Selling a junk car in Rochester, New Hampshire

A dead car towed in Rochester and worth under $1,000 can be gone from the storage lot in 15 days. A storage company can get rid of a car worth that little, or one only good for salvage, once it has sent the owner at least 10 days of verified-mail notice under state law. A car parked at a lot already has that clock ticking.

How long a storage lot holds a car

RSA chapter 262 sets three clocks, and the car's age and value decide which one applies:

  • 15 days: value under $1,000, or unusable and only fit for salvage. At least 10 days' notice of the sale by verified mail.
  • 20 days: more than 5 model years old and not claimed. The storage company may dispose of it after giving notice, with no newspaper publication required.
  • 30 days: 5 model years old or less and not claimed, then disposal after notice.

Most junk cars fall in the first two groups. Read any letter from a lot the day it arrives. Our towed or impounded guide covers getting a car released.

Rochester's rules for a dead car at home

We found no Rochester city code online, so state law shapes this section. Local rules about unregistered or broken-down cars kept on private land could still apply. Check with the city before you lean on anything here.

Handing over the title

Under RSA 261:14, the New Hampshire title law, the owner signs an assignment and warranty of title over to the new owner at delivery. Really it all happens on the title's back side. The Rochester seller writes down the buyer, their address and the mileage, then both people sign. The title then belongs with the buyer.

Two cases differ. New Hampshire never titled cars built before model year 2000, so a Rochester seller of one uses the TDMV 22A bill of sale. If an insurer called the car a total loss, it is the insurer who files for a salvage certificate of title, paying $10, within 20 days of settling the claim. There is no percentage test in the statute; salvage simply follows the total-loss call. See salvage title.

Plates stay in Rochester with you

Selling the car ends its registration. Remove the plates, and hold on to the old registration. In Rochester, plates can move to a similar vehicle you register with the clerk, for the rest of the period. If the new fee is equal or lower, nothing extra is owed. The DMV adds that once the plates move, the old car is not legally registered and may not be driven.

Getting an offer

Use the form or call (877) 421-6008. Tell us if your Rochester car is at home or in a storage lot. If it is at a lot, have the lot's name ready. The truck can meet the car downtown, at a body shop or at the end of a long rural driveway.

Questions people ask

My car was towed in Rochester. How long before the lot can get rid of it?
Under RSA chapter 262, a storage company holding a car worth under $1,000, or so damaged it is only fit for salvage, may dispose of it in 15 days after at least 10 days of verified-mail notice. An unclaimed car more than 5 model years old can go after 20 days with notice, and a newer one after 30.
Does Rochester have its own junk-car rule?
Rochester's code did not show up online for us, so state law fills in here. Local rules might differ, so ask City Hall before you count on any deadline below.
Who gets the plates when I sell a dead car in Rochester?
You do. The registration expires on the sale, and you keep the expired registration to claim transfer credit when the plates go on your next vehicle.
