Selling a junk or dead car in Easley

A car left on an Easley street gets one day. Section 72.05 makes it unlawful "to park or leave any vehicle upon the public streets of the city for a period of more than 24 hours." After that, police may move it to storage "at the risk and expense of the owner" and, after 60 days, advertise it for the storage charges. If your Easley car is stuck on that path, we buy whole non-running and junk cars, and you sell the whole car as it sits.

The downtown lots

Easley's three city lots, Old Market Square, City Hall and Easley Crossing, have their own rule in Section 72.08:

  • No more than two hours between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, without a city placard or sticker.
  • Placards go to people who live or run a business next to one of those lots.
  • A car left "unattended for a period of more than 24 hours" without a placard "may be towed at the owners expense."

Trailers and vehicles not normally used to carry passengers cannot get a placard at all.

What about the yard?

The Easley code sections we found deal with streets and city lots. A city junk-vehicle rule for private property did not turn up in what we read. State law is the floor, and Easley may add a yard rule on top, so ask City Hall before a broken car spends a season outside.

South Carolina calls a car "derelict" when, among other things, the motor or major parts are gone, or it has passed eight years of age with no current registration. Derelict and abandoned cars alike are subject to removal, from private yards as well as public land, and county or Easley code officers may tag them first. A colored tag on the windshield is that warning.

Two counties, one state title

Most of Easley is in Pickens County, and part is in Anderson County. That matters for the property tax bill your county sends, which the buyer will need to register. The title itself is a state document.

We checked the SCDMV branch on Gentry Memorial Highway in Pickens, number 2133 (864-878-1396). In a straight line, downtown Easley is about 6 miles southeast of it.

Selling it the South Carolina way

  • Assign the title. Easley sellers fill the first assignment with buyer details, lender, miles, price and date, and both parties sign.
  • Report the sale. Form 416 is South Carolina's sold notice.
  • Deal with the plate. It never rides away with the buyer. Reuse it on your next car or surrender it via Form 452 and end the insurance.
  • Replace a missing title. A duplicate is $15, or add $20 for same-day service in person.

The buyer then has 45 days to register. More on the no-title route is in junk car with no title.

Questions people ask

What is the Easley limit for a car parked on a city street?
One day. Section 72.05 lets police move a car left past 24 hours to storage at the owner's risk and expense, and to advertise it for storage charges after 60 days.
Is there an Easley ordinance about junk cars in yards?
The Easley sections we found cover streets and city lots only. State law applies to yards either way, and Easley could have its own yard rule that we missed. Check with City Hall if a dead car will be sitting out for months.
I live on the Anderson County side of Easley. Where do I do title work?
Titles are a state matter, so any SCDMV branch can help. The one we checked is in Pickens, about 6 miles northwest of downtown Easley as the crow flies.
Can an engineless Easley car be scrapped without a title?
Possibly. In South Carolina, an owner can sign an affirming form and sell a car that is twelve or more model years old, has no valid plate, and either lacks an engine or does not run at all, to a demolisher or metals recycler.
