Selling an old Oldsmobile Calais
Engine and engine cooling is named in 27 of the 64 complaints owners filed with NHTSA about the Calais, more than five times the next component. And half of the car's eight recalls are about fuel hoses.

Wikipedia says Lansing, Michigan, built the front-drive Calais compact from 1984 to 1991 on GM's N-body, sharing it with the Buick Somerset. It followed the Omega and gave way to the Achieva. The Tech IV four was standard, and a 3.0-liter V6, automatic only, was the option; its engine list also includes the 2.3-liter Quad 4 and the 3.3-liter 3300 V6. If yours is done, you can sell the whole car as it sits.
Problems by year group
1985-1987
These years have 15 complaints and five recalls. The 1985 Calais got four recalls: a windshield that might come loose in a crash test (85V047, 20 vehicles), a throttle return spring that could snap and keep the engine speed high (86V030, 135,623), a secondary hood latch that was misaligned or sticking (86V121, 206,651, also 1986) and small cracks in the body pillar near the door striker bolt (87V124, 261,171, also 1986). On the 1987, the fuel hoses could rub against the shift lever of the 5-speed manual (88V032, 22,300).
1988-1990
These years have 49 complaints, and engine and engine cooling leads each one: 7, 8 and 3. The front fuel feed hose on 1988-1989 cars could crack or separate at the engine end and leak fuel under the hood. It was recalled twice, as 90V042 (61,765 vehicles) and 92V150 (108,836). On the 1990, fuel hose connections at the body rail could loosen (90V119, 3,202).
These Calais recall vehicle numbers are for each full campaign and can include other GM models. NHTSA has no Calais complaints on file for 1991.
Complaints by model year
Calais owners sent these to NHTSA; our tally of its file is dated October 10, 2026. They are owner reports rather than a reliability rating, and the 1990 has had five fewer years than the 1985 to gather them.
| Year | Complaints | Fires | Recalls | Most named |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1985 | 3 | 0 | 4 | Latches, steering, engine (1 each) |
| 1986 | 7 | 1 | 2 | Engine 3, steering 1, seat belts 1 |
| 1987 | 5 | 2 | 1 | Engine 5 |
| 1988 | 18 | 1 | 2 | Engine 7, electrical 3, seat belts 2 |
| 1989 | 19 | 2 | 2 | Engine 8, seats 3, speed control 1 |
| 1990 | 12 | 0 | 1 | Engine 3, structure 2, speed control 2 |
Altogether: 8 crashes, 6 fires, 7 people injured and no deaths.
Fix it or sell it whole
A Calais that runs hot or won't start is now 35 years old or more. Get the shop's price in writing and check it against what a running Calais goes for. Our head gasket and overheating guide shows how to judge that price. If it's not worth it:
