Selling a junk Pontiac LeMans

Seat belts fill the LeMans file. Owners filed 116 complaints with NHTSA on the 1988-1993 car, and 49 of them name the seat belts. Three of its four recalls are seat belt campaigns too.

Which LeMans this is

Wikipedia lists six LeMans generations, starting in 1961. The photo above shows the fifth generation (1978-1981), built in Pontiac, Michigan. EPA data, and this page, cover only the sixth: a small car Wikipedia lists as built from 1987 to 1993 in Bupyeong, Incheon, South Korea. EPA classes it as a compact.

The seat belt record

Seat belts are the top component on every model year, from 6 complaints on the 1988 to 11 each on the 1991 and 1992. The three belt recalls describe three different problems:

  • 88V163 (1988): front buckles might not latch properly, so the latch plate could pull out without pressing the release button. 85,063 vehicles.
  • 93V154 (1988-1991): the red release button could fracture, so the buckle might not latch or might not release. 182,045 vehicles.
  • 94V248 (1990-1993): too little lubrication in the guide track where the shoulder belt carrier moves. Owners could hear chattering, feel it bind, or find it stopped completely. Dealers lubricated the track. 91,275 vehicles.

The vehicle counts are for each whole campaign and may include other GM models.

The fourth recall, 88V094, covers 1988 cars whose fuel filler neck may have been incompletely welded and could leak fuel. That campaign counts 72,616 vehicles.

Everything else owners reported

Hydraulic service brakes come second with 18 complaints, led by the 1990 with 6. There's no brake recall. After that the numbers get small: electrical system 9, power train 7, suspension 4, exterior lighting 4.

Numbers are from NHTSA's file of owner complaints on October 10, 2026. The 1993 has had a little less time than the 1988 for owners to report problems, but after three decades that matters little.

Fix it or let it go

A belt that won't latch or a carrier that sticks is a safety problem, so run the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls first. For anything bigger, get a written quote and compare it to what a running LeMans sells for where you live. If it hasn't moved in years, sitting for years explains what that changes, and old or high mileage covers the rest.

Selling it whole

Get an offer online or call (877) 421-6008. Have the VIN and mileage ready and say what's wrong. Tell us its location and whether it can be pushed; the truck comes to it. Leave the parts on and mention anything missing. No title? See selling with no title.

Other small Pontiacs: the Sunbird and Sunfire, or every Pontiac we cover.
