Selling an old or dead Mercury Grand Marquis

On the 2003 to 2005 Grand Marquis, the lights are the story. Owners of those three model years filed 596 complaints with NHTSA about exterior lighting, out of 687 lighting complaints across every Grand Marquis from 1984 to 2011. Ford later recalled 2003-2005 Crown Victorias and Grand Marquis to replace the lighting control module.

A Grand Marquis with dead headlights, a loose steering column or a tired V8 can go as it sits. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickup is free anywhere in the US.

Figures below come from owner complaints in NHTSA's database, pulled October 10, 2026. Read them as a record of what owners reported, not a grade, and keep in mind the 2009-2011 cars have been on the road the shortest time.

Four generations at a glance

Wikipedia calls the Grand Marquis the longest-running Mercury nameplate, at 36 years and 2.7 million built. Every one is a body-on-frame, rear-drive car with a V8. Our figures begin at 1984, partway through the first generation.

1984-1991: electrical complaints and fires

The electrical system is the area named most on every model year from 1985 to 1991. Fire reports are a large share of these small counts: 11 of the 21 complaints on the 1986, 16 of 43 on the 1987 and 25 of 73 on the 1988. Recall 96V071 replaced ignition switches on 1988-1989 cars that could short internally, though that campaign of 7,900,000 vehicles covered many Ford models. On the 1987, recall 87V012 replaced steering centerlinks that could break at a bend.

1992-1997: brakes, cruise switches and engines

The 1992 drew 255 complaints with 114 injuries reported, and brakes topped its list (42). Brakes lead again on the 1995 (25). On the 1994, recall 94V152 had dealers check the nuts and bolts holding the rear brake adaptor to the axle, which could loosen and come off.

The cruise control deactivation switch got three recalls. Recall 99V124 replaced the switch on 1992-1993 cars because it could short and start an underhood fire. Recalls 07V336 and 08V051 later added fused or new wiring on 1992-1998 cars. Those two campaigns also took in pickups, vans and other Ford cars, so their 3,600,000 and 225,000 vehicle counts are not Grand Marquis alone.

By 1996 and 1997 the complaints shift to the engine and engine cooling: 79 on the 1996 and 120 on the 1997, with the fuel system next at 21 and 31.

1998-2002: a quieter stretch

Five model years produced 704 complaints. Engine and cooling tops the 1998 and 1999; cruise control tops the 2001 and 2002. Recall 00V200 sent revised jacking instructions to owners of 1998-2000 cars, because the old ones could lead you to set the jack on a frame weld.

2003-2011: lights, then steering

The 2003, 2004 and 2005 are three of the four busiest Grand Marquis years, and lighting leads each one (180, 173 and 243 complaints). Recall 15V861, a 296,004-vehicle campaign shared with the Crown Victoria, replaced the lighting control module free of charge starting April 14, 2017.

Steering comes next. The 2004 has 62 steering complaints, and steering leads the 2008. Under recall 13V385, dealers swapped the lower intermediate shaft in the steering of 2005-2011 cars, a 355,000-vehicle campaign that also covered the Crown Victoria and Lincoln Town Car. Recall 14V704 followed up on cars whose upper shaft had already been repaired. On the 2005, recall 05V518 moved a battery-cable fusible link that could rub on a cross member bolt.

Wikipedia dates the last Grand Marquis to January 4, 2011, which is also its date for the end of the Mercury brand.

The numbers by model year

We list Grand Marquis recalls by year, and one recall often touches many years, so the column totals more than 30.

Worth fixing?

A running Grand Marquis of your year has a market price; if the repair bill nears it, the math favors selling. Before that, check:

  1. Lights cutting out on a 2003-2005: ask a Ford dealer whether recall 15V861 was done on your VIN, or look it up at NHTSA's recall page. Our electrical problems guide covers the rest.
  2. Loose or clunking steering on a 2005-2011: recall 13V385 is the first thing to check.
  3. Overheating or a dead V8 on a 1996-1997: see head gasket or overheating and blown engine.
  4. Soft or grabbing brakes on an early-1990s car: our bad brakes guide explains what you're facing.

If the numbers don't work, repairs that cost more than the car walks through the choice.

Selling a Grand Marquis whole

  1. Note the VIN, mileage and what's wrong.
  2. Get an offer online or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Say what it's parked on and where, and whether the rear wheels turn. A full-size frame car sitting on flat tires in a driveway is fine; we just need to know so the right truck comes.
  4. Sell the whole car as it sits. Keep the battery, wheels and converter on it; if something's already gone, let us know.
  5. On Grand Marquis pickup day, keep the title out along with a driver's license or other ID. Missing title? Start with selling with no title. Plates and insurance afterward are covered in after you sell.

Questions people ask

Which Grand Marquis years have the most NHTSA complaints?
The 2005 tops NHTSA's file at 488 (counted October 10, 2026), ahead of the 2003 (362), 2004 (348), 1997 (316) and 1992 (255). The 2009-2011 Grand Marquis show few, partly because owners have had less time to report on those last years.
The headlights on my 2003-2005 Grand Marquis cut out. Is there a recall?
Yes. Recall 15V861 covers 2003-2005 Crown Victorias and Grand Marquis built October 3, 2001, to August 2, 2005. The remedy is a new lighting control module at no cost. Your Grand Marquis VIN, typed in at nhtsa.gov/recalls, shows any campaign that covered your car.
Will you buy a Grand Marquis that doesn't run?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Tell us whether the rear wheels turn and whether you have the key, since it's a long, heavy rear-drive car.
Is the Grand Marquis the same car as a Crown Victoria?
Close. Wikipedia lists the Ford Crown Victoria as its related model on the Panther platform, and several recalls on this page, including the lighting and steering shaft campaigns, cover both cars.
