Selling an old or broken Mercury Tracer
On the 1997 Tracer, air bags are the component owners named most: 43 of the 142 complaints owners of that year had lodged with NHTSA by our October 10, 2026 count. No other Tracer year comes close to 142. Across the whole model, 47 of 567 complaints report a fire and 4 report a death.

Three generations, three different weak spots
Wikipedia lists three Tracer generations. Mercury sold it as the replacement for the Lynx and dropped it after the 1999 model year, when Ford moved from the Escort to the Focus.
1988-1989: the Mazda-based subcompact
The first Tracer was assembled in Hermosillo, Mexico, on the Mazda BF platform, related to the Mazda 323. It used a 1.6-liter Mazda B6 four and came as three- and five-door hatchbacks and a wagon. NHTSA holds 21 complaints on the 1988 and 16 on the 1989.
Seat belts lead the 1988 list with 7. Two belt recalls match: 89V085000 replaced front lap and shoulder belt retractors built with out-of-tolerance parts, and 95V103011 dealt with red plastic buckle release buttons marked "PRESS" that could break. That second campaign covered 1987-1989 vehicles and 265,000 of them, so it reached well past the Tracer. A small 1988 campaign, 87V092000, swapped wrong filler neck screws on 191 cars.
1991-1996: the Escort-based compact
Production moved to Wayne, Michigan, and the Tracer became a relative of the Ford Escort, sold as a sedan and a wagon. Engines were a 1.9-liter CVH four or a 1.8-liter DOHC 16-valve four, with a 5-speed manual among the transmissions.
The 1991 lists the electrical system 16 times and the fuel system 11 times, with 9 fire reports. Recall 92V117000 replaced the fuel pump sending unit after fatigue cracks were found at a solder joint on the fuel return tube. Recall 93V057000 covered roll pins that could let the ignition lock shift in the steering column.
The 1995 is the fuel-system year: 34 of its 96 complaints. Two campaigns, 97V144000 and 97V145000, cover 1995 cars with the 1.9L engine registered in certain states, where the fuel tank could crack near the heat shield attachments. Dealers removed the attachments. The 1994 has the most crash reports of any Tracer year (18, with 17 injured), and the 1997 ties it on injuries (15 crashes, 17 injured); the 1993 has 11 crashes and 13 injured. The 1993 also has 3 of the model's 4 reported deaths.
1997-1999: the final Tracer
Still built in Wayne, now with a 2.0-liter CVH single-port four. The 1997 is the busiest year in the whole file: 142 complaints, 17 fire reports, 17 injured and 1 death. Air bags lead (43), then engine and engine cooling (20) and the electrical system (17). Recall 02V323000 shielded the integrated air bag monitor after water or other liquids could short it. The 1998 has 44 complaints led by suspension (10), and the 1999 has 20.
Tracer complaints by model year
Tracer owner reports held by NHTSA on October 10, 2026. Later Tracers had fewer years with owners than the 1988 before that date, so their totals are lower. Campaigns spanning several years appear on each one.
| Year | Complaints | Fire | Injured | Deaths | Recalls | Top component |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1988 | 21 | 1 | 1 | 0 | 3 | Seat belts (7) |

| 1990 | 2 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | Structure / steering (1 each) |
| 1991 | 60 | 9 | 3 | 0 | 2 | Electrical system (16) |
| 1992 | 24 | 5 | 2 | 0 | 1 | Electrical system (7) |

| 1995 | 96 | 0 | 7 | 0 | 3 | Fuel system (34) |
| 1996 | 12 | 0 | 10 | 0 | 0 | Air bags / seat belts (3 each) |
| 1997 | 142 | 17 | 17 | 1 | 1 | Air bags (43) |
| 1998 | 44 | 1 | 3 | 0 | 0 | Suspension (10) |
| 1999 | 20 | 2 | 1 | 0 | 0 | Brakes / electrical (3 each) |
| 2000 | 2 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | Engine / brakes (1 each) |
The 1992 also sits in 92V103000, a stop lamp switch that could fail to light the brake lights. The 1994-1995 driver air bag campaign, 94V218000, covered only 240 vehicles.
Is a Tracer worth fixing now?
The youngest Tracer is a 1999. Set the repair bill next to the price a working Tracer of that year and mileage brings.
- Air bag light on a 1997? Look up the VIN at NHTSA for 02V323000. If the bags already went off in a crash, read airbags deployed.
- Fuel smell on a 1995 1.9L? The tank-crack campaigns are the first thing to check.
- Just worn out? See old or high mileage on when a long-lived car is worth more sold whole.

Questions people ask
- Which Tracer year has the most complaints?
- The 1997, the first year of the last generation, with 142 complaints in the October 10, 2026 tally. Air bags are named in 43 of them. The 1995 is next with 96.
- Was the 1997 Tracer recalled for its air bags?
- Yes. Recall 02V323000 covers the integrated air bag monitor, which could be contaminated by water or other liquids and short inside. Dealers installed a shield over it and greased the connector. The campaign's 396,217 vehicles may include other models. Checking your Tracer's VIN on nhtsa.gov/recalls tells you if yours is one.
- Can I sell a Tracer wagon that hasn't run in years?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars and offer free pickup anywhere in the US. Say about how long the Tracer has sat and whether its tires stay up.
