Selling an Oldsmobile Achieva that won't run

Three different Achieva recalls deal with the same thing: a driver holding the key in Start when the engine won't catch. NHTSA's notices say that sends high current through the ignition switch, enough to heat it. GM filed one for the 1994-1995 cars (00V287), one for the 1996-1997 cars (02V070) and one for the 1998 (04V036), and each fix was a relay kit. Separately, the electrical system is the component owners named most in complaints filed with NHTSA, in 92 of 413.

The Achieva took over from the Cutlass Calais after 1991 and ended after the 1998 model year, Wikipedia says. The Achieva was a front-drive compact made in Lansing, Michigan, sharing the N platform with the Buick Skylark, and the Alero took its place. If yours no longer starts or isn't worth the next repair, you can sell the whole car as it sits.

Achieva complaints and recalls, year by year

Owners sent these complaints to NHTSA; the totals are from our October 10, 2026 count of its file. Treat them as reports, not a reliability grade, and keep in mind the 1998 has had a bit less time to gather them than the 1992. Recall counts are the campaigns listed for each year; one campaign can span several years.

Across all seven years: 38 crashes, 23 fires, 43 people injured and one death. In these Achieva counts, "Engine" is NHTSA's engine and engine cooling group, and "brakes" is hydraulic service brakes.

Known problems by engine era

1992-1993: the 3300 V6 years

These two years hold 91 complaints. Per Wikipedia, the Achieva's first V6 was Buick's 3.3-liter "3300." For the 1992 Achieva, engine and engine cooling tops the list at 14 of 53 complaints.

The one recall for this stretch, 93V153, is a small campaign: 1,103 vehicles in all, for 1993 cars whose neutral start safety switch may have cracked when it was installed. Dealers replaced the switch and checked the manual switch on the automatic transaxle.

1994-1998: the 3100 V6, and the ignition switch recalls

These five years hold 322 complaints. For 1994, Wikipedia says, a driver-side air bag became standard and Chevrolet's 3.1-liter "3100" V6 replaced the 3300. Steering leads the 1994 complaints with 12 of 62. From 1995 on, the electrical system leads every year.

The 1994 also has a fuel tank recall. Campaign 94V122 says welds in the rear compartment pan were not strong enough to meet the federal rule on fuel tank leakage in a rear impact. Dealers added rivets next to the welds. It covered 1,681 vehicles.

The 1996 has four recalls, more than any other Achieva year:

  • 96V211: the passenger air bag fabric could snag on a reinforcement inside the instrument panel and lift the panel pad as it deployed. 48,689 vehicles.
  • 96V250: the four-way flashers might not flash. 270,014 vehicles.
  • 98V027: interior lamps could come on by themselves while driving. 249,420 vehicles.
  • 02V070: the ignition switch heat recall, shared with the 1997.

The 1997 adds 97V059: the protective cover over the underhood fuse center was left off, leaving the positive terminal bolt where it could touch the negative battery cable. That one covered 3,464 vehicles.

The three ignition switch campaigns counted 699,617 (00V287), 1,589,948 (02V070) and 1,415,231 (04V036) vehicles. Those totals may include other GM cars, so they are not Achieva counts. The same goes for every vehicle count on this page: each one covers the whole campaign.

How to sell a dead Achieva

  1. Note the VIN and odometer reading, plus what the Achieva does or doesn't do when you turn the key.
  2. Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Tell us where it sits: driveway, street, garage or a repair lot. Free pickup anywhere in the US, and the driver brings what's needed if it won't roll.
  4. Leave the Achieva together. Sell the whole car as it sits; parts already pulled affect the offer, so tell us what's gone.
  5. Hand over the signed title and keys at pickup. No title? See selling with no title.

Worth fixing first?

Per Wikipedia, the Achieva came with four engines, the 2.3-liter L40 four, the 2.3-liter twin-cam four, the 2.4-liter twin-cam four and the 3.1-liter V6, each with a 3-speed 3T40 automatic. Whatever is under the hood, the newest Achieva is now 28 years old.

  • Won't crank? On a 1994-1998 Achieva, find out if the ignition relay recall was done before blaming the engine. Our electrical problems guide covers the usual suspects.
  • Overheating or knocking? Engine and cooling complaints show up on every year. See blown engine.
  • Quote higher than the car is worth running? That is when selling it as it sits makes sense. Repairs cost more than it is worth walks through the comparison.

Questions people ask

Which Achieva year has the most NHTSA complaints?
The 1996. Our October 10, 2026 count found 87 owner complaints for this Achieva at NHTSA. Electrical problems come first with 20, then air bags with 15. It is also the only Achieva year with a death recorded in a complaint.
My Achieva won't crank. Could it be the ignition switch recall?
Possibly. On the Achieva, three recalls (00V287 for 1994-1995, 02V070 for 1996-1997 and 04V036 for 1998) warn that keeping the key in Start while the engine fails to catch can send high current through the ignition switch and overheat it. The fix was a relay kit. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls and have the starting circuit diagnosed before you write the engine off.
Which V6 does my Achieva have?
Wikipedia says the Buick-built 3.3-liter 3300 V6 was offered at first, and for 1994 it was replaced by Chevrolet's 3.1-liter 3100 V6. So a V6 Achieva from 1994 on has the 3100.
Will you pick up an Achieva that has to be towed?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickup is free anywhere in the US. Let us know where your Achieva is parked and if the wheels turn.
