Selling a junk vehicle in Lawton
In Lawton, a car can become a junk vehicle without breaking down at all. The city's definition counts any vehicle "bearing a state registration that is more than three (3) months out of date," and it sets a value test too: under $1,000 by the National Automobile Dealers Association guide. Once a car fits, it has 72 hours on any lot in the city. We buy whole non-running and junk cars from Lawton. You sell the whole car as it sits, with free pickup anywhere in the US.

The 72-hour rule
Section 15-5-502 makes it "unlawful and an offense for any person to park, store, leave or permit the parking, storing or leaving of any junk vehicle, as defined in this chapter, whether attended or not, upon any public or private property within the city for a period of time in excess of seventy-two (72) consecutive hours."
It declares the presence of a junk vehicle "or parts thereof" a public nuisance. The main way out is a building: "Any vehicle totally enclosed within a building on private property" is exempt. A tarp in the driveway is not a building.
An earlier heading limited the rule to private property. The current one covers public land too.
How Lawton defines a junk vehicle
Section 15-1-101 lists several ways a vehicle can qualify. Any one is enough. A junk vehicle is one that is:
- "wrecked, dismantled, partially dismantled, inoperative, deteriorated, decayed"
- lacking "parts or maintenance necessary for operation"
- abandoned
- "bearing no state registration or bearing a state registration that is more than three (3) months out of date"
- "having a value less than one thousand dollars ($1,000.00)" under the NADA guide
The last two catch cars that still run. A commuter car with a lapsed tag, or an old sedan the guide values under the line, can qualify while it sits in the driveway in working order. That $1,000 line is the code's test for junk status. It says nothing about what a buyer pays.
The same section's definition of "store or storage" sets the 72-hour mark too: placing a vehicle "on private property in excess of seventy-two (72) hours."
The antique exception is narrow
Lawton's antique or classic vehicle is "twenty-five (25) years of age or older," valued "in excess of two thousand five hundred dollars ($2,500.00)" by the NADA guide average retail price, and "in operable condition including but not limited to having a current registration."
All three conditions apply at once. Age alone never makes a car an antique here. Without a current tag and a working engine, it misses the definition.
Driveways and neighborhood parking
Section 15-5-503 covers where vehicles can sit in one- and two-family neighborhoods. Vehicles up to 8½ feet wide, 24 feet long and 11 feet high can be parked in front, side and rear yards only "on a driveway that is constructed of a solid sealed surface."
Towing from streets and private lots
Under Section 23-21-2104, police can move a car stalled across traffic if its driver is injured or otherwise unable to deal with it, or one left an hour beyond its posted parking time. That section has its own definition of junk vehicle, which includes one with no "properly affixed current license plate or registration" or one that is "wrecked, dismantled, partially, dismantled, inoperative or abandoned." A towed car is released only after "any reasonable costs of or charges for impounding and storage, shall have been paid."
Section 23-6-610 lets a property owner have a car parked on their land without consent removed and impounded. The vehicle owner pays "removal, storage and impounding fees."
The Comanche County title office we checked
Comanche County has an office at 315 SW 5th Street, phone 580-355-5763, about 2 miles southeast of central Lawton measured directly. The county may have more offices. Service Oklahoma counters and its licensed tag agencies are another route.
On a paper title, the seller signs the assignment and warranty of title, has a notary witness the oath, and passes the title over at delivery. On July 1, 2025, Oklahoma switched to electronic titles. If yours is one, the buyer gets a notarized Form 718 in its place.
Plates, pre-registration and old fees
The plate comes off and stays in your name. Oklahoma plates are not transferable between owners. If your next vehicle shares the registration class, the plate can ride on it until the registration runs out. Either the buyer or the seller has two business days to file the pre-registration.
A tag more than three months out of date is common on a junk car, and Oklahoma charges for it. The state expects a yearly registration even for a car that never leaves the yard. Renew late and it costs $1.00 a day, starting after the last day of the month after expiration, up to $100. See tickets or registration hold if back fees are holding up a sale.
Getting an offer
Use the form or phone (877) 421-6008. Let us know the brand and year, the mileage if you know it, if it can be driven, and where things are with the title. If military orders are coming, military deployment covers selling before you leave. Pickup can be from a sealed-surface driveway, a curb, or a repair shop in town. Questions people ask
- How long can a junk vehicle stay on my Lawton property?
- Section 15-5-502 caps it at 72 consecutive hours, whether the lot is public or private. A vehicle totally enclosed within a building on private property is exempt.
- My car runs but the tag expired four months ago. Is it a junk vehicle?
- It can be. Under Section 15-1-101, a vehicle is junk if it has no state registration at all, or if its registration lapsed more than three months ago.
- Is an old car worth more than $2,500 treated differently?
- Lawton defines an antique or classic vehicle as one 25 years or older, valued over $2,500 by the NADA guide average retail price, and in operable condition with current registration. A car that does not meet all of that is not an antique under the code.
- Where do I handle a title in Comanche County?
- One we checked: 315 SW 5th Street, phone 580-355-5763, roughly 2 miles southeast of downtown Lawton as the crow flies. Licensed tag agencies handle title work too.
