Selling a tired or non-running Mazda MX-3
Every one of the 58 seat belt complaints MX-3 owners sent NHTSA falls on just two model years, 30 on the 1992 and 28 on the 1993. That is more than four in ten of the MX-3's 131 complaints, packed into its first two years in EPA data.

Those were the years with motorized front shoulder belts, and both are in a recall for them. Whether your MX-3 has a locked-up engine, a broken spring or has been parked for years, you can sell the whole car as it sits. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickup is free anywhere in the US.
The MX-3 by the numbers
Wikipedia says the MX-3 was built in Hofu, Japan, from 1991 to 1998, with a 1.5-liter B5-ZE DOHC four and a 5-speed manual. It came after the Mazda Étude and is related to the Familia, 323 and Protege. EPA data lists it as a subcompact car for 1992 to 1996.
1992-1993: shoulder belts and the ignition switch
These two years hold 99 of the 131 complaints. Recall 97V211000 says the rail of the automatic shoulder belt can wear until the cable that retracts the buckle jams. On cars showing the problem, dealers put in a changed passive belt assembly that had a dust lip added. The 134,000 vehicles in that campaign take in other models, the 323 among them.
Those two years also fall under recall 15V674000 for the ignition switch. It started December 17, 2015, and a dealer puts in a new switch at no cost. Those 1,368,500 vehicles come from seven Mazda lines, so the number isn't just MX-3s.
The 1993 adds 5 power train complaints and holds the MX-3's only fire report.
1994-1995: front springs and air bags
Once the seat belt complaints drop away, other parts show. On the 1994, 9 of 19 complaints name the suspension. No MX-3 year has more crash reports than its 7, with the 1995 next at 6.
Recall 97V116000 covers 1992-1995 cars originally sold or registered in a long list of states, starting with Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana and Iowa. Dealers install a guard so a broken front coil spring can't contact the tire. The campaign is 25,000 vehicles.
Air bags show up here too: 5 complaints on the 1994 and 5 on the 1995, where they lead.
1991 and 1996: the edges
NHTSA files one complaint under a 1991 model year, an air bag report, though EPA data starts at 1992. The 1996 has 2 complaints and no recall listed.
Year-by-year NHTSA counts
Owner reports from NHTSA records through October 10, 2026. The last cars had fewer years for owners to file, though every MX-3 is now about 30 years old or more. A recall shows in every year it covers.
| Model year | Complaints | Crashes | Injured | Recalls | What owners named most |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1991 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 0 | Air bags (1) |
| 1992 | 45 | 1 | 1 | 3 | Seat belts (30) |
| 1993 | 54 | 2 | 5 | 3 | Seat belts (28) |
| 1994 | 19 | 7 | 4 | 1 | Suspension (9) |
| 1995 | 10 | 6 | 3 | 1 | Air bags (5) |
| 1996 | 2 | 0 | 0 | 0 | Exterior lighting, visibility (1 each) |
Across all years, after seat belts come suspension (18), air bags (14) and the electrical system (9). No deaths are recorded.
Fix it up, or let it go?
- Run the VIN through NHTSA's recall search. On a car this old, the spring guard or the ignition switch may never have been fitted.
- Spring snapped? A broken coil can cut into a tire. See broken suspension before you drive it anywhere.
- Was it a weekend project? If parts are half off, old project car and missing parts cover what still sells.
- Won't start at all? Start with car doesn't run.
How to sell your MX-3 whole
- Note your MX-3's VIN, mileage and what's wrong.
- Ask for an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
- Say where your MX-3 sits and if its wheels still turn. A low coupe on flat tires needs the right truck.
- Leave the parts on, engine, wheels and converter included.
- Before the truck comes, sign the title and keep it handy. See after you sell for plates and insurance in your state.
