Selling a dead or junk car in Shakopee

We couldn't find Shakopee's city code online, so this page goes by Minnesota law, which covers every city in the state. Under it, a dead car left illegally on public property can become "abandoned" after 48 hours, or after only 4 hours where posted. Shakopee could have stricter rules of its own on top. Either way, we buy whole non-running and junk cars. You sell the whole car as it sits, and pickup is free anywhere in the US.

Junk, abandoned, or neither in Shakopee

Statute 168B.011 draws two lines. A Shakopee car counts as a junk vehicle only if it meets all of these: "three years old or older," "extensively damaged" (for example, wheels, motor, drive train or transmission gone), "apparently inoperable," lacking a "valid current registration plate," and worth "only the scrap value." An abandoned car is one that doesn't run or lacks key parts and was left illegally more than 48 hours (4 where signs say so) on government land, or on private land without the owner's okay.

An enclosed garage or storage building keeps a car out of the abandoned group. So does classic or pioneer status.

If police impound a Shakopee car

Section 168B.04 lets local officers and city or county officials seize any abandoned or junk vehicle. The state clocks then start:

  1. Five days to notify the registered owner and lienholders, skipping weekends and holidays. Mail is the usual route; a newspaper notice is used if the owner is unknown.
  2. Once fifteen days pass from that Shakopee notice, it can be sold or scrapped. A junk car with a plate still valid is no exception.
  3. A Shakopee owner who wants the car back covers the tow and storage bill within 15 or 45 days of the notice, based on the type of vehicle.

Title offices our check turned up

Shakopee sits in Scott County, but the two offices in our check are elsewhere. Hennepin County operates a service center at 300 S. Sixth Street, Suite A-025, in Minneapolis, reached at 612-348-8240. It is about 17 miles to the northeast of mid-Shakopee, measured as the crow flies. Olmsted's license office, 151 Fourth Street SE in Rochester (507-923-2020), is about 72 miles southeast. Any deputy registrar can also process a transfer.

Scrap and parts buyers in Minnesota

The state treats scrap sales with extra care. Holding the Shakopee title? Bring your ID and any lien releases when you turn it in from Shakopee, plus a statement signed "under penalty of perjury" that the car carries no lien and isn't stolen. With no title, two narrow paths exist:

  • Seven-day hold. With your written OK, a licensed used vehicle parts dealer can buy the Shakopee car to take apart. The Shakopee hold doesn't count weekends or holidays.
  • Old and unregistered. A Shakopee dealer may buy a car 10 or more model years old for scrap when you hand over printed DVS proof it sat unregistered past seven years.

No-title scrap sales pay out only by check or electronic transfer, to whoever showed ID. See junkyard or scrap yard for which buyer does what.

Your part of the Minnesota title

Sign and handprint the seller section, then list price, date, and the damage and odometer disclosures. Shakopee sellers will not find a notary in the DVS seller steps. Plates stay put for the new owner. Send in the Notice of Sale, or report online, before ten days pass. The statute then says you are "not liable as owner for damages from operation of the vehicle after delivery."

Getting an offer

Reach us online or at (877) 421-6008. Shakopee owners can get an offer through the form. Our truck picks up in downtown Shakopee, from a garage out toward Prior Lake, or at a repair shop that couldn't fix it. Crash damage has its own page, wrecked or totaled, and the Minnesota page covers the state.

Questions people ask

When does Minnesota law call a Shakopee car junk?
In Shakopee it has to fit every part of 168B.011: "three years old or older," heavily damaged, looks like it can't run, carries no valid current plate, and has only scrap worth. Miss one, and it is not a junk vehicle under that statute.
Does Shakopee have its own junk-car ordinance?
We could not find Shakopee's city code online, so this page follows Minnesota state law. Shakopee might add its own parking or storage limits. Check with Shakopee before relying only on the statute.
Can a Shakopee car be scrapped with no title?
In two cases. A licensed used parts dealer can take it for dismantling if you sign a seven-day hold agreement and show ID. When DVS printouts show a car of 10 model years or more has gone unregistered for over seven years, a dealer may buy it for scrap. Either way, you get paid by check or electronic transfer.
