Selling a Mazda RX-8 with a dead rotary

The first RX-8s collected most of the complaints. Of 783 complaints owners filed with NHTSA on the RX-8, counted October 10, 2026, 489 are about the 2004, its first U.S. model year. Add the 2005 and it's 651.

The reason an RX-8 usually ends up for sale is its engine. Every RX-8 runs a 1.3-liter RENESIS twin-rotor Wankel, and when it loses compression, owners face a rotary rebuild on a car that may not be worth one. If you'd rather not, sell the whole car as it sits. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US.

How a rotary gets into trouble

Wikipedia describes one chain of events specific to the RX-8. The ignition coil packs work two to three times harder in a Wankel than in a piston engine, so they can wear out much sooner. Weak coils let unburnt fuel reach the catalytic converter. The converter clogs, the engine overheats, and the side seal springs give out.

So a misfire on an RX-8 is worth taking seriously, and a clogged converter can be a symptom, not the whole problem. Our guides on a bad catalytic converter and a blown engine explain what each repair involves.

Mazda North American Operations extended the engine warranty on all 2004-2008 RX-8s. It covered the engine core only: the rotor housing and internal parts, plus seals and gaskets. Wikipedia says no other RX-8 market got an extended engine warranty for emissions.

The RX-8 was Mazda's last production car with a rotary engine. Mazda built 192,094 of them in Hiroshima, and the last one came off the line on June 22, 2012.

Early cars and facelift cars

Wikipedia splits the RX-8 into a pre-facelift run (2003-2008) and a facelift (2008-2012). Here the U.S. model years are grouped as 2004-2008 and 2009-2011.

2004-2008

These five years hold 766 of the 783 complaints. Power train is named most overall (213), and 141 of those are on the 2004. Steering is unusually high on the first year too: 69 complaints on the 2004.

Most recalls land here:

  • Fuel pump: campaign 16V793 replaces fuel pump sealing rings that can deteriorate and adds a heat pad to the tank. Campaign 17V354 replaces the fuel pump filter kit because heat can crack the main fuel pump pipe. Both list 69,447 vehicles.
  • Front control arms: on the 2004, 05V325 covers lower arms whose ball joint socket can crack (27,800 vehicles), and 17V355 replaces front lower arms whose ball joint can separate (35,332).
  • Exhaust heat: 05V317 covers 2004-2005 cars where long high-rpm running while parked can melt parts near the exhaust (52,000).
  • Manual gearbox: 04V075 replaces a cracked heat insulator on 2004 manuals (12,000).
  • Air bags: 04V074 rewired the passenger seat air bag on the 2004 (29,300). Driver inflator campaign 17V474 (308,992 vehicles) and passenger inflator campaigns 18V402 (308,591) and 19V781 (47,006) are DO NOT DRIVE recalls that also cover the Mazda6 and other models, so those counts are not RX-8 totals.

2009-2011

Wikipedia says that in November 2008 Mazda stiffened the body with a shock tower brace and front reinforcements, revised the rear suspension, and shortened the manual cars' final drive from 4.444 to 4.777. NHTSA holds only 17 complaints on the 2009-2011.

Recalls still apply. Campaign 21V744 fits new fuel pump mounting rings on 2009-2011 RX-8s (13,891 vehicles, Mazdaspeed6 included). Campaigns 18V403 (237 vehicles) and 19V488 (211) are DO NOT DRIVE passenger air bag recalls for 2009-2011 RX-8s that missed earlier repairs. Wikipedia also notes the RX-8 left Europe in 2010 after failing to meet emissions standards.

Rebuild or sell?

  • Low compression or no start when warm? Have the engine quote written down, then check it against what a healthy RX-8 of your year sells for. If those RX-8 numbers are near each other, selling it as is tends to be the better call.
  • Check engine light and misfires? See the check engine light guide; on a rotary, coils and the converter are linked.
  • Any year: run the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup. Fuel pump and air bag recalls are free at a Mazda dealer.

Selling it whole

  1. Have ready: VIN, mileage, manual or automatic, and what it does or doesn't do.
  2. Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Say where your RX-8 is and if it rolls. A car that sits this low loads easier when the driver knows ahead. Free pickup anywhere in the US.
  4. Leave the RX-8 whole. Don't take off the engine, wheels or converter, and mention any missing part.
  5. Title and ID at pickup. Then see after you sell.

Other Mazdas: the Mazda6, MX-6 and MX-3, or every Mazda model.

Questions people ask

Why do RX-8 rotary engines lose compression?
Wikipedia gives one chain: the ignition coils on a rotary work two to three times harder than on a piston engine and can wear out early. Unburnt fuel then reaches the catalytic converter and clogs it, the engine overheats, and the side seal springs give out.
Which RX-8 year has the most NHTSA complaints?
The 2004, the first U.S. model year, with 489 of 783 complaints as of October 10, 2026. Power train (141), engine and engine cooling (97) and steering (69) lead. The 2005 has 162. Each year after 2007 sits under 20, in part because those cars are younger.
Is my RX-8 covered by Mazda's engine warranty extension?
Mazda North American Operations extended the engine warranty on all 2004-2008 RX-8s, covering the rotor housing, internal parts, seals and gaskets. Ask a Mazda dealer to check your VIN before you decide.
Will you buy an RX-8 that won't start?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Say whether it cranks, whether it's a manual or automatic, and whether it rolls.
