Selling a damaged or dead Mercedes-AMG GT

The AMG GT has more recall campaigns than owner complaints: 39 against 36, per NHTSA records pulled October 10, 2026. Many of those campaigns are shared with other Mercedes models. The GT's own trouble shows up in a handful of them, mostly wiring.

Two cars wear the name

EPA's list mixes the two-door GT with the GT 43, GT 53 and GT 63 4matic+ cars. Recall notices call those the AMG GT 4-door Coupe. The two get different recalls, so check which one you have.

Complaints and recalls by generation

First generation (C190/R190), 2016-2023 here

Wikipedia lists model years 2015 to 2023 for the two-door: a front mid-engine, rear-drive car whose 4.0-liter M178 V8 uses two turbochargers and drives through a seven-speed dual-clutch. The 2016 to 2018 cars hold 13 complaints, and 10 of those are on the 2016. Power train leads that year with 4. If your gearbox is the problem, see dual-clutch trouble.

The 2019 has 13 recall campaigns, more than any other year. Two name the GT directly:

  • 20V048000: dealers replace the turbocharger oil feed line on 2019 AMG GT63 and GT63S 4MATIC cars. The 2,518 count also covers E63, S63 and G63 models.
  • 20V395000: wrong stability-control software on 2019-2020 AMG GT 53, 63 and 63 S cars, plus C63 and GLC 63. 5,399 vehicles.

The 4-door GT 43 and GT 53: wiring

Three recalls deal with wiring on these cars, all shared with the E53 or CLS53:

  • 22V533000: the transmission wiring harness may be routed wrong on 2021-2022 GT43 and 2019-2022 GT53 cars. 16,977 vehicles.
  • 24V445000: dealers replace a two-part transmission harness and connector on 2021-2024 GT 43 and 2019-2025 GT 53 cars. 22,422 vehicles.
  • 24V100000: the engine-bay ground for the 48-volt system may be loose on 2021-2023 GT43 and GT53 cars. 12,191 vehicles.

Electrical system ties power train as the component owners name most, 6 each. Fuel pump recalls 23V445000 and 23V880000 also include 2021-2023 GTs, and both the 2022 and 2023 list a gasoline fuel system complaint. Those two campaigns cover many Mercedes models, so their 143,551 and 79,676 counts are not GT numbers.

Second generation (C192), 2023 on

The 2024 to 2026 cars have 4 complaints, a small figure that partly reflects how few months they've been driven. Recall 26V281000 covers 2024-2026 cars whose head unit can restart mid-drive and disturb the gauge display; its 144,049 vehicles span six Mercedes lines. 25V129000 updates starter alternator software on the AMG GT 63 S E Performance.

Fix or sell?

Check the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup before you pay for anything. The wiring recalls on the 4-door cars are free at a dealer. For warning lights that aren't covered, see electrical problems.

Selling the GT whole

  1. Write down the VIN, mileage, version (two-door or 4-door) and the fault.
  2. Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Tell us where it's parked. A low car with a locked gearbox may need a flatbed with a gentle ramp, so mention it.
  4. Leave the wheels and body parts on. Missing parts change the offer.
  5. Bring the title and ID to pickup. Plate rules are in after you sell.

Questions people ask

Which AMG GT model year has the most NHTSA complaints?
The 2016 holds 10 of the 36 in the October 10, 2026 count, and power train shows up in 4. The 2019 follows with 6. Late-model GTs are new, with little time to draw any reports at all.
Why does the AMG GT have more recalls than complaints?
Many of its 39 campaigns are shared with other Mercedes models, such as the fuel pump and crash-notification recalls, so one campaign can list the GT alongside the C-Class, E-Class and others.
Will you buy an AMG GT that won't start or has crash damage?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US. It's a low car, so say whether it rolls and how it's parked.
