Selling a junk or non-running Mitsubishi Diamante

Nearly two in five owner complaints about the Mitsubishi Diamante sit in one NHTSA category: visibility. NHTSA's count, taken October 10, 2026, puts 195 of the Diamante's 505 complaints there, 192 of them on 1998-2003 cars. The 2002 has the most complaints of any year, 123, and 65 of them are visibility.

A Diamante that quit running, or needs more work than it's worth, is one you can sell the whole car as it sits. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US.

Two generations, two complaint patterns

Wikipedia dates the first generation to 1990-1995 and the second to 1995-2005. Both were built in Nagoya, Japan. In the US, EPA data lists the Diamante for 1992-2005 as a sedan and a wagon.

The 1995 model year sits on the line between the two; it is counted with the first here.

1992-1995: brake hoses and air bags

Two recalls, 96V143001 and 96V143002, list the 1992-1994 Diamante. Every Diamante recall is about a front brake hose near the wheel that can crack and leak brake fluid with the wheel turned fully and the suspension at full extension. Dealers replace both front hoses. The campaigns count 93,000 and 10,000 vehicles, and those totals include other models; the 3000GT is on the same campaigns. Owners filed 19 complaints under hydraulic brakes on the 1992-1994 cars.

Air bags lead the 1993 file with 10 of 29 complaints, and 10 of that year's complaints report a crash. Recall 93V044000 adds one more for the 1993: the factory left a lower bolt on a rear outer seat belt too loose. That campaign covered 300 vehicles.

1997-2004: the visibility years

From 1998 through 2003, visibility tops the complaint list every year. On the 2001 it is 55 of 78 complaints. Engine and engine cooling is the second pattern, with 51 complaints across 2001-2003. The 2002's complaints report 11 injuries and 2 deaths.

Recalls in this stretch:

  • 00V132000 (1999-2000): the screw that holds the parking brake shoe retaining clip can turn brittle and break. Campaign: 9,250 vehicles.
  • 02V100001 (2002): the main under-hood wiring harness may not clear the exhaust heat shield. Dealers inspect it and tie it back. Campaign: 3,885 vehicles.
  • 04V067000 (2000-2003): the owner's manual left out step-by-step headrest instructions for child seat anchorage. The 134,000-vehicle campaign also covers SUVs.
  • 04V428000 (1998-2004): bilingual air bag warning labels, handled by Mitsubishi Caribbean by mail. The 100,432 count covers other passenger cars too.

Wikipedia says the US Galant grew in size and its GTS trim replaced the Diamante.

Complaints and recalls by model year

We tallied NHTSA's Diamante complaints on October 10, 2026. Recalls show under each year a campaign names, and many campaigns name more than one Diamante year. The later a model year, the less time owners have had to file, which is part of why the 2004 shows only 3.

Repair it or let it go?

First, run your Diamante's VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup. On a 1992-1994 car, the brake hose campaigns are the ones to check first.

Then weigh the quote against what a running Diamante of the same year sells for. On a 2001-2003 car with an engine complaint, see blown engine for how to judge it. If the trouble is wiring near the exhaust on a 2002, the electrical problems guide covers the fix-or-sell call. For a car this old, old or high mileage explains why age alone can tip the math.

Selling your Diamante whole

  1. Before you reach out about the Diamante, jot down its VIN, its mileage, the trouble, and if the wheels turn.
  2. Ask for an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Tell us where the Diamante is parked, in a driveway, back lot, garage or shop. We offer free pickup anywhere in the US. Mention flat tires or a locked steering wheel so the right truck comes.
  4. Keep the Diamante in one piece. If parts came off already, say which, because that shifts the offer.
  5. At pickup, have the title and photo ID ready. Plate rules differ by state; see after you sell.

Questions people ask

Which Diamante model years have the most NHTSA complaints?
The 2002 tops the list at 123 in NHTSA's October 10, 2026 count. Next are the 2001 (78), the 2003 (56) and the 2000 (51). The 2004 Diamante has only 3. As the final model year, it spent fewer years in owners' hands.
Does the brake hose recall cover my Diamante?
Recalls 96V143001 and 96V143002 list 1992-1994 Diamantes. When the wheel is cranked fully and the suspension hangs all the way down, a front brake hose may split and drip fluid. To check whether your Diamante ever got that fix, look up its VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
Will you buy a Diamante that won't start or move?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Tell us it doesn't run, whether it rolls, and where it's parked.
What replaced the Diamante in the US?
Wikipedia says the US Galant grew in size and the Diamante was replaced by the Galant's upper-end GTS trim. Production of the Diamante ended in 2005.
