Selling a broken or wrecked Rivian R1T

More than half of all R1T complaints sit on its first model year: 68 of the 129 that owners filed with NHTSA are on the 2022, and suspension is named in 13 of them. All 8 complaints that report an injury are on the 2022 too. These counts are as of October 10, 2026, and a 2025 or 2026 truck simply hasn't been driven long enough to build up much of a record.

The record, year by year

Tallies date from October 10, 2026. Most R1T recalls stretch over more than one model year, so adding the recall figures down the column overshoots the 18 distinct campaigns.

In total, crashes appear in 10 complaints, injuries in 8 and a fire in 1 (on a 2023). No complaint reports a death.

Known problems on the R1T

Wikipedia dates R1T production from 2021, at Normal, Illinois. EPA data starts with the 2022 model year. With no second generation yet, the sections split it by model year.

2022: suspension and early recalls

Suspension leads the 2022 complaints. Recall 22V744, which NHTSA files under the R1T's front upper control arm, covers a fastener between that arm and the steering knuckle that might be under-torqued. That campaign counts 12,212 vehicles in total, R1S and Rivian EDV units among them. Recall 22V319 applies only to the R1T: the occupant sensor may not turn off the passenger air bag when a child or child seat is in that seat. The campaign counts 473 vehicles, and the remedy is for Rivian Service Centers to replace the front passenger seat, free of charge. The 2022 also shares the accelerator pedal recall (23V883) and the passenger belt sensor recall (23V109) with the R1S.

2023: air bags come to the top

On the 2023, 14 of 39 complaints name the air bags. The recalls for this year include headlight aim (24V367), pillar trim clips damaged during service (24V408), and an earlier software release that could leave the defrost and defog controls dead (23V783).

2024 to 2027: few complaints

From 2024 on, owners filed 22 complaints across four model years. Wikipedia says the 2024 R1T earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick+, with a Good rating in the updated moderate overlap test. On some 2024 trucks the dashboard air bag warning label may be missing (24V319); that campaign's 127 vehicles include R1S models too. The 2025 recalls are the ones to read closely. Recall 25V537 covers a faulty ground inside the high voltage distribution box that can cut drive power. In 25V585, Highway Assist software might fail to lock onto the lead vehicle. Recall 25V387 covers front turn signals that may not flash.

Two recalls reach across most years. Recall 26V003 covers rear toe links that a past service visit may have reassembled incorrectly. Recall 26V597 is for a pop-up message that can hide part of the backup camera picture, on 2022-2026 R1Ts. Its 98,828 vehicles are shared with the R1S and R2.

What makes a broken R1T different

Wikipedia describes the R1T as a luxury mid-size pickup built body-on-frame, with the chassis bolted and glued to the body instead of welded. It came with dual motors or quad motors (one per wheel) and 105, 135 or 149 kWh packs. One feature to stop counting on: Wikipedia says the backup battery and Rivian-to-Rivian charging have not materialized. A truck with a flat pack can't get a charge from a second R1T.

Repair it or sell it?

Type the truck's VIN into NHTSA's recall lookup before anything else. The remedies above are free, and some are over-the-air updates.

If a fix isn't covered, set the written estimate against the truck's repaired value.

Selling the truck whole

  1. Jot down the VIN, miles and symptoms. Say whether the truck powers on and rolls.
  2. Ask for an offer online or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Tell us where it is. It could be at home, at a body shop, or parked off a trail. Flat tires or a wheel that won't turn change how it gets loaded, so mention them. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
  4. Leave it as it is. Pack, wheels, bed gear and all. Tell us about anything already taken off.
  5. On pickup day, sign the title to the buyer and have your license handy. After you sell covers plates and insurance by state.

Questions people ask

Why does the 2022 R1T have so many more complaints?
It holds 68 of 129 complaints in NHTSA's October 10, 2026 file, 13 of them about suspension. Being the earliest R1T year, it has also been on the road the longest. The 2022 is listed in 12 recall campaigns, more than any other R1T year.
Is there an R1T recall for losing drive power?
Yes, recall 25V537 on certain 2025 R1S and R1T vehicles. A ground connection inside the high voltage distribution box may be faulty and can cut drive power. The whole campaign is 23 vehicles. Rivian inspects and repairs it, or replaces the battery pack, free of charge.
Will you buy an R1T that won't drive?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, pickups included, and pickup is free anywhere in the US. Tell us if the truck rolls and where it is parked.
Do I need to take the tonneau, rack or wheels off first?
No. We take it whole, as it sits. Anything missing, such as a removed rack, belongs in the description you send us.
