Selling a dead or junk Mercedes-Benz CLA

What owners report on each group of years

We didn't collect generation history here, so the CLA's EPA years are grouped based on the complaint records.

The launch year: 2014

The 2014's 179 complaints outnumber the next two years combined. Eighteen of them are about vehicle speed control, nearly all of the CLA's 19 in that category. Recall 17V627000 covers 2014-2018 CLAs: dealers add grounding to the steering components. That campaign counts 495,290 vehicles, but it also takes in the GLA, C-Class, E-Class and others. Recall 21V197000, for a bonded front roof panel, names the CLA45 Coupe AMG among many C-Class, GLA and other models. Dealers fit a new panel.

Nine complaints are filed under 2013, a year EPA data doesn't list for the CLA.

2015-2019: engine and air bags

These five years have 216 complaints. The engine leads the 2015 (12), and air bags lead the 2016 (13), which also holds the one death in the CLA file. Air bags rank in the top two on the 2018 as well, with 8.

Each year in this run has a recall or two of its own:

• 15V662000: camshafts replaced on 2015 CLA250 and CLA250 4Matic cars built July 17 to August 31, 2015. The 857 vehicles also include GLA250s and the 2016 SLK300.
• 17V114000: an added fuse in the starter line on 2015-2017 CLAs. Its 307,629 vehicles also cover the C-Class and E-Class.
• 17V080000: passenger air bag modules replaced on some 2017 CLA250s, in a 2,112-vehicle campaign shared with E-Class and GLA models.
• 21V229000: a steering shaft bore that can allow too much play, on 2017 CLA250 and 2017-2018 AMG CLA45 cars. Dealers inspect and replace the shaft. 4,992 vehicles, including the B250e and GLA.

2020-2026: few complaints, many recalls

From 2020 on, the CLA has 40 complaints in seven years, but the 2020 sits in 11 recall campaigns, the most of any CLA year. Recall 19V685000 inspects driver air bag modules on 2020 CLA 250s, along with A 220 and GLC 300 models. Recall 23V732000 adds a brake pad wear gauge to 2020 CLA250 and AMG CLA35 and CLA45 cars. Also, 26V481000 puts a new driver's door lock on 2020-2021 CLAs, and letters were due September 18, 2026. Its 310,667 vehicles take in the A-Class, C-Class, GLA, GLB and GLC as well.

Fix the CLA, or sell it?

1. Look up open recalls with the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup. The steering, starter, air bag and door lock campaigns above are dealer work done free of charge.
2. 2014-2015 CLA with an engine light or engine noise? In those two years, engine complaints top the list. Get a written diagnosis and quote. The check engine light guide explains what the light can mean for a sale.
3. Air bags went off? On a compact car, a deployment plus body damage often outruns the car's value. See airbags deployed.
4. Weigh the repair price. Put it next to what a working CLA of your year and miles sells for. If the fix is close to that, selling the CLA broken is usually smarter.

How to sell a CLA whole

1. Note the VIN, the miles and the problem, and if the engine will fire up.
2. Ask for an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
3. Let us know its spot. Mention a low car on a steep driveway or in a tight garage, so we send the right truck.
4. Leave every part on, including the wheels and catalytic converter. Say if something is already missing.
5. On CLA pickup day, hand the title to our driver and show your photo ID. Plates are handled differently by state, so read what to do with plates.
