Every Oldsmobile on the road now is a 2004 model or older. Below is what the brand was, which Oldsmobiles drew the most owner complaints at NHTSA, and an index of every model the EPA rated.

A Lansing brand that lasted 106 years

Ransom E. Olds founded the company on August 21, 1897. It was based in Lansing, Michigan, and became a division of General Motors. Wikipedia describes it at the end as GM's entry-level luxury division. The division closed on April 29, 2004.

The first car in Wikipedia's production table is the Curved Dash Model R, built from 1901 to 1903: a one-cylinder car rated at 5 horsepower. Some of the names that came later ran for decades:

  • 98: 1941 to 1996
  • 88: 1949 to 1999
  • Vista Cruiser wagon: 1964 to 1977
  • Toronado: 1966 to 1992
  • Cutlass Supreme: 1967 to 1997

Those years are Wikipedia's. The EPA's own list, which starts in 1984, can differ by a year; it shows Toronados through 1993, for example. In 1966 Oldsmobile also finished Building 70, a 200,000-square-foot administration building at 920 Townsend Avenue in Lansing. That site is now GM's Lansing Grand River Assembly plant.

Where the complaints cluster

NHTSA's database held 9,913 owner complaints about Oldsmobiles on October 10, 2026. Six models carry most of them:

ModelNHTSA complaintsYears in the EPA list
Alero1,9571999-2004
Intrigue1,1391998-2002
Bravada9621991-2004
Silhouette9501990-2004
Eighty-Eight9191984-1999
Aurora7851995-2003

Each of these is a report an Oldsmobile owner sent to the government, never a ruling that the car was defective, and the totals do not rate reliability. Bigger sellers draw more reports. A recent model year normally trails, since a young car has spent less time being driven, yet here the order runs the other way. Every model at the top of the table was still sold in the late 1990s or after. The 1980s nameplates sit near the bottom: 64 complaints for the Calais, 35 for the Toronado, 4 for the Firenza and 2 for the Omega, whose only year in the EPA list is 1984. The counts alone do not explain why.

What every Oldsmobile shares now

The brand has no new cars, and its newest models are 2004s. That makes every Oldsmobile an old car, whatever its mileage. Many of them were parked when something expensive failed, and the job of getting one sold usually starts with the title and the tow, not a repair.

The Cutlass name is the one thing that trips people up. Oldsmobile put it on several different cars. The EPA list carries a Cutlass Supreme (1984-1997), a Cutlass Ciera (1984-1996), a Calais (1985-1991) and a plain Cutlass sold only from 1997 to 1999. Check the title or the registration for the exact name before you describe the car.

How to sell an Oldsmobile that won't run

Don't strip anything off first; the battery, wheels and converter stay put. The Olds goes whole, on a truck.

  1. Read the year, the exact model name and the mileage off the title or the dash.
  2. Be plain about its state: does it crank, can it be pushed, is anything smashed or pulled off?
  3. Check that the title is in hand. For a lost one, read selling a junk car with no title. If it came from a parent or grandparent, the inherited car guide covers whose name has to be on the papers.
  4. Give the spot the truck should go to: garage, backyard, barn or curbside.

Pickup is free anywhere in the US. When it is gone, cancel the insurance and handle the plates.

Questions people ask

Do you buy Oldsmobiles even though the brand is gone?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and the badge on the hood does not change that. Sell the whole car as it sits, with free pickup anywhere in the US.
What was the last Oldsmobile?
The EPA's list ends at the 2004 model year. The Alero, Bravada and Silhouette were all still listed that year. Wikipedia gives April 29, 2004, as the day the division closed.
Which Oldsmobile has the most NHTSA complaints?
The Alero leads, at 1,957 owner complaints in NHTSA's database by October 10, 2026. The Intrigue follows at 1,139. Each one is something an owner told the agency; none of them is a defect finding.
Can I sell an Oldsmobile that has been parked for years?
Yes. On a car this age, soft tires, a flat battery and expired tags are normal. Mention that it won't start and give the address; pickup happens right where the Olds is parked.
