Selling a damaged or dead Porsche Taycan

Taycan owners have filed 276 complaints with NHTSA, and 122 of them name the electrical system. That is more than the next five parts on the list put together: power train, service brakes, engine, unknown and forward collision avoidance add up to 94.

A Taycan that won't power up, won't charge or has a battery warning is still a whole car. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, you sell the whole car as it sits, and pickup is free anywhere in the US.

Two Taycans, seven model years

Wikipedia splits the car into the Type 9J1 I, built 2019-2024, and the Type 9J1 II from 2024. Both are built in Stuttgart on the Volkswagen Group J1 platform, which the Taycan shares with the Audi e-tron GT. The base Taycan has one rear motor and rear-wheel drive; the 4, 4S, GTS, Turbo and Turbo S have two motors and all-wheel drive. The rear motor drives through a two-speed automatic. From 2024 the battery is 89 kWh, 82.3 kWh of it usable.

These Taycan counts are what NHTSA had on October 10, 2026. They show which owners chose to file, not how reliable the car is, and a 2024 or 2025 Taycan hasn't been out long.

EPA lists the Taycan through the 2026 model year, but NHTSA's file holds no 2026 complaints yet. Which type a 2024 or 2025 car is depends on build date; the VIN will tell you.

2020-2022: electrical complaints and battery recalls

The first three model years carry almost all of it. On the 2020, 46 of 94 complaints name the electrical system; on the 2021, 36 of 72; on the 2022, 30 of 79. These cars are also where the battery and software recalls land:

  • 24V732: a short circuit can develop within one of the high-voltage battery's modules. Dealers are to install diagnostic software as the final remedy. The campaign covers 27,527 vehicles.
  • 24V215 and 24V217: two smaller traction battery campaigns, 606 and 749 vehicles. Taycan owners should keep charging at 80% or lower until a dealer does the repair.
  • 21V486: dealers reprogram the power electronics and control unit on 2020-2021 cars (10,373 vehicles).
  • 22V404: a software error can leave the center screen, rearview camera image included, black (12,490 vehicles).

The 2021 model year alone has 22 recall campaigns listed.

2023-2025: brakes and the newer battery recall

Later cars have far fewer complaints, 31 across three years. On the 2023, service brakes lead with 5 of 20. Recall 24V455 replaces front brake hoses that can crack and leak fluid on 2020-2025 Taycans, 31,689 vehicles in all. Recall 23V615 has dealers test 2023 batteries for leakage and replace them as needed (4,777 vehicles). Recall 25V221 replaces the front passenger seat cushion on 2022-2023 cars whose occupant sensing may switch off the passenger air bag (9,735 vehicles).

Some campaigns reach well past the Taycan. Recall 23V841, on the 220V/240V portable charging cable, covers 41,345 vehicles across various Porsche models. The backup-camera software campaign, 25V896, counts 172,107 vehicles across four Porsche lines. Recall 25V415, a strut retaining ring that can come loose, is a 284-vehicle campaign shared with the Panamera.

Year by year

The recall column counts every campaign NHTSA lists for that year. Many campaigns span several years, so the column doesn't add up to 28.

Battery trouble: repair or sell?

Start with the recalls, because several of them reach the battery itself.

  1. Run the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup. NHTSA lists each recall's remedy; for recall 23V841 it is only to stop using the 220V/240V charging cable.
  2. If 24V215 or 24V217 is open, follow the 80% charging limit until the repair is done.
  3. Battery out of warranty and not on a recall? Ask for the estimate on paper, then price a working Taycan of the same year. Our EV battery guide covers the signs and the choice, and electrical problems covers faults that keep coming back.

Selling a Taycan whole

  1. Gather the VIN, mileage, the warning or fault, and whether the car powers on.
  2. Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Say where the car is and if its wheels turn. An electric car that won't power on can be hard to move by hand, so the truck that comes needs to know. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
  4. Leave the battery and charging gear with the car. Don't pull the wheels or anything else first. Anything missing belongs on the list you give us.
  5. When the Taycan is picked up, the driver sees your title and ID. Can't find the Taycan title? Read selling with no title. For plates and insurance, read after you sell.

Questions people ask

Which Taycan model years have the most NHTSA complaints?
The 2020, with 94 complaints as of October 10, 2026, then the 2022 (79) and the 2021 (72). The 2023 has 20, the 2024 has 9 and the 2025 has 2. Part of that drop is age: a 2025 has had about a year on the road to draw reports.
Why do some Taycan recalls say to charge only to 80%?
Recalls 24V215 (606 vehicles) and 24V217 (749 vehicles) cover some Taycans with a high-voltage battery concern. Until the dealer fix is done, Porsche wants Taycan owners to cap charging at 80%. Enter the VIN on NHTSA's recall page to find out if your car is one of them.
Will you buy a Taycan that won't power on or charge?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, including electric ones, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Keep the Taycan's battery in place and let us know if the car wakes up at all.
