Selling a dead or junk Saab 9-4X
The Saab 9-4X was in production for about ten months. Wikipedia lists production from February 2011 to November 2011, at GM's Ramos Arizpe plant in Mexico, and calls it the only Saab built there. The EPA lists it for the 2011 and 2012 model years, in front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive. Saab Automobile later went bankrupt and was defunct by 2016, so a 9-4X needing major work belongs to a brand that no longer exists.

One short generation, built with the Cadillac SRX
There is only one 9-4X. Wikipedia describes it as a mid-size luxury crossover on GM's Theta Premium platform, closely related to the Cadillac SRX and built in the same Mexican plant. The engine listed is a 2.8-liter turbo V6 with a six-speed automatic, and the all-wheel drive version is Saab XWD. It replaced the 9-7X, which was built in the U.S. and ended in December 2008.
When GM agreed to sell Saab to Spyker in 2010, Wikipedia says GM kept supplying engines, transmissions and completed 9-4X vehicles from its Mexican factory.
What owners reported, and the two recalls
NHTSA's complaint file holds only five 9-4X complaints, all on the 2011. Each names a different component: power train, air bags, suspension, visibility and wipers, and one listed as unknown or other. None reported a crash, fire, injury or tow. With so few cars built, five complaints tell you very little either way.
Both recalls are about one part, the rear suspension toe link adjuster:
- 14V571 (September 2014): covers 9-4X models built February 1, 2011 to September 13, 2011. Dealers check the torque on the left and right rear toe link adjuster lock nuts and replace parts if needed.
- 21V473 (June 2021): GM's notice says the 9-4X's adjuster may not have been properly tightened, and a loose toe link could result. Its notice advises against driving if certain warning lamps or other listed symptoms come on.
The counts on these campaigns are whole-campaign counts that include the Cadillac SRX: 290,241 vehicles for 14V571, which also covers 2010-2015 SRX models, and 380,498 for 21V473, which also covers 2010-2016 SRX models. They are not counts of 9-4Xs.
Complaints and recalls by model year
These complaint counts come from the NHTSA flat file pulled October 10, 2026. Each recall campaign lists both the 2011 and 2012 model years.
| Model year | NHTSA complaints | Recall campaigns |
|---|---|---|
| 2011 | 5 | 2 |
| 2012 | 0 | 2 |
A 2012 9-4X has had a shorter stretch than a 2011 for owners to file anything, which is one reason the 2012 sits at zero, and Wikipedia lists production of the whole line as ending in November 2011.
Repair it or sell it?
First, enter the Saab's VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup to learn if either toe link campaign was never closed out on your SUV. If one is still open, our open recall guide explains how that affects a sale.
If the trouble is in the rear suspension, the broken suspension guide walks through when a repair makes sense. Then set the written quote against the price a running 9-4X like yours fetches. When the quote comes near that price, letting it go unrepaired is the simpler path.
Selling the 9-4X whole
- Write down the 9-4X's VIN, its mileage and what it does or won't do.
- Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
- Say where the 9-4X sits, a driveway, a lot or a garage, and whether its wheels still turn, so the driver brings a truck that can load it. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
- Leave the wheels, engine and everything else on it.
- Have the Saab's title and a photo ID in hand for the driver. Title missing? See selling with no title.

Questions people ask
- How many complaints has the Saab 9-4X had with NHTSA?
- Five, all filed on the 2011 model year, as of October 10, 2026. None reported a crash, fire, injury or tow. The five name five different components: power train, air bags, suspension, visibility and wipers, and one unknown or other.
- What do the 9-4X recalls cover?
- Both are about the rear suspension toe link adjuster. Recall 14V571 has dealers check the torque on the toe link adjuster lock nuts. Recall 21V473 says that during assembly the adjuster may not have been properly tightened, and a loose toe link could result. Both campaigns also cover Cadillac SRX models, so their vehicle counts are not 9-4X counts.
- Will you buy a 9-4X that won't run?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Tell us the VIN, what's wrong, and whether it rolls.
- Do I need to pull parts off the 9-4X first?
- No. You sell the whole car as it sits. If a part is already off the Saab, mention it up front.
