Selling a junk or broken Mercury Mariner
The 2008 Mariner draws more complaints than any other year of the model: 577 of the 1,512 that Mariner owners had sent NHTSA by October 10, 2026, when we counted. More than half of the 2008's complaints, 293, name the steering.

Steering, fuel and hybrid trouble by generation
Mercury built the Mariner in Claycomo, Missouri, in two generations, according to Wikipedia. It rode on Ford's CD2 platform and was related to the Mazda Tribute. Gas versions of the Mariner came with either a 2.3-liter four-cylinder or a 3.0-liter V6. Both engines used a 4-speed automatic. Mercury also sold a gas hybrid Mariner. EPA's data lists front-wheel-drive, 4WD, flex-fuel and Hybrid versions from 2005 through 2011.
First generation, 2005-2007
Production ran from August 2004 to December 2006. Complaints stayed low here: 67 on the 2005, 101 on the 2006 and 64 on the 2007. Power train leads on the 2005 and 2007. The 2006 lists engine (14) and service brakes (13) first. The 2005 has 17 complaints that report an injury, more than any other Mariner year.
Three recalls touch this run:
- 06V111000 (2005). SUVs built without side air curtains or a moonroof failed federal safety standard 201 for interior impact. Dealers added energy-absorbing material above the headliner. The 134,365 vehicles are the whole campaign's count.
- 05V520000 (2006). Wiper motors may have been built with no grease on the output shaft gear. That campaign's 199,942 vehicles also included trucks and passenger cars, so the number is not Mariners alone.
- 14V526000 (2006-2008 Mariner Hybrid). Dealers replaced the Motor Electronics Coolant pump with an improved brushless pump. The 70,209 count includes Ford Escape hybrids.
Second generation, 2008-2011
Production ran from November 2006 to October 2010, when Ford ended the Mariner along with the Mercury brand. This is where the complaints pile up: 577 on the 2008, 336 on the 2009, 279 on the 2010 and 87 on the 2011. Steering is the top component on all four.
Recall 14V284000 lines up with that pattern. Ford recalled 2008-2011 Escape and Mariner SUVs built from August 18, 2006 through September 11, 2010, because the steering torque sensor in the electric power steering could fail. The listed fix was new software for the power steering control module and the instrument cluster. Its 740,878 vehicles count the whole campaign, Escapes included.
On the 2010, fuel/propulsion system is the second most named component (47), and it is third on the 2011 (15). Recall 16V777000 covers 2010-2011 Mariners for the fuel delivery module flange, replaced with one that has a redesigned fuel supply port. Its 329,265 vehicles include 2010-2012 Escapes.
One more campaign, 15V606000, covers the manual shift lever bolt on Escape and Mariner automatics with the 2.3L or 3.0L engine. Only 57 vehicles were in it.
Mariner complaints and recalls by model year
Mariner complaint totals come from NHTSA, counted on October 10, 2026. A 2010 or 2011 Mariner had been owned for fewer years by then than a 2005, so owners had a shorter window to report. Ford often wrote one Mariner campaign across two or three model years; each year it names gets counted.
| Model year | Complaints | Crashes | Injured | Recall campaigns | Most-named component |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2005 | 67 | 7 | 17 | 2 | Power train (10) |
| 2006 | 101 | 8 | 4 | 3 | Engine (14) |
| 2007 | 64 | 2 | 2 | 2 | Power train (11) |
| 2008 | 577 | 11 | 5 | 3 | Steering (293) |
| 2009 | 336 | 11 | 3 | 1 | Steering (162) |
| 2010 | 279 | 3 | 6 | 2 | Steering (55) |
| 2011 | 87 | 2 | 1 | 2 | Steering (18) |
| 2012 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | Service brakes (1) |
Three complaints across every year report a fire: one on the 2006 and two on the 2010. None report a death. The single 2012 complaint sits under a year past the Mariner's last EPA listing.
Fix the Mariner, or sell it as it sits?
Start with the recall check, then set the repair quote beside the price of a running Mariner with similar miles and the same drivetrain.
- Run the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup. On a 2008-2011, see whether 14V284000 shows as open, and ask a Ford dealer about it before you price a steering repair.
- Hybrid won't go? The coolant pump campaign covers 2006-2008 Mariner Hybrids. Our hybrid battery guide explains how to weigh a hybrid system that has failed.
- Repair quote near the Mariner's value? If fixing it uses up most of what a running one is worth, selling it unrepaired usually makes more sense. See repairs cost more than it is worth.
How to sell your Mariner whole
- Gather the basics: the VIN, the mileage, the problem, and whether it's front-drive, 4WD or the hybrid.
- Ask for an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
- Describe the spot (driveway, carport, lot) and whether the SUV rolls, so the truck can meet it there. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
- Leave it whole. Don't pull the battery pack, the catalytic converter or the wheels. Tell us if your Mariner is missing a part.
- On Mariner pickup day, you give the driver the title and show your ID. Plates follow your state's rules; after you sell explains.
Lost the title? Read selling with no title. Every Mercury we cover is on the Mercury page, including the Mountaineer.
