Sell a broken or non-running Porsche 911
Close to half of all owner complaints NHTSA holds for the 911 sit on seven model years. Of 375 complaints across 1984 to 2026, 182 are on the 1999-2005 cars, the years Wikipedia gives the 996, the first 911 with a water-cooled engine.

The 911 by era
We counted these in NHTSA's complaint database on October 10, 2026. Each is something an owner chose to report, which makes the list a record of grievances rather than a reliability score, and a 992 has been around for far fewer years than a 996. Era dates are Wikipedia's.
| Era (Wikipedia dates) | Model years grouped here | Complaints | What owners named most |
|---|---|---|---|
| Carrera 3.2 (1984-1989) | 1984-1988 | 4 | Seat belts, tires, fuel lines |
| 964 (1989-1993) | 1989-1992 | 11 | Air bags, structure |
| Last air-cooled cars | 1995-1998 | 31 | Electrical, air bags, structure |
| 996 (1999-2005) | 1999-2005 | 182 | Engine |
| 997 (2004-2012) | 2006-2012 | 77 | Engine |
| 991 (2011-2019) | 2013-2019 | 36 | Lighting, electrical |
| 992 (2019-now) | 2020-2026 | 34 | Fuel and propulsion |
Wikipedia's dates overlap: the 997 arrived in 2004 and the 991 in 2011, so a 2004, 2005, 2011 or 2012 car could be either one. Your VIN settles it.
Air-cooled cars, 1984-1998
The whole air-cooled run here has just 46 complaints. Wikipedia calls the Carrera 3.2 the last of the original 911 series; the 964 that followed for 1989 borrowed technology from the 959. The 1995 stands out with 14 complaints, three of them reporting a fire, and five naming the electrical system.
The recalls on these cars are about parts that wear with age:
- 92V142: the plastic ball sockets on the cruise control linkage of 1989-1992 cars can break, and the loose linkage can jam against parts near the throttle (11,091 vehicles).
- 96V147: an upper universal joint in the steering column of 1989-1993 cars cracked during manufacturing. Dealers inspect and replace cracked joints (12,538 vehicles).
- 04V601: on 1995-1998 cars, tension on the soft top's catch lever can ease and cause a crack (8,638 vehicles).
An air-cooled car that has been apart for years is its own case. See old project car.
The 996 and 997: where the engine complaints are
Wikipedia marks the 996, introduced in 1998, as the point where a water-cooled flat-six replaced the air-cooled engine the 911 had used for 34 years. The body shell got its first major redesign at the same time.
That is where the engine complaints pile up. On the 2001, 21 of 35 complaints name the engine. On the 2002 it's 17 of 27, and on the 2003, 13 of 28. The 2004 has 30 of 47, plus 10 more under engine and engine cooling, and seven of its complaints report a crash. The 2007 has the highest total of any year, 50, and 40 of those name the engine.
NHTSA lists no recall campaign for the 2004 or the 2007 911. A complaint file and a recall list measure different things: one is what owners reported, the other is what Porsche agreed to fix. The recalls from this era are smaller items, like 00V109 for a fuel gauge reading on 1999-2000 cars and 06V008 for a tailpipe weld on 2005-2006 cars.
The 991 and 992: few complaints, many recalls
From 2013 to 2026 the 911 has 70 complaints in all, yet the 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023 model years each have eight recall campaigns listed. The ones to check first:
- 24V809: a do-not-drive recall on some 2021-2024 cars for a center-lock wheel bolt that can break and free the wheel. The 2,251-vehicle campaign also covers the 2025 Panamera and some 2024 718 models.
- 24V155: on 2020-2024 cars, the windshield and rear window may not be properly secured and can detach (8,101 vehicles).
- 23V715: dealers reprogram the air bag control unit on certain 2021-2024 cars (2,923 vehicles).
- 19V533: an air bag control unit power supply part on 2016-2017 cars. The 7,517-vehicle campaign includes the Boxster, Cayman and Panamera.
- 25V896: dealers update driver assistance software because the backup camera picture may fail to appear; the 172,107-vehicle campaign mixes in the Cayenne, Taycan and Panamera.
Complaints filed, by model year
Read the recall column one year at a time: a single campaign shows up under every year it touches, so adding it up overshoots 55.

Rebuild it or sell it?
A 911 engine job is rarely small. Get the shop estimate on paper, then look at listings for running 911s with your year and miles. If the gap is thin, selling it unrepaired makes sense.
- Search NHTSA for open recalls on your VIN, starting with the wheel bolt recall on 2021-2024 cars and the glass recall on 2020-2024 cars.
- Engine gone? The blown engine guide explains how to weigh it. If it was burning oil first, see burning oil.
- Sat for years? Flat tires, old fuel and a dead battery change what it takes to move the car. Sitting for years covers it.
How to sell the 911 as it is
- Write down the 911's VIN and mileage, what failed, and if it can be pushed.
- Ask for an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
- Tell us where the 911 is parked: garage, street or shop. Since it sits low, flag flat tires or a steep drive, and say if the engine is installed, on a stand or in boxes. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
- Keep the parts with it. Wheels, catalytic converters and any removed engine parts go with the car. Tell us what's missing.
- When the 911 leaves, our driver checks your photo ID and takes the keys and title. Can't find the title? Read selling with no title. Plates and insurance rules are in after you sell.
The Boxster and Cayman have their own pages, as does every other Porsche we cover.
Questions people ask
- Which 911 model years have the most NHTSA complaints?
- The 2007, with 50 complaints as of October 10, 2026, and 40 of them name the engine. Next come the 2004 (47), the 2001 (35), the 2003 (28) and the 2002 (27). The 992 cars are young, and their owners have had only a handful of years to report anything.
- Was there a recall for the engine on the 2004 or 2007 911?
- NHTSA lists no recall campaign at all for the 2004 or 2007 911, though those two years hold the most engine complaints. Complaints are what owners reported; recalls are what Porsche agreed to fix. The recall page at nhtsa.gov will confirm it for your VIN.
- What is the 911 center-lock wheel recall?
- Recall 24V809 covers some 2021-2024 911s. NHTSA says the center-lock bolt can break, and a wheel could then detach, and owners are told to leave the car parked until a dealer has checked the fastening system. The 2,251-vehicle campaign also includes the 2025 Panamera and some 2024 718 models.
- Will you take a 911 with the engine out or in pieces?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars. Tell us up front what's been removed and where the parts are, because missing parts change the offer. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
