Selling a junk or non-running Porsche Macan

Nearly a quarter of the complaints Macan owners have sent NHTSA are about air bags: 62 of 266. Almost all of those, 59, are on the 2015-2018 cars, and two recalls on the passenger seat's occupant sensor cover the same years.

If your Macan has a warning light you can't clear, a fuel smell, or an engine that won't turn over, you can sell the whole car as it sits. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickup is free anywhere in the US.

The Macan in three stretches

Wikipedia says the Macan has been Porsche's best-selling model worldwide since 2015, its first full year on sale, ahead of the larger Cayenne. The first generation (95B) was built in Leipzig from February 2014 into 2026, on gas engines: a 2.0-liter turbo four, a 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6 and a 3.0-liter turbo V6, all with a 7-speed PDK. The electric second generation went into production in May 2024 with a 95 kWh battery and one or two motors.

NHTSA's records, read on October 10, 2026, supply these numbers. They tell you what owners bothered to report, not how dependable the SUV is, and the electric Macan has only been out since 2024.

EPA lists the Macan through the 2026 model year; NHTSA's file has no 2026 complaints yet.

2015-2018: the passenger air bag sensor and the fuel pump

Air bag complaints run 9 on the 2015, 15 on the 2016, 25 on the 2017 and 10 on the 2018. The recalls that match them replace the front passenger seat's occupant sensor mat and seat cushion:

  • 17V133: some 2015-2016 Macan S and Turbo and 2017 Macan GTS models, where the sensor mat may fail (17,871 vehicles).
  • 21V131: some 2015-2018 Macans, where the mat may degrade (39,547 vehicles).

Fuel is the other thread. On the 2018, 5 of 36 complaints name the fuel and propulsion system. Recall 20V077 says the fuel pump service cover on 2015-2018 Macans may touch the flow nozzle on the filter flange and crack it, causing a fuel leak (70,117 vehicles). Recall 17V289 inspects and replaces cracked fuel pump flanges on 2015-2017 cars (51,497 vehicles), and 15V717 installs an improved low pressure fuel line on 2015-2016 Macan S and Turbo models (21,835 vehicles).

On the 2017, the busiest year, engine and service brakes each have 8 complaints behind the 25 for air bags. Recall 16V680 covers front anti-roll bar links on some 2017 models (243 vehicles).

2019-2023: headlights

Exterior lighting leads on the 2019 (10 of 21) and the 2020 (13 of 28). Recall 22V656 has dealers check the headlights for missing sealing caps on 2015-2020 Macans. That campaign counts 222,858 vehicles, but it also covers the Cayenne, Panamera, Cayman S and older Boxsters, and NHTSA gives no split by model, so the number is not the Macan's alone.

The 2021 has only 12 complaints, yet four of them report a crash. It also has a do-not-drive recall, 21V224, for shock absorber screws that might not have been tightened on 10 vehicles. NHTSA lists no recall campaigns for the 2022 or 2023.

2024-2025: the electric Macan arrives

These two years have 20 complaints between them. The recalls here belong to the Macan Electric: 24V889 for headlights bright enough to exceed the maximum light output (2,941 vehicles), 25V220 for a rearview camera image that may blur or not show (8,571 vehicles), and 25V492 for front seat air bags that may not be properly secured to the backrest frame (3 vehicles).

Complaints and recalls by model year

Multi-year campaigns repeat in each row they reach, so don't add this column; the true total is 15.

Worth fixing?

  1. Start with NHTSA's recall search. An air bag light or a fuel smell on a 2015-2018 Macan may be an open recall that a dealer fixes for free.
  2. Not a recall? Put the shop's estimate next to the asking price of a healthy Macan like yours. A repair that swallows most of that price is a sign to sell instead.
  3. Warning lights that keep coming back are covered in electrical problems.

How to sell the Macan whole

  1. Note your Macan's VIN, its miles today, any warning lights showing, and if it fires up.
  2. Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Say where it sits: a driveway, a parking garage, a dealer's service lot. An electric parking brake locked on, or wheels that won't turn, is worth mentioning before the truck arrives. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
  4. Don't strip it. Leave the wheels, catalytic converters and, on an electric Macan, the battery. Already pulled something? Say so up front.
  5. When the Macan goes, show your ID and give our driver its title and keys. Missing title? Read selling with no title. Rules on plates and insurance by state are in after you sell.

Questions people ask

Which Macan model years have the most NHTSA complaints?
The 2017, with 71 complaints as of October 10, 2026. The 2015 and 2018 have 36 each, the 2016 has 31 and the 2020 has 28. A 2024 or 2025 Macan has had little road time to gather reports.
What is the Macan passenger air bag sensor recall?
Two campaigns replace the front passenger seat's occupant sensor mat and seat cushion. Recall 17V133 covers some 2015-2017 Macans (17,871 vehicles) and recall 21V131 covers some 2015-2018 Macans (39,547 vehicles). Dealers do the work free of charge.
Has any Macan carried a do-not-drive recall?
Yes, a small one. Recall 21V224 covers 10 vehicles from the 2021 model year whose shock absorber screw connections might not have been tightened. Owners were told not to drive until the dealer fixed it.
Do you buy Macans that won't start?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, gas or electric, and pickup is free anywhere in the US. You sell the whole car as it sits.
