Selling a Mercury Milan that's done
Four times between 2016 and 2019, Ford told some Mercury Milan owners not to drive their cars at all. Recalls 16V384, 17V024, 18V046 and 19V001 all replace the passenger front air bag inflator, and every one of those notices says to park the car until a dealer has replaced the part. Air bags are also what Milan owners complained about most: 774 of the 2,578 complaints filed with NHTSA.

If yours still has an open air bag recall, or it has simply stopped running, it doesn't need to go anywhere under its own power. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US.
The complaint figures are owners' reports to NHTSA, tallied on October 10, 2026. These count Milan complaints and don't rate dependability. As the last Milan, the 2011 has given owners the fewest years to send in reports.
Check the air bag recalls first
Seven of the Milan's 13 recall campaigns concern air bags. The vehicle numbers in this table belong to entire campaigns that also include Fords and Lincolns such as the Fusion, Zephyr, MKZ, Edge and Ranger.

Problems by model year
The Milan had one generation. Wikipedia splits it by engine: a 160-hp 2.3-liter four from 2006 to 2009, then a 175-hp 2.5-liter four for 2010. A 3.0-liter V6 and a 5-speed Mazda manual were also offered, and EPA lists a front-drive Milan Hybrid.
2006-2009: air bags and brakes
These four years total 1,325 complaints. Air bags lead the 2006 (126), 2007 (227) and 2008 (208), and come second on the 2009 (83). Brakes are the other theme. Owners filed 104 service brake complaints on the 2007, 163 on the 2008 and 94 on the 2009, where brakes top the list.
Recall 19V904 addresses one brake issue on 2006-2010 cars: valves in the ABS hydraulic control unit may react with certain brake fluids. Dealers flush the system with DOT 4 fluid and fit a new reservoir cap. That campaign covers 600,166 vehicles, including the Fusion, Zephyr and MKZ.
Wikipedia notes the Milan became Mercury's best-selling model in 2008.
2010-2011: the 2.5 engine and the busiest year
The 2010 alone drew 1,062 complaints, with 40 crashes and 22 injuries reported. Steering leads (229), then the engine (124) and air bags (114). No other Milan year is tied to as many recall campaigns: 11. The 2011 adds 191 complaints, led again by steering (69).
The recalls line up with those complaints. Recall 15V340 had dealers check the power steering control module on 2011 Milans for trouble codes, in a 393,623-vehicle campaign spanning several Ford and Lincoln models. Recall 15V793 updated the powertrain control module on 2010-2011 cars, in a fuel-system campaign of 411,205 that includes the Fusion. Recall 11V574 had dealers check the rear brake discs for flatness on 2010-2011 cars with 17-inch steel wheels. Two smaller 2010 recalls replaced front seat recliners (10V161) and fixed a transmission park rod pin on 19 cars (10V222).
Milan complaints and recalls by year
The recall column counts campaigns per model year; many cover several years, so it doesn't total 13.
| Year | Complaints filed | Crashes | Injuries | Deaths | Recall campaigns | Leading areas |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2006 | 214 | 6 | 4 | 0 | 4 | Air bags 126, structure 19 |
| 2007 | 434 | 17 | 9 | 0 | 4 | Air bags 227, service brakes 104 |
| 2008 | 451 | 22 | 8 | 1 | 4 | Air bags 208, service brakes 163 |
| 2009 | 226 | 12 | 5 | 0 | 6 | Service brakes 94, air bags 83 |
| 2010 | 1,062 | 40 | 22 | 0 | 11 | Steering 229, engine 124 |
| 2011 | 191 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 7 | Steering 69, power train 19 |
Repair or sell?
Look up the going price for a running Milan like yours, then compare the estimate.
- Air bag recall open? The remedy is a dealer job under the recall, so ask a Lincoln or Ford dealer before deciding anything else.
- Steering assist gone on a 2010-2011? Ask a dealer whether recall 15V340 applies to your VIN. If not, our electrical problems guide helps you weigh a module repair.
- Brake warning or a soft pedal on a 2006-2010? Check recall 19V904, then see bad brakes.
- Hybrid that won't go? Our hybrid battery guide covers that decision.
When the quote passes the car's value, repairs that cost more than it's worth lays out the options.
How the sale works
- Write down your Milan's VIN, its odometer reading and what broke, along with any open recall numbers.
- Get an offer online or call (877) 421-6008.
- Tell us where it sits (driveway, street, lot or dealer service bay) and whether it rolls.
- Leave it whole. Sell the whole car as it sits. If a wheel or the converter has been removed, mention it.
- Hand the driver the signed title and show ID. No title? See selling with no title. For plates and insurance, read after you sell.

Questions people ask
- Which Mercury Milan year has the most NHTSA complaints?
- The 2010 by a wide margin: 1,062 in NHTSA's October 10, 2026 count, more than the 2008 (451) and 2007 (434) combined. The 2009 (226), 2006 (214) and 2011 (191) follow; the 2011 has also been on the road the shortest time.
- Can I sell a Milan that has an open do-not-drive air bag recall?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US; the truck loads it where it's parked. Mention any open Milan recall when you request an offer.
- Is the Milan just a Ford Fusion?
- Mechanically, yes. Wikipedia calls it a rebadged Fusion with its own front and rear styling, a waterfall-style grille and LED taillamps. Most Milan recalls on this page also cover the Fusion, which is why their vehicle counts run so high.
