Selling a dead, junk or project Mercedes-Benz SL
One model year, the 2003, accounts for 105 of the SL's 435 complaints to NHTSA, about one in four, and suspension leads its list. No other SL year comes close: the 2004 is next with 54. This SL complaint count is from NHTSA on October 10, 2026. A single 1985 report is the oldest.

Complaints by generation
Wikipedia lists the SL's generations as W198 and W121 (1954-1963), W113 (1963-1971), R107 (1971-1989), R129 (1989-2001), R230 (2000-2011, production from 2001), R231 (2011-2020) and R232 (2022 on). The complaint file starts in the R107 years.
R107 and R129: 1985-2001
There is one complaint on a 1985. The 1990 through 2001 model years, the R129 era by Wikipedia's 1989-2001 production dates, add 137. The 1995 stands out with 40, and 26 of those name the electrical system. Wikipedia's R129 entry lists 2.8- and 3.0-liter six-cylinder engines and 5-speed manual, 4-speed and 5-speed automatic transmissions.
Three recalls belong to these years:
- 93V067000: on 1990-1992 cars, servicing the air filter housing can misroute a vacuum hose and damage its check valve. The fix is a redesigned hose. 14,300 vehicles.
- 96V175000: a misaligned headlamp wiper can jam and leave the washer pump running on 1996 models. Dealers replace the pump. 28,874 vehicles.
- 99V327000: on 1997 models, the driver air bag's ignition filament can corrode in very humid areas. Dealers replace the module. 4,402 vehicles. Air bags also top the 1997's complaints, with 5.
R230: 2003-2009, the peak
Mercedes-Benz's own recall 08V405000 calls 2003-2007 SLs "Model 230". Model years 2003 through 2009 hold 246 complaints, over half the SL total. Wikipedia's R230 entry lists 5-speed and 7-speed automatic transmissions.
Suspension leads the 2003 (26) and 2004 (14). Recall 08V405000 has dealers inspect and replace front ABC suspension sensors on 4,564 vehicles, a count that also includes CL-Class and S-Class models. Service brakes lead the 2005 and 2007 (6 each). Two Sensotronic Brake Control recalls cover these years. 04V296000 has dealers inspect the SBC hydraulic unit on 2003-2004 cars. 05V133000, for 2003-2005, adds a ground wire and bracket to the SBC pump. Their counts of 143,387 and 204,000 vehicles include other Mercedes models.
The 2004 holds the one death in the SL file.
R231 and R232: 2011-2023
From 2011 on, complaints are scarce: 38 across the 2011-2018 model years, 3 on the 2020 and 9 on the 2022-2023. Recalls are not scarce. The 2023 has one complaint and five recall campaigns. Some are SL-only: 19V571000 replaces passenger air bags that may have been sewn wrong on 457 2018-2019 SLs, and 23V676000 secures the starter and alternator wiring on 2022-2023 AMG SL55 and SL63 models. Others are shared. 24V115000 replaces main fuse boxes on 2023-2024 models, and 25V255000 follows up on cars where that repair used the wrong fuse box.
SL complaints and recalls by model year
Counted October 10, 2026. Quiet stretches are grouped. A single campaign may reach more than one year, so the final column totals something other than 29.

Repair, restore or sell?
Check the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup before anything else. On a 2003-2005 car, ask a Mercedes dealer whether the SBC brake work was done.
An R230 with suspension or brake trouble? Ask the shop to write the SL repair quote down. Then check what a clean SL of similar age and mileage sells for. If the SL repair bill comes close to that price, selling the car usually makes more sense. See broken suspension for how to weigh it. If an older SL turned into a restoration that stopped halfway, our old project car guide helps you decide to finish it or let it go.
How to sell your SL whole
- Have the VIN, mileage and condition ready, including the soft top or hardtop and whether it starts.
- Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
- Describe where it's stored. A low convertible in a back garage or under a cover needs the right truck, so say so.
- Leave it complete. Keep the hardtop, wheels and trim with the car, and mention anything already sold off.
- When the SL gets picked up, have its title and a photo ID ready. Plate rules vary by state; after you sell explains them.
Other Mercedes two-seaters and coupes: the SLK-Class, CLK-Class and AMG GT, or every Mercedes-Benz model.
Questions people ask
- Why does the 2003 SL have so many complaints?
- On October 10, 2026, it accounted for 105 of 435 SL complaints, mostly suspension (26), then the gasoline fuel system (11) and the electrical system (10). It was also the first year of two Sensotronic Brake Control recalls and of an ABC suspension sensor recall that Mercedes-Benz filed for 2003-2007 SLs.
- Will you buy an older SL that has sat for years?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and that includes a convertible that has been parked under a cover for a decade. You sell the whole car as it sits, with free pickup anywhere in the US.
- Is the 2022-2023 AMG SL starter wiring recall a big job?
- Recall 23V676000 says dealers secure the starter and alternator wiring harness free of charge on 2022-2023 AMG SL55 and SL63 models. The campaign names only SLs and counts 5,326 vehicles. Check the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
