Selling a broken or junk Porsche Cayenne

No Cayenne year tops the 2004 at NHTSA: it holds 101 of the 661 complaints owners filed across all Cayennes from 2003 to 2026. On that year they named the power train most, 18 times, ahead of the engine at 15.

If your Cayenne now has a transfer case that grinds, an engine that won't run or a wall of warning lights, you can sell the whole car as it sits. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickup is free anywhere in the US.

Problems by generation

Our Cayenne figures come from NHTSA owner complaint records pulled October 10, 2026. Each is one driver's story, not a proven defect, and newer Cayennes have spent too little time on the road to rack up many. Generation dates and engines are from Wikipedia's Porsche Cayenne article.

GenerationBuiltEngines and gearboxModel years grouped hereComplaints

Third (E3, 9YA/9YB)Aug. 2017 - now2.9 twin-turbo V6, 3.0 turbo V6, 4.0 twin-turbo V8. 8-speed ZF automatic.2019-2026115

The model-year split is ours, made from those build dates, so check a 2010 or a 2018 by VIN. A fourth, battery-electric Cayenne went into production in February 2026.

First generation: fuel lines, drivetrain and the V8

Wikipedia notes the Cayenne was the first V8-engined vehicle Porsche had built since the 928 ended in 1995. It lists failure of the centre driveshaft carrier bearing as a first-generation problem, and says later Cayenne S and Turbo engines got aluminium coolant pipes to address an issue on the earlier ones.

The complaint file leans the same way. On the 2006, 15 of 55 complaints name the fuel and propulsion system. On the 2005, 11 of 46 name engine and engine cooling. On the 2008, 15 of 42 name the engine. Two of the 2006 complaints report a death.

Recalls worth looking up on these years:

  • 17V576: dealers replace the fuel filter flanges on 2003-2006 gasoline Cayennes with flanges that carry a protective film. The campaign lists 50,145 vehicles.
  • 04V071: a change in the transfer case housing on some 2004 models could starve the transfer case's internal gears of oil. Dealers inspect it and replace the transfer case if needed (4,099 vehicles).
  • 19V446: a shifter cable bushing on 2003-2010 Cayennes. Owners were told to use the parking brake until it's replaced. The 99,665-vehicle campaign also covers Panamera models.
  • 08V076: on 2008 V6 models, a fuel line can rub against the rear engine compartment cover (5,573 vehicles).

Second generation: the transfer case years

The 2011 has the second-highest count, 62, and 32 of those name the engine. That year is in recall 17V368, which replaces the fastening screws for the camshaft adjusters on 2011 Cayenne S and Turbo models. Several Panamera trims share that recall, and 18,005 counts every car in it, not only Cayennes.

From 2012 to 2014 the power train leads again: 18 of 36 complaints on the 2012, 15 of 40 on the 2013 and 16 of 53 on the 2014. Wikipedia says 92A Cayennes other than the Hybrid and V6 Diesel can suffer transfer case problems. Porsche answered with a 10-year transfer case warranty on 2011-2014 models and a 7-year one on 2015-2018 models, both with unlimited mileage.

Two more campaigns reach most of these cars. Recall 16V169 checks 2011-2016 brake pedals for a missing circlip on the pivot pin (88,300 vehicles). Recall 12V065 replaces the headlamp locking parts on 2011-2012 models whose headlamps may come loose (20,278 vehicles).

Third generation: fewer complaints, newer recalls

The 2019-2026 cars hold 115 complaints across eight model years. On the 2019, air bags (11) and the electrical system (10) lead. Plug-in hybrids from 2018 on carry 14.1, 17.9 or 25.9 kWh lithium-ion batteries, depending on the year.

Recall 24V533 is a do-not-drive notice for some 2024 Cayennes with a cracked front upper control arm (2,475 vehicles). A software fix for the backup camera, recall 25V896, is one campaign of 172,107 vehicles that also takes in the 911, Taycan and Panamera.

Fix it or sell it?

Put the repair estimate next to the price a healthy Cayenne of your year fetches. If the two are close, the sale usually makes more sense. Before you decide:

  1. Run the VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup. Check the remedy NHTSA shows for each campaign: 23V841's is just an instruction not to use the 220V/240V cable.
  2. Transfer case on a 2011-2018? Ask a Porsche dealer whether your VIN is still inside the extended transfer case warranty before you pay for one.
  3. Engine or gearbox gone? Get the quote in writing. Our blown engine and bad transmission guides walk through the choice, and repairs cost more than it's worth covers the math.
  4. Plug-in hybrid? Recall 23V841 tells owners of various Porsche models not to use the 220V/240V portable charging cable. Check whether yours is on it.

Selling the Cayenne whole

  1. Have the basics ready: VIN, odometer reading, the symptoms and whether the wheels turn.
  2. Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Let us know the parking spot. If a locked transfer case keeps your Cayenne from rolling, mention it so our truck comes ready. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
  4. Leave it whole. Keep the wheels, catalytic converters and any hybrid battery on the car. Parts already removed? List them; the offer is based on a complete car.
  5. When the Cayenne is picked up, the driver gets the title and sees your ID card. If the title is lost, begin with the no-title guide. Plate and insurance rules by state are in after you sell.

Questions people ask

Which Cayenne model years have the most NHTSA complaints?
The 2004 Cayenne leads, at 101 complaints by October 10, 2026. Next are the 2011 (62), the 2006 (55), the 2014 (53) and the 2005 (46). A 2023 or 2024 Cayenne just hasn't been driven long, so its few complaints don't tell us much yet.
Did Porsche extend the warranty on the Cayenne transfer case?
According to Wikipedia, yes, on the second-generation (92A) Cayenne: a 10-year warranty on 2011-2014 models and a 7-year warranty on 2015-2018 models, both with unlimited mileage. The Hybrid and V6 Diesel are not part of that transfer case story. A Porsche dealer can tell you if your VIN is still inside the window.
What is the do-not-drive recall on the 2024 Cayenne?
Recall 24V533. On some 2024 Cayennes the driver's side front upper control arm may have been installed with cracks. Cayenne owners should stop driving it until a dealer replaces the arm for free. The campaign covers 2,475 vehicles.
Will you buy a Cayenne that won't start or roll?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Say what's wrong and whether the wheels turn, so we send a truck that can handle it.
