Selling an old Mitsubishi Van or Wagon

Six people reported injuries in NHTSA complaints about the Mitsubishi Van, and all six are on the 1988 model year. That same year holds both of the van's fire reports. The rest of the file is mostly about seat belts.

Where the US van fits in Mitsubishi's range

The EPA lists this model for 1987 through 1990, as both a Van and a Wagon. Wikipedia covers it as part of a range of Mitsubishi vans and pickups going back to 1968. The third generation began production in 1986 at the Nagoya plant in Japan, with a mid-mounted engine, rear- or four-wheel drive and a 4-speed automatic. Wikipedia lists three gasoline fours for that generation: 1,439 cc (4G33), 1,597 cc (4G32) and 1,795 cc (4G62).

Hyundai also produced the third generation at Ulsan, from 1986 to 2004, and Wikipedia names the Hyundai Starex as its Korean successor.

What owners reported, year by year

1987-1988: most of the file

The first two years hold 11 of the 16 complaints. On the 1987, 4 of 5 are about seat belts, and the fifth is about a seat. The 1988 is the year with harm reported: 1 crash, 2 fires and 6 injuries across its 6 complaints. Its components include seat belts, the gasoline fuel system and the electrical system.

1989-1991: a few belt complaints

The last years add 5 complaints, and 4 of them are seat belts. One complaint is filed against a 1991, a year after the EPA data ends.

The buckle recall

Campaign 95V103004, reported May 24, 1995, lists 1987-1990 vans. The trouble was the front belt latch: its red release button, the one printed "PRESS," was prone to cracking, and fragments could end up inside the mechanism. The fix NHTSA lists is an owner inspection of both front latches and their red buttons.

Its 658,000-vehicle total is campaign-wide. The Mighty Max and the Cordia share the campaign, so don't read it as a van count.

Keep it or sell it?

A van this age lives or dies on rust, the engine and how hard parts are to find for a US-market model sold for four years. Have a mechanic write down what it needs, with a number on it. Set that beside the asking prices of any running Mitsubishi Vans you can find for sale. A van that has sat outside for years often needs brakes, tires and fuel work just to move; see sitting for years for what usually goes wrong. The buckle recall is worth a look on NHTSA's site either way.

Selling the van whole

  1. Locate the title. No title? See selling with no title.
  2. Get an offer online or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Explain how a tow truck gets to it, and note a tight driveway, a gate or soft ground.
  4. Leave it whole, seats and wheels included. Missing parts change the offer.

Questions people ask

What is the Mitsubishi Van's most common complaint?
Seat belts. Ten of its 16 NHTSA complaints, as the data stood on October 10, 2026, are about them, and the 1987 alone has 4.
Does the seat belt recall cover my Mitsubishi Van?
Campaign 95V103004 lists 1987-1990 Mitsubishi Vans. It deals with the front belts' red release buttons cracking apart inside the latch. Typing the van's VIN into NHTSA's recall search will confirm it.
Will you buy a Mitsubishi Van that hasn't moved in years?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, vans included. You sell the whole car as it sits, with free pickup anywhere in the US. If it's boxed in behind a fence or another vehicle, mention that up front.
