Selling a worn-out Mercury Mountaineer

Every one of the 300 tire complaints owners filed with NHTSA about the Mercury Mountaineer is on a 1996 to 2001 model year. No later Mountaineer has a single one. That matches the Firestone story Wikipedia tells: in May 2000, NHTSA contacted Ford and Firestone about the high rate of tire failures on first-generation Mountaineers and Explorers fitted with Firestone tires.

Whatever ended your Mountaineer, you can sell it as it sits. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, SUVs included, with free pickup anywhere in the US.

We took these Mountaineer numbers from NHTSA on October 10, 2026. They reflect owner reports, not a reliability score for the SUV. Later Mountaineers have had fewer years in service to pile them up.

Three generations, three complaint patterns

1997-2001: tires and cruise control

Wikipedia lists the 4.0-liter Cologne V6 for the first Mountaineer, with a 4-speed automatic on V8 models, all built in Louisville alongside the Explorer. Ford's own investigation, Wikipedia says, found that the 15-inch Firestone ATX, ATX II and Wilderness AT had very high failure rates, especially tires made at Firestone's Decatur, Illinois plant.

These years (plus three complaints filed under 1996) total 863 complaints. Tires lead the 1997 (137), 1998 (91) and 1999 (48). Cruise control is next: 54 complaints on the 1997, 34 on the 1998, and it tops the 2000 with 24. The 1998 also has 23 fire reports among 236 complaints.

The recalls follow the cruise control complaints closely:

  • 99V062 replaced cruise control cables on 1998-1999 Explorers and Mountaineers.
  • 00V422 replaced original throttle bodies on 1997-1998 trucks with the 4.0 SOHC engine.
  • 03V280 checked and replaced flared speed control cables on 1999-2001 4.0 SOHC trucks.
  • 07V336 and 09V399 added a fused harness to the speed control deactivation switch, which could leak, overheat, smoke or burn. Those two campaigns ran to 3,600,000 and 4,500,000 vehicles because they covered pickups, vans and other Ford SUVs too.

Other first-generation recalls: 98V060 warned owners not to clamp a jump-start ground to the fuel line bracket on 4.0 SOHC engines. 99V164 replaced secondary hood latches that could corrode open. 00V402 replaced front sway bar links on the 1997. 03V281 fixed a driver seat recliner bolt that could fracture on 1998-2001 trucks.

2002-2005: power train and structure

The second generation got a 5-speed automatic. It drew 816 complaints in four model years. The 2002 is the busiest Mountaineer year with 372 complaints and 38 injuries reported. Power train leads it with 125.

Across 2002-2005, owners filed 232 power train complaints and 201 structure complaints, and structure tops the 2003, 2004 and 2005. Recalls are thin here. NHTSA lists none for 2003, 2004 or 2005. The 2002 has two: 01V171, for right-side tires that may have been cut during assembly, and the 09V399 speed control switch campaign.

2006-2010: engine, then seats

Wikipedia lists the U251 Mountaineer on Ford's U2 platform with a 5-speed 5R55S automatic and Roll Stability Control. These five years total 313 complaints. The 2006 leans to the engine and engine cooling (42) and power train (32). The 2007 and 2008 lean to seats (18 and 41). Recall 10V161 replaced manual seat recliners on 2010 trucks, in a 33,256-vehicle campaign shared with the Explorer, Explorer Sport Trac, Fusion and Milan.

Wikipedia notes that the Mountaineer was Mercury's third-best seller in 2000 and its slowest seller ten years later. The last one came off the Louisville line on October 1, 2010.

Fix it or sell it?

Compare the quote with what a running Mountaineer of that year brings. Some Mountaineer-specific checks:

  1. Slipping or no gears on a 2002-2005: power train complaints cluster here. Read bad transmission before paying for a rebuild.
  2. Rust underneath: structure complaints top three straight years. If it won't pass inspection, see failed inspection or rust.
  3. Cruise control or throttle trouble on a 1997-2002: several recalls cover these parts. Check your VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup.
  4. Old tires on a first-generation truck: replace them before driving it anywhere, or don't drive it at all.

If the repair costs more than the truck, repairs that cost more than it's worth walks through it.

Mountaineer complaints by model year

Each Mountaineer year lists its own recalls, and plenty of recalls reach over several years, so the column totals more than 19.

Selling it whole

  1. Note the VIN, mileage, 2WD, 4WD or AWD, and what's wrong.
  2. Get an offer online or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Describe where it sits. A Mountaineer stuck in 4WD, sitting on flats or with a locked transmission still goes on the truck, as long as the driver hears about it first. Our junk truck or SUV guide covers the details.
  4. Sell the whole truck as it sits, wheels, battery and converter still attached. If parts are already off your Mountaineer, name them, since that changes the offer.
  5. On pickup day, the title goes to the driver after a quick ID check. No title? Read selling with no title. Plates and insurance afterward: after you sell.

Other Mercurys we cover: the Mariner, Villager and Grand Marquis.

Questions people ask

Which Mountaineer years have the most NHTSA complaints?
The 2002 heads the list at 372 in the October 10, 2026 count, with the 1997 (328), 1998 (236), 2004 (210), 2003 (152) and 1999 (151) behind it. The third-generation trucks are younger, which keeps their totals down.
Was the Mountaineer part of the Firestone tire problem?
Yes. Wikipedia says NHTSA contacted Ford and Firestone in May 2000 about the high rate of tire failures on first-generation Mountaineers, Explorers and Mazda Navajos fitted with Firestone tires. Ford found several 15-inch Firestone models, the ATX, ATX II and Wilderness AT, had very high failure rates. All 300 Mountaineer tire complaints in NHTSA's file are on 1996-2001 models.
Will you buy a four-wheel-drive Mountaineer that won't move?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars and SUVs, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Say whether it rolls in Neutral and whether all four tires hold air.
How is a Mountaineer different from an Explorer?
It's built on the Explorer, at the same Louisville plant. Wikipedia says Lincoln-Mercury gave the Mountaineer upgraded interior trim and features carried over from the Aviator, including an optional DVD-based map and directions system with voice control.
