Selling a junk or broken Suzuki Grand Vitara
The first Grand Vitara in EPA data, the 1999, sits under eight recall campaigns. No later model year has more than six. It also drew 158 complaints to NHTSA, just three short of the 2006, the year with the most. Those counts come from 827 complaints and 20 recall campaigns across the 1999-2013 model years, as of October 10, 2026.

Year-by-year complaints and recalls
Owner reports on the Grand Vitara in NHTSA's files through October 10, 2026. The 2009-2013 trucks have fewer years of driving behind them than the early ones, which keeps their numbers down. Any campaign reaching several model years appears in every one of them. Not all of the 20 campaigns are described here.
| Model year | Complaints | Crashes | Injured | Recall campaigns | Most-named component |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1999 | 158 | 19 | 14 | 8 | Engine and engine cooling (24) |

Not one Grand Vitara complaint reports a death. Across all years, air bags lead with 132 complaints, then vehicle speed control (77), engine and engine cooling (64) and the gasoline fuel system (60).
Problems by generation
Wikipedia counts five generations of the Vitara since 1988, and says the second and third were sold as the Grand Vitara. The EPA's 1999-2013 years fall inside those two.
Second generation: 1999-2005 model years
Wikipedia dates this generation's production to 1998-2005, with a 1.6 or 2.0 four-cylinder or a 2.5 V6, through a manual five-speed or an automatic four-speed. Wikipedia ties the Grand Vitara to the Suzuki XL-7, and it came as a two-door convertible and in three- and five-door forms. These years hold 504 of the 827 complaints.
The accelerator cable. On the 2002 (21) and 2003 (12), the leading complaint category is vehicle speed control. Recall 03V512 hit 1999-2004 Grand Vitaras: the cap where the accelerator cable meets the firewall could crack, so dealers put in a new cable. It spans 196,876 vehicles, the XL7 included.
Fuel in the cold. The fuel system leads the 2000 with 24 complaints and is second on the 1999 with 20. Two campaigns, 01V146 (1999-2001) and 04V427 (1999-2004), deal with moisture freezing in the fuel pressure regulator below -25 degrees Celsius. Pressure could then rise at start-up and cause fuel loss. The fixes were a new regulator, a redesigned vacuum union on the first and a new fuel hose and clamp on the second.
Engine and wiring. Engine and engine cooling leads the 1999 (24) and the 2001 (20). On the 2003, recall 03V495 covers an ignition wiring harness routed under the intake manifold, where it could rub against the manifold and the harness could be damaged.
Two oddities. On 1999 two-doors, speakers installed at the port could pinch the rear wiring harness (99V154), and the front seat belt anchor bolts removed for the job may not have been tightened back to spec (99V155). Recall 05V452 replaced front brake discs that could break on SUVs with 16-inch wheels driven hard; its notice says the 801 vehicles were on St. Thomas Island.
Third generation: 2006-2013 model years
Wikipedia dates this generation from 2005 with 1.6, 2.0 and 2.4 four-cylinders, and lists a 5-speed automatic for the V6. A facelift in the second half of 2008 brought two new engines, including a 2.4 four rated at 166 PS (164 hp), usually paired with the 4-speed automatic. For the 2013 model year the V6 was dropped. These years hold 323 complaints, and air bags lead six of the eight.
The front passenger seat. Two campaigns sit under the passenger cushion. Recall 13V405 covers an occupant classification sensor mat that could fail over time; dealers replaced the seat cushion with the mat. It counts 189,901 vehicles, the 2007-2011 SX4 included. Recall 19V187 covers leather passenger seats that could shrink in heat and humidity, filed under the occupant classification sensor, on 2006-2013 Grand Vitaras and 2010-2013 Kizashis.
Belts and pulleys. On the 2006, the tension adjuster pulley for the power steering and air conditioning belt was recalled twice: 10V250, a campaign that also covers the 2005-2006 XL-7, and 18V667, about the pulley's plastic outer portion cracking from heat. Four-cylinder 2009-2011 models got an improved tension adjuster pulley under 11V055.
Gear selection. Recall 07V554 replaced the shift lock module on 2006-2007 automatics whose park lock function fell short of FMVSS No. 114, the theft protection rule. Recall 17V085 covers 791 manual-transmission 2009-2013 models whose gear shift rear shaft could break and stop the gears from changing.
Fix it or sell it?
Start with the number a running Grand Vitara of the same year and mileage brings, then set the repair quote beside it.
- Check recalls on your VIN at NHTSA. An accelerator cable, fuel regulator or seat sensor campaign may never have been done. See selling with an open recall.
- Engine trouble on a 1999-2001? That is where engine complaints are thickest. The blown engine guide explains how to weigh a replacement.
- Manual 2009-2013 stuck in gear? Ask about 17V085 before paying for a gearbox.
- Rust, worn 4x4 parts and a long list? Read selling a junk truck or SUV.
Selling a Grand Vitara whole
- Write down the VIN, mileage, two- or four-door, 2WD or 4WD, and what is wrong.
- Request an offer online or call (877) 421-6008.
- Note where it is and if it moves in neutral. With free pickup anywhere in the US, we bring the truck to the Vitara: a gravel drive, a pasture, a shop's back row.
- Keep the transfer case, wheels and converter on it. If something is gone already, list it.
- When our tow truck shows up for the Grand Vitara, sign the title over and give the driver the keys. For plates and insurance, see after you sell.

Questions people ask
- Which Grand Vitara years have the most NHTSA complaints?
- The 2006 with 161, the 1999 with 158 and the 2000 with 120, by the October 10, 2026 count. The 2009-2013 Grand Vitaras range from 4 to 20 reports each, partly because they've been driven for fewer years.
- What was the Grand Vitara accelerator cable recall?
- Recall 03V512 covers 1999-2004 models. The plastic cap at the spot where the accelerator cable passes through the firewall could crack, so dealers put in a new cable. The 196,876 count includes the XL7 too, so it isn't just Grand Vitaras.
- Do you buy a Grand Vitara with a dead engine or a broken 4x4 system?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, SUVs included, and offer free pickup anywhere in the US. You sell the whole car as it sits.
