Selling a junk or non-running Mercury Marquis
The Marquis on this page is not the long, V8 land yacht in the photo. For 1983 through 1986, Mercury moved the name to a mid-size sedan and wagon on Ford's Fox platform, built in Chicago, and those are the only Marquis years in the EPA's data. Owners have filed just 23 complaints with NHTSA about them, and the electrical system comes up most often, in 7. If yours has quit, we buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US.

Recalls and complaints on the 1984-1986 cars
NHTSA's October 10, 2026 file holds 23 owner complaints. Electrical system tops the categories with 7, ahead of power train and vehicle speed control at 3 each. One complaint describes a crash and two mention a fire. Owners file these by choice, so the totals are no reliability rating. A later model year has had a little less time on the road to gather reports, though here the years sit close together.
| Model year | Complaints | Crash | Fire | Recall campaigns | Categories named most |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1984 | 10 | 1 | 1 | 1 | Electrical system 4, power train 2, gasoline fuel system 1 |
| 1985 | 5 | 0 | 0 | 1 | Electrical system 1, vehicle speed control 1, engine and cooling 1 |
| 1986 | 4 | 0 | 0 | 0 | Vehicle speed control 1, electrical system 1, wheels 1 |
| 1987 | 4 | 0 | 1 | 0 | Vehicle speed control 1, electrical system 1, seats 1 |
The 1987 row is how NHTSA's file lists those four complaints. The EPA has no 1987 Marquis, and Wikipedia says production ended after the 1986 model year.
Two recall campaigns reach these cars:
- 83V134 (1984): the material behind the front shoulder belt's D-ring bolts was too weak to hold them as the federal standard requires. Dealers installed stronger hardware. The campaign covers 530,000 vehicles and also lists the 1984 Capri and Lynx.
- 85V068 (1985): the rear shell of the power brake booster could be too thin and crack under repeated braking, letting the booster come apart. Dealers inspected the booster and replaced it if necessary. Its 14,008-vehicle count also takes in the 1985 Capri.
What's under the hood
Wikipedia lists the fourth-generation Marquis with a 2.3-liter Lima four and the 3-speed C5 automatic. For 1984-1985 there was also a throttle-body-injected 302 cu in V8 rated at 165 hp, paired with the 4-speed AOD automatic. The car is related to the Mercury Cougar of the time. Ford replaced it after 1986 with the front-drive Sable.
Worth fixing?
Electrical faults lead the complaint list, so get a diagnosis before you assume the worst; our electrical problems guide explains what to ask. A Marquis that has sat for a decade needs more than a battery, and sitting for years covers what to check. Hold any written estimate up against asking prices for running mid-size Marquis cars of that year. Should the bill come near that figure, let the Marquis go unrepaired. What a junk car is worth explains what moves the offer.
Selling it whole
- Dig out the Marquis title and read off its VIN. Title gone? See selling with no title.
- Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
- Tell us where the car is: a garage, a side yard, a barn or a curb. Flat tires or locked brakes are worth a mention, so the driver brings the right gear.
- Sell the whole car as it sits, wagon cargo cover and all. Mention any parts already removed.
The 1970 Marquis Brougham in the photo is from the earlier full-size years. Other Mercury models are on the make page.
Questions people ask
- Is the 1984-1986 Marquis a full-size car?
- No. Wikipedia lists the Marquis as full-size from 1967 to 1982 and mid-size from 1983 to 1986, when it rode on the Ford Fox platform. The Grand Marquis carried on as the full-size Mercury.
- What recalls cover the mid-size Marquis?
- Two: 83V134 for 1984 shoulder belt anchor bolts, and 85V068 for 1985 brake booster shells that could crack. Each campaign's vehicle total takes in other models too. Whether either still applies to one particular Marquis depends on its VIN, which nhtsa.gov/recalls will check for free.
- Why does NHTSA list complaints for a 1987 Marquis?
- NHTSA's file holds 4 complaints under a 1987 model year, even though the EPA lists the car only through 1986. We show them as filed and don't guess at the reason.
- Do you buy a Marquis wagon that has sat for years?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Let us know about flat tires or a battery that's gone dead; neither is a problem.
