Selling a non-running or junk Mitsubishi Sigma

The Mitsubishi Sigma appears in US fuel economy data for only two model years, 1989 and 1990. NHTSA's complaint file holds five owner complaints for it in all, and one recall. So the public record says very little about what goes wrong on a Sigma, and your own car's condition decides what it is worth.

A name Mitsubishi used for twenty years

Wikipedia says Mitsubishi used the Sigma name from 1976 to 1996, on several different cars based on the Galant and the Diamante. In Japan, the Galant sedan wore a "Σ" badge from 1976 to 1987. That is why a search for Sigma parts or history turns up cars that look nothing like yours. When you describe your car to a buyer, give the model year and the VIN, not just the name.

The photo above is one of those other Sigmas. The car EPA lists for the US is a compact car with a gasoline engine.

What the 1988-1990 record shows

NHTSA files two complaints under 1988, a year before the EPA listing starts, one under 1989 and two under 1990. Seat belts come up twice. Three other categories get one complaint apiece: steering, power train, and NHTSA's engine-and-cooling group. None of the five reports a crash, fire, injury or tow.

The single recall lines up with the seat belt complaints. Campaign 95V103004 was reported on May 24, 1995 for 1988-1990 model years. According to the notice, the red plastic button on each front buckle, stamped "PRESS," may crack apart. Bits of it can drop inside the mechanism and stop the belt from latching or letting go. Owners were asked to test both front belts and inspect each red button for damage. The campaign's total, 658,000 vehicles, may span other models besides the Sigma, so don't read it as a Sigma figure.

Complaints and recalls by model year

Each figure is one Sigma owner's complaint on file with NHTSA when the data was downloaded on October 10, 2026. A younger model year would normally show fewer simply because it has spent less time on the road. Every Sigma here dates from 1988-1990, so the counts stay tiny regardless.

Fix it or sell it?

Five complaints can't tell you what is wrong with your Sigma. Get the real problem found first. Then weigh that repair bill against the price a working 1989 or 1990 Sigma fetches.

  • Seat belts first. If the front buckles still have the original red buttons, check them, since that is the only recall on record. Type your Sigma's VIN into NHTSA's recall search.
  • Parked for years? Tires, brakes and fuel can all go bad on a car that sits. Our guide to a car sitting for years covers what to check.
  • Lots of miles and a big quote? See old or high mileage for how to weigh it.

Selling your Sigma whole

  1. Find the VIN, the title and the mileage, and note what doesn't work.
  2. Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Describe the spot it's in (driveway, garage, back lot) and whether the wheels still roll. That tells the driver which truck to bring.
  4. Leave everything on it. If parts are already gone, say so.
  5. Sign over the title, and pass along any keys that survived. After you sell explains plates and insurance by state. No title? Start with selling with no title.

Questions people ask

Does the Mitsubishi Sigma have any recalls?
One. Campaign 95V103004, reported May 24, 1995, covers 1988-1990 model years. Its notice says the red front-buckle buttons, the ones labeled PRESS, may snap, leaving fragments inside that keep the buckle from latching right. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
Why does NHTSA list a 1988 Sigma when EPA data starts in 1989?
The two sources file the car differently. NHTSA's complaint file holds two complaints under 1988, and the buckle recall lists 1988 too, while EPA fuel economy data has the Sigma for 1989 and 1990 only. Go by the model year on your title and VIN.
Will you buy a Sigma that hasn't run in years?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Mention roughly where it's parked and whether its wheels spin freely; you sell the whole car as it sits.
