Selling a dead or junk Scion iA

NHTSA has no recall campaigns on file for the Scion iA, and owners filed 23 complaints about it as of October 10, 2026. It wore the Scion badge for one model year, 2016, before Toyota shut the brand down. So the public record says little about why a given iA has quit. The answer comes from a look at your own car.

A Mazda2 with a Scion badge

Scion added the iA sedan as a rebadged Mazda2, according to Wikipedia. It belongs to the third Mazda2 generation, which went into production in July 2014. For that generation, Wikipedia lists 1.3-liter and 1.5-liter Skyactiv-G gasoline four-cylinders, five- and six-speed Skyactiv-MT manuals and a six-speed Skyactiv-Drive automatic; it does not say which of these the iA got. The North American Mazda2 was built at Mazda's plant in Salamanca, Mexico. Wikipedia says Mazda did not sell that car in Canada or the United States, except in Puerto Rico.

In North America the iA took over from the Scion xD. When Scion closed, the car kept going as the Toyota Yaris iA for 2017 and 2018, then as the Toyota Yaris Sedan for 2019 and 2020. Exports to the US stopped in June 2020. The counts on this page cover the Scion-badged 2016 cars only.

What owners told NHTSA about the 2016

There is one model year, so there is one group. Of the 23 complaints:

  • Air bags: 6
  • Engine: 6
  • Electrical system: 5
  • Service brakes: 3
  • Wheels: 1
  • Power train: 1

A single report may list several parts of the car, so the lines above are not a split of the 23. NHTSA's file counts 6 crashes, 5 injured and 4 towed across these complaints, with no fires or deaths.

At this size, one extra air bag report would put that system alone at the top. The count reflects which owners took the time to write to NHTSA, nothing more. Recent model years get fewer years in which to pile up reports; a 2016 iA has had roughly a decade.

Repair it or let it go?

Weigh what the shop wants for your iA against what sellers ask for a working 2016 iA with similar miles. Once the estimate climbs toward that asking price, the repair money is unlikely to come back to you. The guide on when a repair outruns the car's value lays out that math.

  • Bags deployed after a collision? Read airbags deployed before paying for new modules.
  • Engine knocking, smoking or seized? The blown engine guide covers how to weigh it.
  • Warning lights, dead accessories or a no-start with a good battery? Start with electrical problems.

Selling your iA whole

  1. Copy the 17-character VIN off the iA's dash plate, then jot the odometer reading and what the sedan does or won't do.
  2. Get a number through the offer form, or by phoning (877) 421-6008.
  3. Explain where the iA is parked and whether its front wheels steer and roll, so the tow driver knows how to load a small sedan from that spot.
  4. Keep the Mazda-built parts on it. If the battery, catalytic converter or wheels have been pulled, flag it early; missing pieces lower the figure.
  5. When the tow truck arrives, hand over the signed Scion title, show ID, and pass along both keys if you have them. Your state decides who keeps the plates; after you sell lists them.

Lost the title? Our no-title guide explains the options. Looking at another Scion? See the iM, xD and tC, or every Scion we cover.

Questions people ask

Does the Scion iA have any recalls?
NHTSA lists no recall campaigns for the 2016 Scion iA as of October 10, 2026. Entering your own iA's VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls gives the final word.
Is the Scion iA a Mazda or a Toyota?
Both, in a way. Scion was a Toyota brand, and the iA was a rebadged Mazda2 sedan. After Toyota dropped Scion, the same car was sold as the Toyota Yaris iA for 2017 and 2018, then as the Toyota Yaris Sedan for 2019 and 2020.
What do iA owners complain about most?
Air bags and the engine, with 6 complaints each, then the electrical system with 5. That is out of 23 complaints in total, and a single filing may list several systems.
Will you buy an iA that won't start?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickup is free anywhere in the US. Mention the symptom, whether the wheels turn freely, and the spot the iA sits in.
