What owners reported, generation by generation
The table lists C-Class complaints owners filed with NHTSA, counted on October 10, 2026. Recent C-Class years have had less time on the road. Model years are grouped roughly by generation. Wikipedia's production dates for the generations overlap, so these groups are our own approximation.
W202, 1994-2000: wiring
These seven years hold 398 complaints. On the 1994, 1995 and 1996, electrical problems lead the list. The 1995 stands out: 86 of its 119 complaints name the electrical system.
W203, 2001-2007: engine, fuel and the sunroof
This group has 1,045 complaints. On the 2007, the fuel and propulsion system leads with 70 of 277. On the 2006, it's the engine, with 43 of 183.
Two recalls deal with the sliding sunroof. Recall 19V918 says the bond between the glass and the roof frame can break down, and the glass panel can detach. Recall 22V954 covers a glass panel that may not be properly secured. NHTSA lists both for 2001-2007 C-Class cars. They are whole-campaign counts that also include other Mercedes models: 747,928 vehicles in the first, 131,653 in the second.
W204, 2008-2014: the air bag years
This is the heart of the file. The 2008-2014 cars hold 3,926 of the 6,728 complaints, and air bags are the top component on every one of those years. On the 2008, 315 of 834 complaints name the air bags. On the 2012, it's 309 of 587.
The recalls line up with that:
- 15V711: a manufacturing error in the air bag control unit on 2008-2009 C300, C350 and C63 AMG cars. A Mercedes dealer inspects the C-Class part and replaces it if needed. The 2010 GLK350 is part of the 127,504 vehicles.
- 16V363, 17V017, 18V043 and 19V010: passenger frontal air bag module replacements covering 2008 through 2015 cars. Each campaign also covers other models, such as the GLK and the E-Class coupe.
- 14V177: a poor electrical ground at the tail lights of 2008-2011 C300, C350 and C63 AMG cars. Dealers replace the bulb holders and any corroded connectors. The campaign counts 252,867 vehicles.
Steering also shows up in the top three on the 2008 (99 complaints), 2009 (92) and 2010 (43).
W205, 2015-2021: engine complaints
These C-Class years drew 1,284 complaints, with the engine on top in each year. The 2015 has 107 engine complaints out of 449, the 2016 has 77 out of 315.
Recall campaign counts climb here, from 14 on the 2015 to 19 on the 2018. One reason is that newer campaigns often span many models. Recall 17V114, for example, adds a fuse to the starter circuit on 2015-2017 C300s, and its 307,629 vehicles include CLA and E-Class models too. Recall 21V058, a crash-notification software fix, covers 1,292,258 vehicles across sixteen Mercedes classes.
W206, 2022-2026: too new to judge
Five model years, 75 complaints. Two recalls to know about: 23V445 replaces the fuel pump on certain 2021-2023 cars, and 26V481 replaces the driver's door lock on certain 2022-2023 C-Class cars, with owner letters expected September 18, 2026. Both campaigns span several Mercedes models.

Repair it or let it go?
Get the free recall work done first, then size up the other repairs against the car's value when it runs.
- Air bag light on a 2008-2015? Put the VIN into NHTSA's recall lookup. Each air bag campaign named on this page lists its fix as free. To sell with a recall not yet fixed, read our open recall guide.
- 2015-2017 C300? Ask a dealer whether recall 17V114's starter fuse was installed.
- Engine problem on a 2015-2018? Have the shop price it on paper, then check what that year goes for when it runs. Blown engine walks through that call.
- Lights, gauges or modules acting up on an older car? See electrical problems before you spend on diagnosis.
Selling your C-Class whole
- Have the basics handy: VIN, miles, the problem, and if it rolls and steers.
- Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
- Say where your C-Class sits: a driveway, a garage, a street or a repair shop lot. If it won't roll, tell us so we send the right truck. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
- Keep it whole. Pulled parts change our offer, so let us know early about anything taken off.
- When the C-Class is picked up, sign the title over and show your photo ID. Plate rules differ by state; see after you sell.

Questions people ask
- Which C-Class years have the most NHTSA complaints?
- It's the 2008 C-Class, with 834 complaints as of October 10, 2026. The 2009 has 656, the 2012 has 587, the 2013 has 574 and the 2011 has 516. A 2023 or 2024 is still young, so a low count on one says little for now.
- Why do so many C-Class complaints mention air bags?
- Air bags are named in 1,948 of the 6,728 complaints, most of them on 2008-2014 cars. Mercedes ran several air bag recalls on those years, including passenger air bag module replacements (16V363, 17V017, 18V043, 19V010) and an air bag control unit check (15V711). Check the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls for anything not yet fixed.
- My 2015-2017 C300 won't start. Is there a recall?
- Recall 17V114 covers certain 2015-2017 C300 and C300 4Matic cars. Dealers install an additional fuse in the electrical line to the starter, free of charge. Check your VIN before you decide the car is done.
- Do I need to remove anything before you pick up my C-Class?
- No. You sell the whole car as it sits, wheels and catalytic converter included. Mention any pulled parts in your offer request.
