Selling a junk or non-running Scion iM
The only recall on the Scion iM is about a label. Under campaign 16V236, owners get a corrected label installed over the inaccurate one, free of charge. Owners sent NHTSA 12 complaints about the hatchback by our October 10, 2026 count, every one of them for a 2016.

Small numbers don't help much when your own iM won't start or a shop quote is too high. You can sell the whole car as it sits. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickup is free anywhere in the US.
Where the iM came from
Wikipedia says Scion launched the iM hatchback based on the international Toyota Auris. EPA's fuel economy data lists it for one model year, 2016, and puts it in the midsize car class. When Toyota folded Scion, the iM moved to the Toyota brand as the Corolla iM the next model year.
Twelve complaints on the 2016
Tallied from NHTSA's downloadable complaint data (FLAT_CMPL, pulled October 10, 2026).
| Model year | Complaints | Crashes | Injured | Towed | Fires | Recall campaigns |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2016 | 12 | 1 | 2 | 1 | 0 | 1 |
By component, power train leads with 4. Structure and "unknown or other" have 2 each. Seats, engine and service brakes have 1 each. With twelve reports in total, a single new one could reorder that list. Each one is a report an owner decided to send, so the count says nothing about how many iMs never had an issue. Younger model years also have had fewer years to gather reports than this 2016 has.
Recall 16V236: the label
Southeast Toyota Distributors reported this recall on April 22, 2016. It covers certain 2016 Scion FR-S, iM and tC cars, plus Toyota Yaris, RAV4, Land Cruiser and 4Runner vehicles, built from January 28 to March 14, 2016. The fix is a corrected label installed over the inaccurate one, free of charge.
NHTSA lists 94 vehicles in the campaign. That figure covers every model in it, so the number of iMs is smaller. Put your VIN into NHTSA's recall lookup to see whether yours is one of them.
Repair or sell
Get the shop's iM estimate written down. Hold it against listings for working 2016 iMs at about your mileage. A fix that swallows most of a running hatchback's price rarely pays you back.
- Power train trouble, like slipping, harsh shifts or no drive: see bad transmission.
- Crash damage, the kind that brings structure complaints: see wrecked or totaled.
- Engine won't run right: the blown engine guide helps you weigh it.
How to sell the iM whole
Find the VIN on the windshield corner, read the odometer, and dig out the title. Request an offer here, or phone (877) 421-6008. Where is the iM parked, a carport, the street or a shop, and will it roll in neutral? Our driver plans around that. Sell it complete. If a part already went missing, say so first. Plate and title rules after the sale vary by state; see after you sell. Other Scions: the iA, FR-S, tC and every Scion model.
