Selling an old Mercury Topaz

In the 392 Topaz complaints NHTSA had on October 10, 2026, fires beat crashes 53 to 25. The electrical system is the top topic, named in 94.

The youngest Topaz is a 1994, so most that are left sit in garages and side yards. You can sell one whole, running or not. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickup is free anywhere in the US.

What NHTSA's file shows, in two stretches

EPA lists the Topaz from 1984 through 1994, as the Topaz and the Topaz AWD, and its file also carries a diesel powertrain. The complaint data splits naturally into the quiet early years and the busier later ones.

1984-1987: few complaints, many recalls

These four years hold just 40 complaints between them, but the 1984 alone is listed in 5 recall campaigns:

  • 83V055000: a short in the instrument panel could overheat the headlamp and interior light switches.
  • 83V134000: the bolts holding the shoulder belt's D-ring were not supported well enough to meet the federal standard. The campaign covered 530,000 vehicles in all.
  • 85V086000 and 85V145000 (1984-1985): rear suspension control arm-to-spindle bolts could fracture, letting the spindle come loose from the arm.
  • 86V082000: a bolt between the driver's seat back and the cushion frame could break from fatigue.

The 1985 adds 85V134000, an engine control processor that could cause an unexpected open throttle. Electrical leads the complaints on the 1984 and 1987, with 5 fire reports on each of those years.

1988-1994: wiring, fires and seat belts

Complaints climb from 21 on the 1988 to 71 on the 1993. Through 1991 the electrical system is the top component every year, peaking at 20 on the 1990, which also carries 11 fire reports. Recall 96V071000 lists the 1988-1993 Topaz for an ignition switch that could short inside; dealers replaced the switch. That campaign counted 7,900,000 vehicles across Ford's lineup, so the number says nothing about Topaz volume alone.

From 1992 on, seat belts take over the top spot: 14 on the 1992, 15 on the 1993 and 12 on the 1994. No recall in the file covers belts on those years.

Two more campaigns fall in this stretch. 88V024000 replaced throttle position sensor screws that could loosen on the 1988. Recall 97V019000 covered 1992-1994 Topaz and Tempo cars with the 3.0L engine in South Dakota, North Dakota, Nebraska, Minnesota, Iowa and Alaska. Each got a self-resetting circuit breaker added to the cooling fan's low-speed circuit.

Topaz complaint table

Topaz complaints sent to NHTSA, as we counted them on October 10, 2026. The 1994 reached owners ten years after the 1984, so it had that much less time to gather reports. The 1995 row is a complaint filed under a year after the Topaz's last EPA listing.

Keep it running, or sell it?

A Topaz is at least 32 model years old. Ask what a running one in the same shape would bring, then compare the repair.

  • Wiring or switch trouble? On 1988-1993 cars, check the VIN at NHTSA for the ignition switch campaign. Our electrical problems guide helps with the rest.
  • It already burned? A car with fire damage still sells whole; see fire damage.
  • Parked for years? Read sitting for years before you buy a battery and tires.

How to sell a Topaz whole

  1. Copy your Topaz VIN from the dash or the title, and check the odometer.
  2. Ask for an offer, or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Let us know the spot and if the wheels still turn. The truck meets the car there, and pickup is free anywhere in the US.
  4. Leave it complete. Mention anything removed.
  5. For the Topaz handoff, bring its title and your photo ID. What to do with plates and insurance is on after you sell.

The Mystique took over from the Topaz. Other Mercurys are on the Mercury page.

Questions people ask

Which Topaz year has the most complaints?
The 1993, with 71 owner reports in our October 10, 2026 count. The 1994 has 63 and the 1992 has 62. Seat belts are the top component on all three.
Was the Topaz in the big Ford ignition switch recall?
Yes. Recall 96V071000 lists 1988-1993 Topaz model years for an ignition switch that could short inside. Dealers replaced the switch. Its 7,900,000 vehicles are the whole campaign, which covered other models too.
Will you take a Topaz that has sat for years?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Sell the whole car as it sits.
