Selling a 2004-2006 Pontiac GTO that's done
Seven of every ten complaints filed with NHTSA about the modern GTO name the suspension: 431 of 615, counted as of October 10, 2026. And NHTSA lists no recall campaign for the car in any of its three years. Owners complained, but there was never a free dealer fix to go with it.

The Holden years, split by engine
Wikipedia describes the 2004-2006 GTO as the fifth generation, made by GM's Australian arm, Holden, in Elizabeth, South Australia, from late 2003 to June 14, 2006. It rode on the V-body platform, related to the Holden Monaro and Commodore. Buyers chose a 6-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic.
2004: the 5.7-liter LS1
The first year has the most complaints, 245. The suspension leads with 152, tires follow with 38, and power train is third with 13. The 2004 also accounts for both of the complaints reporting deaths and 10 of the 17 reporting injuries.
2005-2006: the 6.0-liter LS2
For 2005, the GTO switched to the 6.0-liter LS2. The 2005 drew 154 complaints: suspension 93, tires 19, electrical 11. The 2006 climbs back to 216, and the suspension takes 186 of them. That's the highest share of any year in the file. Tires drop to 10.
NHTSA's file doesn't break the suspension complaints down further, so we don't guess at which part owners meant. If a shop has already told you what failed on yours, that diagnosis is what matters.
Complaints by model year
Owner complaints logged with NHTSA, counted October 10, 2026. A 2006 has had a year or two less than a 2004 for owners to report problems, though all three are now around twenty years old.
| Model year | Engine | Complaints | Suspension | Tires | Crashes reported | Recall campaigns |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2004 | 5.7 LS1 | 245 | 152 | 38 | 7 | 0 |
| 2005 | 6.0 LS2 | 154 | 93 | 19 | 4 | 0 |
| 2006 | 6.0 LS2 | 216 | 186 | 10 | 3 | 0 |
Repair, keep or sell?
With no recall campaign on record, the owner pays for every repair. Ask a shop for an estimate on paper, then check what GTOs that run, with your year, engine and gearbox, sell for. Some owners hold onto these cars as weekend toys; if yours has been parked for years with the plan of fixing it "someday," the sitting for years guide is worth a read.
When the suspension is the issue, broken suspension explains what to look at before deciding. Check the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup either way.
How to sell the GTO whole
- Note the VIN, mileage, engine, manual or automatic, and what's broken.
- Ask for an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
- Tell us where it's parked and whether all four wheels turn. Low-slung coupes load better when we know ahead of time. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
- Don't strip it first. Leave the wheels, seats and engine in. If anything was sold off already, say so.
- The driver will need the title and will check your ID. After you sell covers plates and insurance.
