Selling a dead Mercury Villager

The Villager's engine complaints sit almost entirely in its first four years. Owners filed 359 complaints with NHTSA naming the engine and engine cooling, and 335 of them are on 1993 to 1996 vans. The 1993, the very first year, leads every Villager with 414 complaints.

If your Villager is overheating, leaking fuel smell into the garage or just won't start, it can go exactly as it is. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, minivans included, with free pickup anywhere in the US.

We counted the complaints Villager owners filed with NHTSA, as of its records on October 10, 2026. They reflect reports, not a score for the van. The 2001-2002 Villagers were in service the fewest years, so owners had less time to file.

A Nissan engine in a Mercury van

Wikipedia says Ford and Nissan developed the Villager together and Nissan sold it as the Quest. It was built in Avon Lake, Ohio, on the Ford VX54 platform and is related to the J30 Nissan Maxima.

1993-1998: engine, fuel and the first-year van

The first generation used Nissan's 3.0-liter VG30E V6. With one complaint filed under 1992, these years total 1,431 complaints. From 1993 through 1996 the engine and its cooling system top every year's list, at 136, 88, 80 and 31 complaints.

Fuel system complaints are the next theme: 47 on the 1994, 69 on the 1995 and the top area on the 1997 (26). Three recalls dealt with fuel hoses:

  • 00V419 replaced cracked fuel tank vent hoses on 1993-1998 minivans. If the tank was overfilled, fuel could sit in the cracked hose. The campaign counted 394,000 vehicles, which may include other minivans.
  • 92V172 replaced fuel filler hoses on 1993 vans that may have been cut by a utility knife when the shipping box was opened.
  • 96V203 replaced four rubber fuel connector hoses on 1997 vans that could crack or split.

The 1993 had other first-year fixes too. Recall 95V222 added an intake screen because leaves could get into the heater and air conditioning plenum, which fits the 52 visibility complaints on that year. Recalls 92V132 and 92V133 replaced brake master cylinders and tightened automatic seat belt track bolts. In 1994, recall 94V142 replaced windshields on 17 vans that were marked "PROTOTYPE."

On the 1995, seat belts drew 41 complaints, and that year records 3 deaths and 26 crashes. Later recalls fixed rear lamp sockets (96V253, 1994-1995), power windows that could still close after the key was off and the passenger door was open (98V012, 1996), and GNB batteries whose negative post could leak acid (97V184, 1997-1998).

1999-2002: new van, cruise control complaints

For 1999 the Villager was redesigned, with Nissan's 3.3-liter VG33E SOHC V6 and a Jatco RE4F04A 4-speed automatic. Wikipedia lists three trims, Villager, Villager Sport and Villager Estate, after the Nautica edition was dropped. Wikipedia also says this generation got an oval waterfall grille and a red trim panel between the taillamps, unlike the Quest.

These four years total 294 complaints. Cruise control leads the 1999 (76) and 2000 (37). The 1999 has four recall campaigns: a second-row captain's chair latch (99V056), fuel tank straps that could break at the spot welds (99V205), tail light sockets (99V347) and steering gear mounting bolts that may not have been tightened (00V292, which also covers 2000 vans).

Villager complaints and recalls by year

Recall campaigns are counted per model year. Some Villager recalls span two or more years, which pushes that column's total past 17.

Fix it or sell it?

Find what a running Villager of your year goes for, and compare the estimate. Then:

  1. Running hot on a 1993-1996? That's where the engine complaints pile up. Read head gasket or overheating before deciding.
  2. Fuel smell? Check whether the 00V419 vent hose recall was done on your VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup. Don't keep driving a van that smells of fuel.
  3. Cruise control acting up on a 1999-2000? It's the leading complaint for both years. If the van has other problems too, it may be time to sell.
  4. Just old? Our old or high mileage guide covers when age settles it.

Selling a Villager whole

  1. Note the VIN, mileage and what's wrong.
  2. Get an offer online or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Tell us where the Villager sits and if it can roll. A van stuck deep in a long driveway works for us when we hear about it first.
  4. Leave every seat in and sell the whole car as it sits. If the rear bench or captain's chairs are already out, tell us; missing parts change the offer.
  5. At Villager pickup, hand over the title and let the driver see your ID. No title? Start with selling with no title. For plates and insurance, see after you sell.

Questions people ask

Which Villager years have the most NHTSA complaints?
The 1993, with 414 in the October 10, 2026 count. The 1995 (367), 1994 (253), 1996 (188) and 1999 (185) come after it. Later vans have been on the road fewer years, which keeps their counts lower.
Is the Villager the same van as the Nissan Quest?
Yes, underneath. Wikipedia says Ford and Nissan developed it together, and Nissan sold it as the Quest. Both generations used Nissan V6 engines, the 3.0-liter VG30E and then the 3.3-liter VG33E.
Will you take a Villager that won't start?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, minivans included, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Say where the Villager sits and if its wheels still turn.
