Selling a dead Mercury Mystique

NHTSA had 1,017 Mystique owner reports on October 10, 2026, and 335 are for the first-year 1995, a car that also sits in 8 recall campaigns. Mystique owners pointed to engine and engine cooling more than any other part, 163 times over every year.

The car in brief

Wikipedia describes the Mystique as Mercury's version of the Ford Mondeo, built at Kansas City Assembly in Claycomo, Missouri. It took over from the Ford Tempo and Mercury Topaz. Engines were the 2.0-liter Zetec four and the 2.5-liter Duratec 25 V6. US Mystique buyers got a 5-speed manual or, as the other option, a 4-speed automatic. Mystique production ended December 23, 1999. EPA lists the model from 1995 through 2000.

Problems, grouped by model years

1995-1997: fans, wiring and the filler pipe

The 1995 lists engine and engine cooling 75 times, the electrical system 55 times and power train 37 times. It also has 15 complaints that report a fire. The 1996 follows the same order, at 32, 30 and 19, with 12 fire reports.

Recall 00V367000 speaks to the cooling side. On 1995 cars with the 2.0L or 2.5L engine and 1996 cars with the 2.5L, the engine cooling fan motor bearings could tighten, up to the point where the motor stalled. Dealers installed a positive temperature coefficient device in line with each fan motor. The 262,559 number covers every vehicle in that campaign, so not all of them are Mystiques.

The fuel filler pipe drew four separate campaigns:

  • 94V184000 (1995): a metal shield on the plastic filler pipe could build static charge during refueling. Dealers added a ground strap.
  • 94V203000 and 95V232000 (1995): the filler pipe opening reinforcement could leak at the weld. The fix was a replacement tank.
  • 99V247000 (1996): the filler pipe vent hose could turn brittle and crack.

Early cars also carry 95V228000 (cracked front belt anchor tabs, 1995), 95V009000 (rear door glass not tempered correctly, 1995) and 97V225000 (throttle cables damaged at assembly on 1995-1996 cars with traction control).

1998: suspension complaints and a pile of recalls

The 1998 has 231 complaints, and suspension leads with 44. Recall 01V255000 is about the front coil springs on 1998 cars made in Kansas City, sold or registered in states such as Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland and Massachusetts. Dealers installed spring catcher brackets.

The 1998 is listed in 8 campaigns in all. Among them: an accelerator cable that could fray and fail to return (99V194000), air bag sensor wiring whose insulation could crack (99V243000), and unclear headlamp aiming instructions in the owner guide (98V028000). Three campaigns span several years: the floor shift control could be damaged by some interior cleaners (98V233000, 1995-1998), headlight switch terminals could overheat (99V103000, 1996-1998, 605,581 vehicles campaign-wide), and the heater blower resistor got replaced (01V230000, 1996-1998, 342,962 vehicles campaign-wide).

1999-2000: body structure

Structure is the top component on both late years: 26 complaints on the 1999 and 14 on the 2000. The 1999 also has 14 crash reports and the model's only reported death. Recall 99V060000 is for 1999 automatic cars that could let the key slip out of the ignition while the shifter was out of Park. Recall 00V075000 replaced a rear brake valve that could corrode on cars without ABS, 1996-2000. That campaign was expanded to 1999-2000 Ford Contours, so its 436,200 vehicles are not all Mystiques. The 2000 also sits in 00V228001, a TRW seat belt buckle campaign that spanned cars, trucks, SUVs and minivans.

Mystique complaint counts by year

Mystique counts come from owner reports we pulled out of NHTSA on October 10, 2026. A 2000 Mystique had five fewer years than a 1995 to gather owner reports before that pull, which is part of why the late counts run lower. The 1994 and 2001 lines hold reports filed under years the EPA never listed for the Mystique.

Fix the Mystique or let it go?

  1. Check the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup for the fan, spring or brake valve campaigns.
  2. Running hot? Recall 00V367000 covered cooling fan motor bearings that could tighten up to and including motor stall. If the head gasket is already gone, read head gasket or overheating before you pay for a teardown.
  3. Lights, switches or blower acting up? The headlight switch and blower resistor recalls point at known weak spots. Our electrical problems guide covers when wiring trouble is worth chasing.
  4. Broken front spring? See broken suspension.

Selling the Mystique whole

  1. Have the Mystique's VIN, its odometer number and some quick notes on what's wrong nearby.
  2. Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Say where your Mystique is parked, a driveway, street, garage or repair shop lot, and if its wheels turn. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
  4. Keep the parts on your Mystique, and mention any that came off already.
  5. Have the Mystique's title and a photo ID out when our driver arrives. After you sell explains plates and insurance.

Questions people ask

Which Mystique year has the most NHTSA complaints?
The 1995, at 335 in the October 10, 2026 pull. The 1998 is next with 231, then the 1996 with 185.
Was there a recall for the Mystique's cooling fans?
Yes. Recall 00V367000 covers 1995 cars with the 2.0L or 2.5L engine and 1996 cars with the 2.5L. The fan motor bearings could tighten up until the motor stalled. Dealers installed a positive temperature coefficient device in line with each fan motor. The campaign's 262,559 vehicles may include other models.
Will you buy a Mystique that overheats or won't start?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickup is free anywhere in the US. Sell the whole car as it sits; just tell us what it does and where it's parked.
