to remove. The decal is the warning.
- Can I put an old engine or transmission out with the trash in Holyoke?
- No. Section 74-3 says the city "shall not collect junked motor vehicles, engines, transmissions, or any parts of such vehicles as part of its regular collection."
- My old car was built before 1980 and has no title. Can it be sold?
- Often, yes. Own an old Holyoke passenger car? Model year 1980 or before, and a purchase before Nov. 26, 1990, meant the state never asked for a title. Your previous registration and a bill of sale stand in for the title.
