Selling an old Pontiac 6000

Twelve recall campaigns cover the Pontiac 6000's eight EPA model years, 1984 to 1991, against just 87 complaints owners filed with NHTSA. The biggest campaign, 95V173 for rear seat belt anchor bolts on 1989-1991 cars, counted 2,216,325 vehicles across GM, so most of that number is other models.

Three stretches of the 6000

1984-1985. Wikipedia says the 4.3-liter diesel V6 was dropped after 1985, and that for 1985 a multi-port fuel injected 2.8 V6 replaced the carbureted one. Only 6 complaints cover these two years. The notable recall is 85V034 on the 1984: fuel could leak at the throttle body injection feed pipe, and NHTSA warned of an underhood fire. That campaign counts 121,095 vehicles. A 1985 recall, 84V132, fixed throttle linkage that could bind.

1986-1988. Complaints pick up: 48 across three years, with steering leading the 1986. On the 1986 6000, two recalls swapped a push-pull headlight switch that could cut the lights. On 1986-1987 cars, recall 87V093 fixed the anti-lock brake pressure switch (6,004 vehicles in the full campaign, which may cover other models too). On the 1988, recall 88V048 inspected for cracks in the front lower control arm bracket and replaced the engine cradle where needed, and 88V164 replaced a fuel feed hose that could leak.

1989-1991. Wikipedia says all-wheel drive became standard for 1989 and moved to the SE for 1990, when the STE name went to the Grand Prix. These cars were assembled in Oklahoma City. The wagon was replaced by the Trans Sport in 1990. Complaints total 33. Recall 92V124 rerouted power seat wiring that could chafe and short on 1990-1991 cars, a campaign of 319,181 vehicles.

Counted as of October 10, 2026. Across all years, hydraulic brakes lead with 14 complaints, then steering and seat belts with 12 each. On cars this old, newer years having had less time to collect complaints barely matters.

Fix or sell

Check the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls first. After that, compare a written quote to what a running 6000 sells for near you. For brake work, see bad brakes; for a car that's simply worn out, old or high mileage.

Selling it whole
