Selling a junk or dead car in Greenwood

Greenwood charges by the day. Under the city's additions to the property maintenance code, Section 8-69, a dead or unlicensed car that is still there after the first notice's deadline adds $10 for each day of the next 30, then $25 a day after that. A repeat within a year starts at $25 or $50 a day. If the car is not worth that, we buy whole non-running and junk cars, and you sell the whole car as it sits.

The rule behind the penalties

Section 8-69 says "inoperative or unlicensed motor vehicles or watercraft shall not be parked, kept or stored on any premises." It also bars any vehicle from being "in a state of major disassembly, disrepair, or in the process of being stripped or dismantled." So a Greenwood project car on blocks, engine out, is covered even with a tag on it. A boat on a trailer in the same shape is covered too.

How the clock runs

The penalty schedule sits in that same section:

  • Fixed in time. "For compliance with a notice to correct violations within the timeframe given in the first notice of violation, no penalty shall be charged."
  • First offense, late. For the next 30 calendar days, a $10 penalty is added "for each day of continuing violation." After those 30 days it is $25 a day until fixed.
  • Second offense in a year. $25 a day "beginning with the first day of the second violation."
  • Third offense in a year. $50 a day from the first day.

In short, the first notice is the free window. A sold car leaving on a flatbed is a corrected violation.

Street parking and the owner's name

Section 30-66 forbids parking on any street "except when such parking is incidental to the use and operation of the vehicle," and calls out storage on the street by "garages, dealers or other persons." Section 30-93 adds that when the driver cannot be found, "the owner or person in whose name such vehicle is registered shall be held prima facie responsible." While the Greenwood title is still yours, so is the ticket.

Title office on West Alexander

We checked the SCDMV branch at 510 W. Alexander Ext. in Greenwood (864-227-6434). Measured straight, it's roughly 2 miles south of downtown Greenwood, a short trip for South Carolina.

A Greenwood seller completes the title's first assignment with who is buying, their address, any lender, the odometer, the price, the date and both signatures. Form 416 then reports the sale. The plate is yours to keep: fit it to another car titled to you, or turn it back in on Form 452 and close out the coverage.

Planning to scrap or strip the car yourself? State law sends the title and plates back to the SCDMV in that case, unless a demolisher or recycler takes the car. A replacement title is $15. See junk car with no title for the affirming-form route on old, engineless cars.

Greenwood is on its own

Greenwood anchors its own micro area, and the other towns on this site are a drive away: Anderson at 35.9 miles, Simpsonville at 37.3, and North Augusta at 47.8. The South Carolina page has the statewide rules.

Getting an offer

Call (877) 421-6008 or use the form. Give us the make, model and model year, about how many miles, if it still runs, and which parts are missing. Pickup can happen from a Greenwood backyard, a carport, or the garage that pulled the engine.

Questions people ask

Is a dead car allowed on a Greenwood lot?
Section 8-69 reads: "inoperative or unlicensed motor vehicles or watercraft shall not be parked, kept or stored on any premises." It also bars any vehicle in major disassembly or being stripped. We saw no cover exception in that text.
What can a Greenwood violation add up to?
Zero if it is fixed within the first notice's timeframe. Past that, $10 per day for 30 days, then $25 per day. A second offense within a year runs $25 per day from day one; a third, $50 per day.
Who answers for a dead car left on a Greenwood street?
When the driver is unknown, Section 30-93 puts it on the registered owner. Section 30-66 forbids street parking that is not part of using the car.
Where is the SCDMV in Greenwood?
We checked 510 W. Alexander Ext. (864-227-6434), roughly 2 miles south of downtown, measured as the crow flies.
