Selling a junk or non-running Saab 9000

Thirteen of the 136 complaints owners filed with NHTSA about the Saab 9000 are flagged as involving a fire. The very first 9000 recall, 86V143 in 1986, covered a wiring harness that could chafe on the wiper motor bracket, short out and start a fire.

A 9000 that no longer runs can still go whole. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, so you can sell the whole car as it sits, with free pickup anywhere in the US.

The 9000 in three stretches

The 9000 had one long generation, built from 24 May 1984 to 6 May 1998 and styled by Björn Envall with Giorgetto Giugiaro at Italdesign. It shared its Type Four platform with the Alfa Romeo 164, Fiat Croma and Lancia Thema. Wikipedia lists 2.0 B202/B204 and 2.3 B234 four-cylinders, with or without a turbo, and a ZF 4HP18 four-speed automatic. The changes below come from Wikipedia; complaint counts are NHTSA owner reports as tallied October 10, 2026.

1986-1989: chafing wires, cables and lines

Three of the early recalls are about something rubbing through. Besides the wiper bracket harness on the 1986, recall 89V191 rerouted the throttle kickdown cable on 1988-1989 cars because it could chafe against any of three steel brake fluid lines near the hydraulic brake unit. Recall 90V001 added a relay on 1986-1990 automatics after wear on the neutral safety and backup lamp switch's circuit card left residue in the electrical area.

Recall 88V057 capped a cruise control clip on the 1988 because a ball chain to the accelerator pedal could catch on it. Recall 88V185 replaced fuel filters on the 1989 that might not meet the leak standard. The electrical system is the top or tied-top complaint component on the 1987, 1988 and 1989.

1990-1994: fuel hoses, oil cooler lines and air bag modules

This stretch holds 77 of the 136 complaints. The 1993 tops every year with 29, and nine name the power train. Recall 91V002 fixed a gear selector arm that could come loose from its cable on 250 cars from 1991.

Fuel shows up on the 1991, 1992 and 1993 complaints, and recall 94V029 replaced fuel filler and tank vent hoses on 1992-1993 cars that could crack under their clamps and leak. Recall 94V126 covered 1992-1994 cars where, in a low-speed frontal hit, the oil cooler hose could break and leak oil onto the hot exhaust manifold.

Moisture is the other thread. Recall 95V067 sealed the ABS pressure switch wiring against corrosion on 1992-1994 cars, and recall 99V109 covered the air bag control module on the same years for the same reason. The 1994 has four complaints about air bags, more than any other component that year. Two brake light recalls round it out: 94V108 on the 1993 for a switch piston that could stick, and 94V084 on just 59 cars from 1994.

1995-1998: the quiet end

The last four model years have 25 complaints. The only recall starting here, 98V139, added an air bag alert label to the sun visor on 1997-1998 cars. Its 39,313-vehicle count covers other Saab models too.

Repair or sell?

  1. Check the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup. Many of these campaigns are more than 30 years old.
  2. Automatic slipping or stuck on a 1990s car? The power train leads the 1993 and ties on the 1992. Read bad transmission before paying for a rebuild.
  3. Smell of fuel or oil under the hood? Fuel hoses and oil cooler lines are both recall topics on this car. Get it looked at before you drive it.
  4. Mostly just old? Old or high mileage walks through when an aging car stops being worth the money.

Selling a 9000 whole

  1. Note the version: hatchback or CD sedan, turbo or not, manual or automatic, and the year.
  2. Ask for an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Describe how it's parked. Long-parked cars often have flat tires or seized brakes; tell us, and the truck comes ready. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
  4. Keep the 9000 whole. Leave the wheels, turbo and converter on, and tell us what's already gone.
  5. Find the title and have an ID ready at pickup. Title lost? See selling with no title.

Questions people ask

Which Saab 9000 model year has the most NHTSA complaints?
The 1993, with 29 complaints as of October 10, 2026, nine of them about the power train. The 1992 has 19, and the 1989 and 1994 have 14 each.
Does a low complaint count mean the 9000 was trouble-free?
No. A complaint count only shows what owners chose to report to NHTSA. This doesn't rate 9000 reliability, and it can't tell how any one owner cared for theirs.
Will you buy a 9000 that has been parked for years?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Say in your offer request if the wheels turn and whether it's in a barn, garage or yard.
