Selling an old or non-running Suzuki Samurai

A third of all Suzuki Samurai complaints to NHTSA are about seat belts: 15 of 45, counted as of October 10, 2026. Eleven of those are on the 1988 alone. Just as telling, 15 of the 45 complaints report someone injured and 15 report a crash.

Recalls and complaints by stretch of years

Beyond one line on Suzuki's own Wikipedia article, this page has no model history to draw on: the SJ410 was built for export "and sold as the Suzuki Samurai in Canada." The EPA files the Samurai under the SJ 410 and Samurai names, in hardtop, soft-top, convertible, two-wheel-drive and pickup versions.

1984-1987: two early recalls

Recall 84V102 covered 1984-1985 models built without the buzzer that reminds a driver to take the key out, a federal theft-protection rule; a steering lock assembly and buzzer were added. Its campaign lists 4,895 vehicles. Recall 85V066, on the 1985, replaced a fuel return hose that was too short and could come off the fuel pump, with the risk of an engine compartment fire (1,662 vehicles). Complaints are few: 1 on the 1985, 5 on the 1986 and 6 on the 1987, one reporting a fire.

1988-1991: the buckle years

The 1988 has 20 complaints, the most of any year, with 6 crashes and 6 injured. Seat belts lead that year with 11 of the 20. Recall 95V103 applies to 1988-1991 Samurais. For the Samurai, the notice says the red front buckle buttons marked "PRESS" may break and shed pieces into the buckle. That campaign's 127,155 vehicles may include other models, so it is not a Samurai-only figure. The 1989, 1990 and 1991 have 2, 2 and 3 complaints.

1992-1995: quiet

The 1992 has 4 complaints, one each naming the wheels, steering and suspension. The 1994 has 2, both naming the seats. The 1993 and 1995 have none on file.

Samurai figures: NHTSA complaint file, October 10, 2026 pull. None of the 45 reports a death. Owners of a later Samurai have had fewer years to report problems with it.

Restore it or sell it?

On a 30-to-40-year-old 4x4, the real question is how much is left to do. If the project has stalled, old project car covers the choice. If it's a non-runner taking up space, junk truck or SUV covers selling it. Either way, check the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup and look closely at both front buckles.

Selling your Samurai whole

Dig out the title and VIN and request an offer online, or phone (877) 421-6008. Say which body it is, whether it runs, and where it sits, even if it's in a back lot. Pickup is free anywhere in the US. Leave the top, wheels and parts on.

Other Suzuki 4x4s: the Sidekick, Grand Vitara and Equator.

Questions people ask

What was the Samurai seat belt recall?
Recall 95V103 covered 1988-1991 Samurais: the red plastic buttons marked PRESS on both front belt buckles could break, dropping pieces inside. The 127,155 vehicles in that campaign also include 1989-1991 Swifts.
Will you take a Samurai that hasn't run in years?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, 4x4s included, with free pickup anywhere in the US.
Does a missing soft top or roof change anything?
A missing top or roof does affect the offer, so tell us what isn't there. Otherwise, sell the whole car as it sits.
