Selling an old or non-running Mazda 323
Seat belts account for 104 of the 164 Mazda 323 owner complaints sent to NHTSA. That is more than every other component put together, and it matches the two seat belt recalls that cover the 1988 through 1994 model years.

The 323 in brief
Wikipedia dates this Mazda car line to 1963 and says it was front-wheel drive from 1980 on. In the US, the 323 took over from the GLC after 1985. EPA records list the Mazda 323 from 1986 to 1995 as a compact and a small wagon, including the 323 Wagon and the 323 Protege 4x4.
The NHTSA records split into three runs of years.
1986-1987: a handful of complaints
The first two years hold 12 complaints between them. On the 1987, 5 of 8 name the engine and engine cooling. NHTSA lists no recall campaign for either year.
1988-1989: the red buckle button
These two years have 73 complaints, and 51 of them are about seat belts. Recall 95V103005 explains the pattern. On a 323's front buckles, the red plastic buttons marked "PRESS" may crack, and pieces can fall in and keep the buckle from working right. Owners were told by the recall to look over both front buckles and the red button. That 360,433 count covers the whole campaign, so it may include models besides the 323.
The 1989 also holds 3 of the 323's 4 fire complaints.
1990-1995: motorized shoulder belts and the ignition switch
Seat belts still lead here: 52 of 79 complaints. The front shoulder belts on these cars are automatic. Recall 97V211000 says the rail can wear down until the cable that draws the buckle back gets stuck. Dealers replaced the belt assembly with a modified one, with an added dust lip, on cars that had the problem. That campaign's 134,000 vehicles include other models.
Every 1990-1995 323 is also in recall 15V674000 for the ignition switch. It began December 17, 2015, and dealers replace the switch free of charge. The 1,368,500-vehicle count spans seven Mazda lines, from the MPV to the 626.
The 1990 has the most crash reports of any year, 4.
Owner complaints and recalls, year by year
Numbers come from NHTSA complaints as we found them on October 10, 2026. Newer cars usually show fewer complaints just because they've been out a shorter time, but every 323 here is now over 30 years old. A recall campaign is counted in each year it covers.
| Model year | Complaints | Crash reports | Injured | Recall campaigns | Component named most |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1986 | 4 | 1 | 0 | 0 | Tie: wheels, electrical, seat belts (1 each) |
| 1987 | 8 | 1 | 0 | 0 | Engine and engine cooling (5) |
| 1988 | 35 | 2 | 4 | 1 | Seat belts (28) |
| 1989 | 38 | 2 | 1 | 1 | Seat belts (23) |
| 1990 | 19 | 4 | 1 | 2 | Seat belts (13) |
| 1991 | 20 | 1 | 0 | 2 | Seat belts (13) |
| 1992 | 15 | 1 | 3 | 2 | Seat belts (11) |
| 1993 | 10 | 0 | 0 | 2 | Seat belts (6) |
| 1994 | 11 | 1 | 0 | 2 | Seat belts (6) |
| 1995 | 4 | 0 | 0 | 1 | Seat belts (3) |
After seat belts, the components named most across all years are engine and engine cooling (16), power train (8), suspension (5) and vehicle speed control (5). No deaths are recorded.
Worth fixing, or time to sell?
A 323 rarely comes down to one big repair. It is usually age: old rubber, tired belts, a car that sat. A few checks help you decide.
- Run the VIN. Use NHTSA's recall lookup and ask a Mazda dealer whether the ignition switch work was ever done on your car.
- Check both front belts. A cracked buckle button or a motorized belt that sticks is the most common thing owners told NHTSA about.
- Be honest about the plan. If it was going to be a restoration that never started, see old project car. If it has simply been parked, sitting for years covers what to check first.
- Weigh age and miles. Our old or high-mileage car guide covers when an old car is worth more sold than fixed.
Selling your 323 whole
- Have these handy: the VIN, the title, and the miles if the odometer still reads.
- Ask for an offer online or call (877) 421-6008.
- Say where it is. A carport, a back field and a storage unit each need a different truck. Mention flat tires or brakes that have seized.
- Leave your Mazda 323 whole. Don't pull the engine, wheels or catalytic converter, and tell us if a part is already gone.
- When the truck arrives, give the driver the signed title, plus the keys if you still have them. After you sell explains plates and insurance state by state.
Lost the title? Start with selling with no title. Looking at the 323's relatives? See the Protege, the GLC or every Mazda model we cover.
Questions people ask
- Which Mazda 323 model years have the most NHTSA complaints?
- As of October 10, 2026, the 1989 323 tops the list at 38 complaints, with the 1988 next at 35. On both, most complaints are about seat belts: 23 on the 1989 and 28 on the 1988. Every other year has 20 or fewer.
- Is my 323 part of the ignition switch recall?
- If it is a 1990-1995, it is listed. Under recall 15V674000, opened December 17, 2015, Mazda dealers put in a new ignition switch at no cost. The campaign also covers the MPV, Protege, MX-3, 929, MX-6 and 626, so its 1,368,500-vehicle count is not the 323's alone. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
- Was the Mazda 323 the same car as the GLC?
- It followed it. Wikipedia says the American GLC lasted through 1985, after which it was replaced by the next-generation Mazda 323, and the GLC nameplate was retired.
- Will you buy a 323 that hasn't run in years?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Tell us the 323's location and whether the wheels roll, so we send a truck that fits.
